As the low temperatures continue, gritting trucks have been out up and down the country, spreading tons of rock salt on the roads to melt the ice and snow.

There is a potentially deadly side effect for pets who accidentally consume this rock salt, by licking their fur or their feet after walking near gritted roads.

Poisoning Symptoms:
❄Vomiting
⚠Unusual sleepiness
❄Breathing difficulties
⚠Drinking a lot more water
❄Seizures
⚠Kidney damage

To prevent salt grit poisoning, you can:
❄Thoroughly wipe your dog's feet and fur after a walk
⚠Gently wash the affected areas
❄Dry your dog's fur completely with a towel after washing

Canine diabetes

This is when a dogs pancreas doesn’t produce any, or not enough insulin. This could means their body has an inadequate response to the hormone.

Insulin is needed to absorb glucose into the bloodstream after eating and taking it to cells around their body to enable them to grow.

A dog that is diabetic cannot control the levels of sugar in its blood and, when elevated, this is called hyperglycaemia.
Many dogs can cope with this for a short period of time, however they can often become very unwell if they get another illness, such as a urine infection.

Symptoms of diabetes in dogs:
💉 Increased urination.
💉Excessive thirst.
💉Increased hunger
💉Weight loss.

An insulin type and dose will need to be decided by your vet, this will take time to work out the correct dose. This will require injections twice a day, about 12 hours apart, after a meal. Your vet will show you how to give insulin injections.

It’s really important that you stick to a routine and give injections at the same time each day and feed your pet the correct type and amount of food at each meal as advised by your vet.

🌙🌙As winter quickly approaches and it becomes dark earlier, which means walking your dog in darker hours, both morning and evening.

It can be quite daunting to walk your dog in the dark, and for puppies it could be the first time they experience walking in the dark.

Think about choosing your route carefully, some of your regular walking such as fields and woods may not provide enough light. it’s a good idea during early winter months to start a new, well-lit route so your dog can familiarise themselves with their surroundings.

It’s important to stay visible when out walking during the darker hours. , some hi-vis or reflective clothing for both you and your dog. If your dog isn’t a fan of coats or jackets , reflective leads and collars are a good alternative.

A torch would also be handy to have, so you can look around your path and surroundings while out walking.🌙🌙🌙

It's hard to know how to react or what to do, if your pet has a bad reaction Especially if you're a new pet parent. Fire work season might not have been something you've thought about before. Here are some helpful hints and tips that might help.

Planning ahead can help dogs cope with the fireworks season. You can provide your pet with a safe haven. This should be a quiet area, so choose one of the quietest rooms in your home - a place where they feel in control.
Teach your pet to associate the area with positive experiences, by leaving their favourite toys there. You should use a wide range of different toys to keep them entertained.
After some time your pet should know and feel safe. once the fireworks start, they might take themselves away to that area.

When the fireworks start make sure you only walk your dog during the day, this will avoid your going out with them when fireworks are likely to be set off.

🎆Provide toys and other things that they enjoy.
🎆Make sure your dog isn't left alone.
🎆Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound of fireworks.
🎆Blackout their safe haven, so they can't see any flashes outside.
🎆Put on some music or TV to mask the firework sounds.

Try and ignore the firework noises yourself. Play with a toy to see if your dog wants to join in, but don't force them to play.

Another option is that you can talk to your vet about pheromone diffusers. These disperse calming chemicals into the room and may be a good option for your dog.
