🎆🍂It may seem a little early to be talking about fireworks, especially when we are still clinging to summer. There is plenty we can do NOW to prepare our pets for when the season arrives, however.

You may already know that your pet is frightened of fireworks or perhaps this will be your pet's first experience. 40% of pet owners say their pets fear fireworks, according to the PDSA.

Here are our top tips to start now!

✅ Invest in a pheromone diffuser which can help ease stress and anxiety
✅ Create a safe space/pet den where they feel safe and enjoy retreating to (think blankets, toys, warmth, quiet, secure)
✅ Try desensitisation and counterconditioning. Helpful information is available here: https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/pet-health-hub/other-veterinary-advice/dogs-and-fireworks

It encapsulates everything we hope our pet owners will feel when leaving our practice. When a pet owner takes the time to leave a positive review, we are so grateful! It not only helps us to maintain a service you are happy with but also helps other pet owners to choose a vet they can trust.

If you’d like to leave us a review, you can do so via our website.

Cystitis, just as in humans, is a relatively common condition in cats. It is, however, very uncomfortable and could be a sign of a more serious condition.

Here are the symptoms to look out for:

↪️ Straining to pass urine
↪️ Vocalising pain when urinating
↪️ Urinating more than normal
↪️ Urinating in unusual places
↪️ Over-grooming around the ge****ls and lower abdomen (look out for hair loss)
↪️ Changes in behaviour (becoming more aggressive or quiet)
↪️ Blood is present in the urine (pink liquid or visible red/brown/pink clots)
↪️ Inability to pass urine - please be advised, this is a medical emergency and needs urgent veterinary attention.

If your cat is diagnosed with cystitis, your vet will be able to help identify the cause and how to prevent cystitis from recurring.

Often, without a visible injury, it’s difficult to know that your pet is in pain. After all, many pets, especially cats, are very good at hiding it!

For ‘Animal Pain Awareness Month’, we are highlighting those subtle signs you may notice in your pet which could indicate that they are in pain:

❓Is your pet less active or playing less?
❓Staying on one level, such as a reluctance to move up or down stairs or across surfaces?
❓Showing stiffness or difficulty standing up after laying down?
❓Displaying a decrease in appetite?
❓Are they licking a specific area?

If in doubt, or if you have any concerns, book in with our team.

It’s National Pet Insurance Month! ☮️🧠

Pet insurance covers unexpected events, similar to a car insurance policy. Unlike car insurance, however, 90% of pet insurance claims are for illness as opposed to accident. Data also shows you are more likely to claim on your pet insurance than your car or household insurance.

Pet insurance can help cover the potentially high cost of veterinary treatment if your pet is injured or falls ill. Policies can vary significantly in cost and in terms of what they cover but if there is any concern or uncertainty over how to cover a potentially large unexpected bill or ongoing treatment costs, we would highly recommend insuring your pet.

Costs can vary depending on the treatment but often can run into thousands of pounds. Insurance often allows for the best treatment options available, reassurance and peace of mind.

Did you know…
> 9/10 dogs
> 7/10 cats
…over the age of 3 suffer from periodontal disease?

Over time pets can have a build-up of plaque (a colourless, sticky film of bacteria, saliva and other particles) and tartar (a hard, calcified deposit) on their teeth. This can cause inflammation of the gums (known as ‘gingivitis’) if it’s not removed.

This progressive disease can go on to cause:
⚠️ tooth loss
⚠️ bone damage
⚠️ dental infections
⚠️ pain
⚠️ and, more serious health implications should the bacteria enter the bloodstream.

Most importantly, it is preventable and treatable! Book your pet's FREE dental health check and our team can advise on how best to help!

🐌 Lungworm is a type of parasite that can only be treated through prescription-only medication (POM) and dogs are primarily at risk.

Its larvae reside in snails, slugs, and the faeces of infected dogs and foxes. It can easily infect dogs through something as simple as a snail or slug trail on bowls and toys being left outside! This makes it particularly prevalent during damp summers - seem familiar?

Lungworm can be fatal if left untreated but treatment is included as part of our Pet Health Plan!

Here are the most common symptoms:

🩺 Breathing problems: Coughing or tiring easily

🩺 Blood clotting issues: Nose bleeds, excessive bleeding from minor injuries, bleeding into the eye, anaemia

🩺 Behaviour: Lethargy, depression, seizures, weight loss, poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea.

Our healthcare plan provides monthly protection against lungworm, which is just one of many benefits - protecting your pet, and providing peace of mind for you!

If you’re concerned about lungworm in your dog, or you’d like more information on our healthcare plan, contact us today or visit our website where you can conveniently sign up online!

Sometimes the signs of blindness in pets are not so obvious. It can occur slowly, over time, as a gradual deterioration.

Has your pet?

👀 Started to bump into things?
👀 Do they appear more clumsy?
👀 Have they become more anxious or started to become frightened more easily?
👀 Have they become disorientated when playing out on walks?
👀 Have you noticed they appear confused and the sound of your voice helps?
👀 Have they struggled to find water, toys or food?
👀 Have they started to sleep more than normal?

These behavioural cues are all signs that your pet could be struggling with their eyesight. Physically, you may also notice redness or cloudiness in or around the eye, as well as larger pupils.

If any of these sound familiar, book an appointment with your vet.

It may not feel like we have had much of a summer break this year, but the holidays are drawing to a close. This can mean our children are heading back to school and we are going back to work. For our pets, this change in routine could initiate separation anxiety, having become accustomed to having us around.

If you notice any of these signs, it could be an indication they’re feeling anxious.

To help ease them back into normality, read our top tips below!
💡 Leave a special/ favourite toy to keep them occupied in your absence. Puzzle toys are especially useful as they take concentration and time to gain a reward
💡 Let them have independent time when you are around so they can acclimatise or introduce short periods alone
💡 Create positive associations with you leaving, such as receiving a treat
💡 Ensure they have had exercise so are more inclined to be relaxed and sleep

If you notice any of these signs in your cat, we recommend seeing your vet.

As well as being signs of general poor health, these could be signs of an underlying health condition.

Remember, early intervention means less suffering and often better treatment outcomes.

🐍⚠️ Adders are the UK’s only venomous snake and bites to pets do happen.

It’s worth being aware of what to do if your four-legged friend gets bitten as it can be life-threatening.

If you’re viewing this post on Instagram, remember to save it for later!

Dog walkers, in particular, be mindful:

🦮 Adders are more prevalent between June & August.

🦮 Adders are most often found in long grass, woodland, moorland and by the coast.

Remember, adder bites are URGENT and veterinary treatment is always needed, so contact our team straight away (or a local vet if this happens while on holiday) and head straight to the practice.

…. then you may find these tips helpful to ensure you are applying the treatment correctly for maximum benefits.

💡Part your pet's fur on the back of their neck until the skin is visible
💡Place the pipette on the exposed skin
💡Squeeze to empty the contents onto their neck

⚠️Remember, for full protection, ensure the liquid isn’t rinsed off within the first 48 hours. Try to ensure the liquid is dry before touching the area and if you are treating multiple pets, try to ensure they do not lick the treatment off one another. If you have cats and dogs at home, always avoid permethrin-based products - these are toxic to cats, and can put them at risk even if applied to your dog.

Meet Sophie!

Sophie is our Head Registered Veterinary Nurse. She has worked in the veterinary industry since 2015 and qualified as a nurse in 2019.

Sophie not only has a particular interest in surgical nursing, she also set our clinic up as an RCVS training practice! This means we train students to become qualified nurses and educate the next generation of veterinary professionals.

Alongside this, she has also put in place our RCVS accreditation. As you can tell, Sophie is a credit to our team and we are lucky to have her.

When she's not at work she loves spending time with her soon-to-be husband, 2 daughters, 2 dogs and 2 cats. Another animal lover through and through!

🦷✨ Just like we brush our teeth daily, in an ideal world, we should look after our pets in the same way!

Whilst daily brushing has been shown to be over three times more effective at controlling plaque compared to a daily dental chew or dental diet, we know for most pet owners, this isn't a realistic expectation. But, even if you can't manage every day, once a week will still decrease daily plaque by 10%! When combined with easy, quick, at-home solutions such as water additives, it will be far more effective in keeping that plaque and further issues under control.

Talk to our team today if you'd like to know more about the dental care options available for your pet!

If you would like to lend a helping hand to local wildlife, here are our top tips to help them thrive and not just survive during the warmer spells.

💧Provide water: A shallow dish low to the ground is ideal so that it’s accessible to all animals (and insects!). Ideally, put the dish in an open space to avoid predators (such as cats). You could even consider adding some stones for insects such as butterflies and bees to quench their thirst and climb out, should they fall in. If you have a pond, however, don’t forget about the fish and frogs! Keep it topped up with cool water and ensure there are shaded areas for them to hide.

🏠 Provide shelter: A pile of logs or leaving some overgrowth in a shaded area will not only provide a cool area to rest, but places for insects to hide which becomes a tasty snack for larger wildlife.

🥕 Provide food: If you can, stock those bird feeders, water those berry plants if you have any, and leave out a little dish of meaty pet food for hedgehogs.

⚠️ Be vigilant: Mowing, strimming and bonfires bring additional risks in warm weather. Hedgehogs curl up if they feel threatened and toads lay flat so check where you are gardening first.

It is International Cat Day and the perfect opportunity to celebrate our feline friends 🐱🐱

They bring us so much joy and being a cat owner provides so many benefits to our health. They improve our mental health, lower stress, reduce loneliness and even boost self-esteem - as if we needed more reasons to welcome a cat into our family!

👂 As pet owners, we often joke that our pets are ‘hard of hearing’ or ‘ignoring us’, especially when it’s bath time or time to go home. The question is, does our dog have selective hearing or are they actually hard of hearing?

A change in obedience is a key sign that your dog is having some hearing difficulties. Maybe they have stopped responding to their name, or you’ve noticed a dip in their energy levels, a tilt or shake of the head, or barking more than usual.

⚠️ If you think your dog may be struggling to hear, make an appointment with your vet. This is especially true if your pet is older.

There is plenty that can be done to support you and your pet, as well as to rule out other potential causes.

Cats love to bask in the sunshine but we often forget, as they don’t exercise in the same way dogs do, that they too are susceptible to heatstroke.

To prevent heatstroke in cats, here are our top tips!
☀️Ensure they have a constant supply of water
☀️Check outside areas such as garages, sheds, and greenhouses, where cats can become trapped and easily overheat
☀️Ventilate any spaces they are confined to e.g. a room at home
☀️Never leave pets in cars and avoid unnecessary travel. If transporting your cat e.g. to the vet, ensure there is a breeze and ideally air conditioning
☀️Provide areas of shade in your garden for outdoor cats.

If you are concerned that your cat may be suffering from heatstroke, call your vet immediately for advice and treatment.
