Mushrooms are more likely to grow as the cooler, damp autumnal weather arrives 🍄 Would you know what signs to watch out for, and what to do, if your pet has foraged and eaten some mushrooms in your garden or whilst out on a walk?

The Animal Poison Line have provided some useful information. Please contact us, or your local veterinary surgery, immediately if you believe your pet may have ingested mushrooms.

We are receiving a lot of calls involving ingestion of mushrooms at the moment.

Fortunately most mushrooms are of low toxicity but some can cause gastrointestinal upset, neurological signs and liver disease if ingested.

Top tips if you think your pet has ingested a mushroom:
☎️ Seek prompt advice
📷 Take several pictures of the mushrooms where they are growing
🍄 If there are other similar mushrooms nearby, pick one close to the base, wrap it in kitchen paper and take it with you to the vet
🔎We work with expert mycologists to provide accurate identification of mushrooms to enable targeted treatment. It is not safe to rely on pictures/apps for identification purposes

Look who came to see us yesterday for her second set of puppy vaccinations 🩷 Well done River for being so brave for your injection (she didn't notice a thing, thanks to some tasty treats!).

Did you know, Rottweilers are descendants from ancient Roman dogs and were traditionally used as 'drovers' to protect and herd cattle and other livestock!

🐾 Feel free to contact our friendly veterinary team on 01832 273521 if you would like any advice on vaccinations, microchipping, parasite treatments, neutering and/or nutritional guidance for your pets🐾

As Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) continues, here we have Emma Davidson, one of our amazing Veterinary Care Assistants (VCA) at Oundle Veterinary Surgery.

Emma has previously worked as a veterinary receptionist at another clinic, before joining us as a VCA last summer. Emma's favourite part of the job is spending time with the patients and helping them to feel more relaxed and comfortable whilst visiting/staying with us. Emma has a keen interest in animal behaviour and desensitisation work, and loves looking after our in-patients and says 'I always want our patients to feel relaxed and help turn their experience at the vets into a positive one!'

Emma has a gorgeous cat called George (seen pictured here), who has owned Emma for 13 years, and has meticulously trained his human to be the filler of empty bowls and opener of doors with very simple verbal commands 😹

As part of Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) we will be introducing each of the nursing team throughout the month of May. Keep an eye on our page to find out more about us!

For the whole month of May it is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM).

Here we have Charlotte, one of our lovely Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN) at Oundle Veterinary Surgery, seen here with Lola giving her some TLC following surgery.

You may recognise Charlotte from our Thrapston branch, where she first started working with us back in 2019 as a receptionist, before completing her Student Veterinary Nurse (SVN) course and qualifying as an RVN last year.

Charlotte has since moved over to our Oundle branch and really enjoys surgical/theatre nursing, in-patient care and dealing with emergencies. Charlotte also enjoys carrying out lab tests - did you know RVNs can help with taking and running blood samples, testing urine/faecal samples and preparing/analysing microscopic slides, under the direction of a vet? Charlotte loves all animals and owns two sausage dogs, called Wilson and Bella.

As part of VNAM we will be introducing each of the nursing team throughout the month of May. Keep an eye on our page to find out more about us!

🩺 For the whole month of May it is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) 🩺

Gemma is one of our amazing Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN) and qualified back in 2010. During this time Gemma has worked in a number of different veterinary practices, from general practice, referral nursing to emergency nursing, and a busy veterinary hospital. Gemma has completed a certificate in emergency critical care (ECC) and small animal nutrition. Gemma has a passion for nursing and enjoys many aspects, but one of Gemma's favourite places to be is in the consult room! Gemma loves the variety that being an RVN brings and says 'no two days are ever the same - I love the bonds that are made within a veterinary practice, because we deal with such a range of emotions, it bonds and brings the teams together!'

Gemma has a lovable, bouncy springador called Murphy and a cheeky cat (with plenty of cattitude!) called Guinness 🐾 seen pictured here.

As part of VNAM we will be introducing each of the nursing team throughout the month of May. Keep an eye on our page to find out more about us!

Another day, another Emma!

Here we have Emma one of our amazing Veterinary Care Assistants (VCA) at Oundle Veterinary Surgery.

Emma first joined us as a receptionist over 9 years ago, before moving over to the nursing team, as a VCA, in September 2022. Emma enjoys being more clinical and helps to look after our patients whilst they are visiting the clinic and whilst hospitalised with us. Emma loves being more hands on with the patients and being part of our fantastic nursing team and watching the amazing work our vets do close-up!

Emma enjoys nothing more than taking her gorgeous two boys for lovely, long dog walks and riding her horse Moo, who she has owned for the past 12 years!

As part of Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) we will be introducing each of the nursing team throughout the month of May. Keep an eye on our page to find out more about us!

Please note from 10 June 2024 it will be mandatory for cats (over 20 weeks old) to be microchipped and registered on a compliant database. Please contact us today if you would like to book a microchipping appointment for your cat 🐈🐈‍⬛

A reminder for all cat owners! 🐱

From 10 June 2024 cats over 20 weeks old must be and registered on a compliant database 📆

By microchipping their cats, owners can increase the likelihood that they will be reunited with their beloved pet in the event that they go missing.

For the whole month of May it is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM).

Here we have Emma who qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) last year. Emma loves her nurse consults, particularly helping owners with nutritional advice and running weight management clinics. Emma is one of our ISFM Cat Advocates for the clinic and ensures we use up-to-date knowledge and cat-friendly methods to maintain our Silver Cat Clinic status! Emma loves nothing more than discussing your cats needs; from their quirky behaviours to helping to reduce stress and anxiety at home, or whilst travelling, and has lots of tips and tricks to help get them eating, drinking, playing and bonding better with their owners. Emma also loves other species (not just cats!) and enjoys nursing dogs, rabbits and ferrets, and recently returned from a dog sledding expedition in Norway!

Lucy has been a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) for the past 10 years and during this time has worked in a busy, mixed veterinary practice before joining the team at Oundle to work with small animals only. Let's talk ferrets!

Charlie came to see us for a procedure at Thrapston Veterinary Surgery last week and can be seen pictured here recovering with Emma, one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses. Did you know ferrets are 'obligate carnivores' and must eat meat?

Other fun ferret facts - newborn ferrets are so small they can fit inside a teaspoon! Ferrets are also highly intelligent and can be trained to use litter trays, sit on command, shake hands and walk on a lead. They have also been used to 'work' by running wire in those hard to reach places!

Have you got any other fun ferret facts to share?

We are pleased to report that Charlie is recovering well from his procedure and is back to his usual cheeky self! ☺️

21/12/2023

This time of year, it's important to make sure our furry friends don't get hold of our Christmas goodies, as lots of food eaten this time of year can be toxic. If you think your pet has ingested anything toxic or dangerous please contact us on 01832 273521 immediately.

🦴 Bones can cause danger in various ways. Pets may choke on bones, or they can cause gastrointestinal blockages or tears. Cooked bones can splinter more easily and cause GI damage. They can also damage their teeth when chewing them.

🍫 Chocolate contains theobromine which is a stimulant for cats and dogs that their bodies can't break it down like we can. It can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness and seizures.

🧄🧅 Garlic and onions belong to the same family (Alliums) and are poisonous to pets and can damage the red blood cells causing anaemia. They can be dangerous even in gravy or stuffing.

🌰 Macadamia nuts can cause weakness, tremors, vomiting and hyperthermia within 12 hours of ingestion by dogs. It is also best to avoid in cats.

🍇 Grapes, raisins, sultanas and currants are toxic to pets, even if only one is eaten. Again these are dangerous even when used as ingredient in something else such as fruit cake.
