Rabbit owners! There is a highly virulent strain of RVHD, which has recently been identified.

Stocks of the Yurvac vaccine have been made available to veterinary surgeons in the UK, and we are encouraging all rabbit owners to protect their bunnies from this deadly disease.

As many rabbit owners will know, there are two deadly infectious diseases affecting the rabbit population.

These are…

🐰 Myxomatosis
🐰 Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (RVHD 1 & 2)

Thankfully, due to vaccinations, we can protect our rabbits. However, much like humans can be affected by different variants of COVID, the RVHD is adept at creating new variants, too. Your rabbit's usual vaccination programme has covered all these mutations of the disease, until now!

The Yurvac vaccine contains both new strains and previous strains combined. It is a multidose vial which is administered in one vaccination. We will soon be announcing our second rabbit vaccination clinic and would encourage all rabbit owners to vaccinate their pets.

Paracetamol is a common painkiller for humans. It is surprisingly easy for a cat to get access to paracetamol.

It is sometimes given to cats by cat owners in an attempt to treat an illness, who are unaware of how dangerous it is, or it is accidentally ingested.

Cats cannot break down paracetamol in the same way humans do, resulting in serious damage to their liver and red blood cells. Even 1 single tablet can cause severe toxicity or even death, with symptoms appearing within hours.

The most common sign is discolouration of the gums to a brown colour. Other signs may include:

> Weakness
> Lethargy
> Increased heart rate
> Rapid or difficult breathing
> Depression
> Vomiting
> Anorexia
> Vocalisation

If you are concerned your pet has ingested even a small amount of paracetamol, contact us/your vet immediately.

Breeds with flat faces (brachycephalic) – such as Bulldogs, French bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Boxers, Pugs (not an exhaustive list!) – are at particular risk of developing heatstroke.

After years of selective breeding to achieve this ‘flat-face’ look, these dogs now have altered anatomy, rendering them with a brachycephalic skull, i.e. a shortened head, flat face and short nose. This means they:

> Are unable to pant effectively, which is a dog's primary mechanism for regulating body temperature

> Suffer from restricted airflow, reducing oxygen, meaning they have to work even harder to breathe

As a result, these breeds are far less tolerant of the heat and are far more susceptible to overheating, which can be fatal.

During the warmer weather:

☀️ Limit their exercise
☀️ Always ensure they have access to shade
☀️ Carry water with you
☀️ Offer cooling aids in extreme heat
☀️ Monitor for signs of overheating

Diabetes is a commonly known but serious condition. Have you ever wondered what is happening in the body of a diabetic pet?

When the body has an insufficient production of insulin (a hormone which controls blood glucose), it can build up in the body and potentially be fatal!

If your pet is diagnosed with diabetes, we are here to support you in managing your pet's condition at home so they can live as normal a life as possible - just like humans!

Diabetes can be diagnosed from a simple blood test, and in honour of Diabetes Awareness Week, we would like all pet owners to know the key signs!

🔺 Increased thirst
🔺 Increased hunger
🔺 Urinating more
🔺 Weight loss
🔺 Lethargy
🔺 Sight problems
🔺 Poor coat condition

If you have any concerns that your pet may be showing these signs, get in touch with our team today.

Every year, dogs continue to die in hot cars. Pet owners sadly underestimate the effect the heat can have on pets.

Not only can they not regulate their body temperature in the same way we can, but they are also wearing thick coats.

Leaving a dog in a car for even a short amount of time can be fatal!
If you see a dog in a car on a warm day, please call 999 immediately.

The vast majority of pet owners are aware that xylitol is highly toxic to pets. Unfortunately, it is getting progressively more difficult to protect them.

Xylitol is found in a wide variety of products that we use as humans, from chewing gum to toothpaste and supplements. It is also included in many products we often share with our pets, such as ice cream and peanut butter.

Always check the ingredient list, and if in doubt, only use pet-specific products. It can trigger a rapid drop in blood sugar, causing liver damage, which can be life-threatening.

Two more OCC cap presentations for our juniors playing senior cricket, with Gabe and Ed making their 2nd team debuts. It was a tough day for the 2s, but there will be lots of good days to come for these two!

Well done to 💪
