A speeding driver who mowed down and killed a mum and her eight-month-old baby boy as the youngster's father watched on in horror has been jailed by a crown court judge.
Tyson Haynes, 53, crashed into Nicole Newman as she pushed eight-month-old Luciano Bianco-Newman in his buggy in Anerley, south East London in January 2019.
Nicole’s partner Charlie Bianco-Ashley had already crossed the road and could only look on as the 23-year-old hit the Ford Fiesta's windscreen and his son’s buggy was thrown into the air.
Haynes’ own eight-year-old daughter was in the car at the time, a court heard, as he was taking her home from McDonalds.
Nicole died at the scene in Anerley, so, and little Luciano died in hospital a week later.
Haynes, of Brockley, accepted two counts of causing death by careless driving at an earlier hearing.
Jailing Haynes for 33 months, Judge Richard Marks QC, the Common Serjeant of London, said: “The word ‘tragic’ is much overused but if ever a case could properly be so described, this is such a case.
“I’m aware no sentence that I can impose in this case can bring Nicole and the little boy back, and nor will any sentence seem remotely adequate to the family.
“The family are unsurprisingly utterly devastated
The undisputed evidence is that had you been driving within the speed limit, this collision would have been avoided.”
Isleworth Crown Court heard Haynes was “persistently speeding” in the area for around ten minutes before the crash and had been travelling at 67mph on the 30mph road just seconds before the crash.
