Sit/stay
How good is your dog’s self control? Sit and stay try at home and in the garden first. Build up the duration. Then the distance. And today I added in distance and distractions. Of a person and dog walking past. Willow did really well, dogs often move if you go behind them. Willow stayed still! 👏👏👏
Willow did some lovely recall practices today. Always do a few recalls on your walks. You can practice recall when your dog is on a short lead. Recall is calling them away from something else and getting them to come to you. It takes practice and consistency! #recall #dogtraining #recalltraining
Recall practice with Belle
It took a bit of work for me to get Belle to come today. If you have asked for your dog to come to you, you must make sure you follow it through. By start going to them and see if you can get their attention. Don’t keep repeating their name. Instead use another noise: could be with your mouth like kissy noises or some other noise. Or use your hands to clap or pay your legs. Once you get eye contact, it’s easier to encourage them to you. #recalltraining #recall #dogtraining
Belle lead walking practice
At the end of our walk this morning Belle practiced walking next to me to the car. I counted up to 10 and then said ‘yes’ and then rewarded with high value rewards. It is important to use rewards that your dog looovves when training. #dogtrainingadvice #leadwalking #bromleydogtrainer
Belle also practiced lead walking. Counting to ten, then saying ‘yes’ marking to say you have just done the right thing. Then a high value reward.
If new to lead walking start with 5 good steps next to you. With practice get up to 10 and then 15 steps. I find counting out loud can help the dog to keep their focus on you. #leadwalking #dogtrainingadvice
Leave
Practiced leave today. Asking Belle not to interact with a person. Not all people like dogs. The video was as the man was leaving. I had also said ‘leave’ in a normal voice as they approached and as they went past. Leave also means Belle gets a high value reward if she does leave! #dogtraining #bromleydogtrainer
Belle come!!! First video Belle could not pull herself away from a lovely smell. So I went to her. Second video Belle did an amazing recall. She ran and came the quickest route possible! Always praise a recall. If it’s a really good one. Give extra praise and treats! #bromleydogtrainer #recalltraining #dogtraining
Sit/stay
How good is your dog’s impulse control? Can they sit/stay for 10 seconds or a minute. Build it up slowly at home. Then add some distance too. Then try in different environments for different distractions. #dogtraining #bromleydogtrainer
Willow Come! Great recalls from Willow this morning. She came straight away after one calling. This is what we are looking for. I gave Willow some high value treats for coming. #recall #dogtraining
Fun recall.
It’s great to make training fun by hiding behind a tree when Belle and Bella are not looking. They came so quickly and found me! 😊#dogtraining #recall
Wonderful Bella from Bella! She was a long way away!!
Practice recall with short distances to start with. As they get better try longer distances. Practice in places with not many distractions first. We want our dogs to achieve. So we set up the recall so they have the best chance. #dogtraining #recall
How is your dog’s recall?
Recall takes a lot of practice. In fact you can’t practice enough. If you ask for a recall, do follow it through. Like in this video. Bella came and then walked away. So I made noises and walked towards her. Then gave her a reward. Always give a reward for recall. It could be praise, touch, good food or play with a toy. Or all of them. It depends what the dog really likes. #dogtraining #recalltraining #recall
