Its Tick time of year!
Ticks are small, spider-like parasites that suck blood! They have eight legs and an egg-shaped body that fills with the blood they suck.
They hang out in woods and grassland throughout the year, so these are the areas where they can get onto you and your pet. Although they can’t jump, they still manage to get onto people and cling to dogs coats by climbing, dropping, or through direct contact. Its important to look out for ticks on your pet after walks during the warmer months.
If your dog has been bitten, you’ll usually see the tick on their skin as a lump - regular grooming can be a good way of checking for ticks, and is also a nice way to bond with your dog.
You won’t be able to stop your dogs picking up parasites, but regular checks of your dog after every walk and speaking to your vet about parasite control can help.

Did you know that the sun can be harmful to our pet's skin just like our own, if they are exposed to too much solar radiation? This is especially true if they have light hair colour - or on areas that are not well covered like ears or noses, or even bald patches. Sun damage can increase the risk of a type of skin cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Early signs might not be easy to spot, and can look like a small wound or even a scratch, so keep an eye on areas of skin that are not healing - or changing in appearance.
Where possible allow your pets somewhere shady to rest, and keep out of the sun. If you are at all worried about any skin patches, you can pop up to Hilltop and get your pet checked out.

03/06/2024

With summer arriving, and the weather warming up, Flystrike becomes a concern in our pet rabbits. It is a painful, life-threatening condition caused by maggots burrowing under the skin, and causing severe damage. Rabbits are particularly at risk of flystrike if they have a dirty bottom or open wounds, so keeping your rabbit clean and healthy is essential. If you see any patches of wet fur, sense a strong unpleasant odour, or even notice the presence of maggots you need to act very quickly to give your bunny a good chance of recovery.
Fortunately, it’s easy to prevent flystrike with a few simple measures. Checking your rabbit daily, and keeping them in a clean environment is one of the main ways to prevent the condition, treating the back end with preventative topical medication (Rearguard) and grooming long haired types, all act as preventative measures.
Being mindful of general rabbit health, such as their teeth, diet and weight are also important factors.
If you are worried about your rabbit, or would just like them to have a general health check, the team at Hilltop can help. Our special rabbit health plans cover the cost of Rearguard treatment, and two health checks a year (as well as vaccinations and other benefits) so are a great way to keep your rabbits healthy all year round.

The Tick season is here again! Ticks are spider-like small parasites that suck blood from our pets, they have eight legs, with an egg-shaped body that will become larger and darker when filled with blood. They climb or drop on your pet's coat when they brush past, rather than jumping, like fleas. Ticks are common in woodland and grassland, particularly during the warmer months. Cats are less likely to get ticks than dogs, but it can still happen, so its is always worth being vigilant when your cat comes for a fuss. As ticks can carry diseases, it is worth removing them promptly, and having a special tool to ensure you remove them properly is essential, a vet or nurse can advise in this area and provide the tool. If you are at all worried about ticks, do not hesitate to contact us here at Hilltop vets and we can help you both remove ticks, and prevent them returning. Call on 01865 736060 or
