❤ Pippa's Story ❤

Carrying on with the feel-good vibes, and with the festive season heading our way, we wanted to share the story of Pippa.

This little one was brought to Park Issa as a stray found in Robert Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital car-park. Cold, hungry and full of snot, this little one made her presence known with her louder than a steam engine purr, huge personality and lust for life.

Nurse Freyer took one look and said "yep, that's the one!"

And so off Pippa went to join the motley crew of Freyer's home. After a course of antibiotics, strict worming, a good diet and some vaccinations, Pippa was back to full health!

She now spends her days lounging in bags for life, checking inventory in the fridge or snuggled with one of her big sisters!

She's even got a new best friend in Tortellini the tortoise - next time you see Freyer, ask her for a video! It's sure to make you laugh!

It is so important that we look to spay and neuter all our cats to aid with the population of strays. Fortunately to Pippa, she was found by a kind member of the public and her story has a happy ending, but sadly this isn't the case for all kitties.

To find out more about neutering or feline advice, speak to our nurses or head over to icatcare.com.

🎉We would like to wish Henry a very happy belated birthday! 🎉

He came to see nurse Nikki for his Librela injection recently and was an absolute gent about it. ❤

If you guess correctly how old Henry was this birthday - you owe your pet a treat 👀

PET OF THE MONTH - ❤ TESS ❤

Vet Rachel returned from work one day to find the family's 7 year old cocker spaniel Tess very quiet but responsive, unwilling to stand, with pale gums, fast heart rate and a high temperature.

Rachel rushed her into Park Issa where we discovered Tess had a red blood cell count (PCV) of only 12%!

This meant that poor Tess’s body was potentially suffering from a disease called Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA) - a nasty disease where the body attacks its own red blood cells.

An in-house test was run by Park Issa’s nurses which confirmed this diagnosis.
Tess was immediately started on a cocktail of medications which suppressed her immune system to stop it from attacking those all important red blood cells. She was also started on anti-clotting medications as IMHA can often cause clots.

However, these medications often take a while to take effect and by morning Tess’s PCV had dropped to a very concerning 6%.

At this point, in stepped Ruby, Rachel’s German wirehaired pointer as a blood donor.

Tess received 300ml of fresh blood as a blood transfusion from her sister Ruby - who was an absolute super star throughout the procedure!

Some IMHA cases may require multiple blood transfusions but thankfully for Tess only one was required in order to keep her RBC count high enough before the medication had time to take effect.

Over the next few nail-biting days, Tess had repeated blood tests to see how her PCV was improving.Over the first couple of days, she developed yellow gums (jaundice) due to the increasingly high bilirubin levels - a by-product of the body breaking down the red blood cells.

Thankfully, it looked that Tess’s body knew what it needed to do and started to regenerate red blood cells - indicating that her bone marrow was starting to do its job.

With lots of fluids and supportive management from our wonderful nurses Tess started to make a good recovery and was able to go home.

However she did suffer a minor clot to the brain 5 days in despite her anticlotting medication which has left her a little uncoordinated.

Thankfully Tess looks to be making a great recovery, her RBC is back to normal (and her gums back to pink!) and her immunosuppressive drugs have started to be gradually reduced.

We are so proud of Tess for being an incredible patient, and Ruby for being a super-star blood donor!

Did you know that dogs can give blood? There is even a dedicated Pet Blood Bank that we can call upon.

Does anyone remember Maji the LaPerm who visited us last year?
Well, Maji has a new baby sister! 😍

Pretty little Zen came in to visit Lucy the vet last week for a check over, and her owner reports that her and Maji are absolutely besotted with each other!

Instinctively cats can be solitary creatures, but certain breeds can be considerably more sociable with each other, and these two LaPerms have ticked that box for sure ☑️

Is anyone else owned by cats who are the best of friends? 🐱
Or does anyone need advice on bringing a new kitten into the home?

The Pet Health Club website has heaps of advice articles for new owners on https://www.pethealthclub.com/uk/pet-advice/cats-kitten-advice
But as always, feel free to give us a call if you want to know anything specific that either our vets or nurses might be able to help with!
