Earlier in the year we were filmed along with Kara Mara as part of a series of films to promote working in forestry in Wales. Doing it for the Timber Jills !
one horse open sleigh
Dashing through the snow on a one horse open sleigh! Oh Facebook when I don't post for a while you stop all my followers from seeing me! Hopefully this is an exciting enough video to find people again! Perfect day for dashing through the snow on a one horse open sleigh! Well actually it was moving some fire sheets and blocks and bits and pieces from a site we have been doing some bracken raking and scrub clearance for the butterflies. But it couldn't have been a better day for it! Thanks Hele for help and film. I decided not to go with the one where I burst into the Christmas song π€£
We often get filmed and photographed by members of the public. Mostly I don't mind and am glad to showcase the horses. There were a few times this summer when I was being baked alive and falling down a rabbit hole when I didn't take too kindly to a camera being on me. Often no one sends me the photos either so I have no idea whether we are being shown off to our best or where our photos end up! Anyway we met Sue recently and she very kindly sent me a couple of videos of Molly and Bluebell working. So thankyou Sue for taking the time to send it through. Looks quite idyllic !!
Beach splosh
Glad the rain cleared so we got to do our annual pit stop, plod and splosh on the beach π still blooming windy!
Here is Molly making the first cut in some deep bracken. She is so bold as it's right up to her head. We are trying to make a parallel line to our last section to make nice bite sized and efficient areas to rolls. To minimise the turning for the horse and also it's quite cool to make the hill into a neat mint humbug if we can! Hopefully the helicopter pilots will be impressed! It's hard to see the line when you are in deep bracken. Very geeky excitement from me when we pop out exactly where we wanted to to join to our next bit! I think we should try and make a bracken maze next!
We have been lucky to finish work near a stream recently, ponies enjoying the cool. Plus more Molly love, oh yeah Bluebell is alright too! βΊοΈ
Back in the woods this week. Trees were felled in winter so it's just extracting. Forty plus times up and down this hill each day has kept us fit. It's steeper than it looks. Horses have been absolutely brilliant.
Finally some harrowing from yesterday!ππ I like this angle of filming, makes my horses look massive π€£
April is normally the three C's, chain harrowing, charcoal and calving. It is fair to say it has been quite a frustrating month for two of these activities that are very weather dependent. Horses can often get on with chain harrowing when you wouldn't put a machine on a field due to the gentle traction of their hooves, but it has just been so extreme we have barely been able to get on with any of it. Normally we are dashing to get it done before everything goes rock hard and we are in the middle of a drought. It's just not felt worth it to bother with charcoal making either and not a lot of fun in a windy blizzard, which is what most of the weather is at the moment! But we have had our first calf, successfully and healthy and are back into milking again. We also have to keep the horses (and me!) fit so when we can work we are ready and so we are still busy as thankfully (!?) we have our own very steep bit of woodland with timber still needing extraction. It's a real drop off over the side and here when the horses start to pull, the log actually goes up in the air and flips over, like true professionals they keep going undeterred, the log then gets stuck but again they just dig in and pull and off we go. It's pretty steep but it's good to keep fit and we will be making charcoal and logs again in no time ππ€
Do you fancy learning to do this and more? We still have places on our one day introduction to working with horses courses. No prior experience needed. Suitable for anyone with just a general interest looking for a fun day out or someone thinking that it might be a possible future line of work or something they want to do with their own horse. More details on the flier in the comments or pinned post. We still have places on 18th May and one place on 8th June. Groups are small and it's a really hands on practical day. Any questions please get in touch.
Coming down the same extraction route that looked like a river a couple of weeks previously! Thanks to Tina and Rob for sharing the video. Coedwigoedd Glaw Celtaidd Cymru - Celtic Rainforests Wales Woodland Trust Cymru Baileys and Partners Keziah Rose Forestry and Tree Work
It's fair to say this winter has been more about enduring than joy, but today was full of joy. Horses working well, sun shining, birds singing. A hard day's work but I still feel like I have loads of energy! As we have not got to waste time washing mud off everything and drying all our clothes and crying into our dinner, we are treating ourselves to an ice-cream on the beach π
