With children spending more time at home with their four-legged friends during half term, it's important to be able to recognise the signs of stress in dogs 🚦

Kendal Shepherd's Canine Ladder of Communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder ⚠️

The quicker you notice the early signs of stress, the sooner you'll be able to remove your dog from the situation that is causing them stress and avoid them reaching the top of the ladder.

It’s important to note that context is KEY! Think about the situation that your dog is in to try and understand the signs. For example, if they're at home and relaxed as normal, an exposed belly is very different to a stiffened exposed belly in an unfamiliar environment. All dogs are different - not every dog will show every action on the ladder and they might not follow the same order.

Does this look comfortable for your dog to wear?

No. Because it isn't. Designed, engineered and intended to cause pain, discomfort, or annoyance. Even when fitted "properly."

There is no way to use it without it causing pain, discomfort, or annoyance and all the emotions which go with that.

"Oh, it just communicates to the dog, it's a communication too..."

Yes, it communicates that if you don't do what I want, I will hurt you until you do.

Sorry guys I’m cancelling the Dog Lover Community Walk today, it’s miserable outside and I’m down a pair of hands due to illness. We’re still open 10am-2pm today so of course please do or don’t do your own walk and come and have a pawpachinno and the best coffee and cake around! 🐶🌧️☕️🧁🦴🫖🤍

💕 A massive thank you to all our new and old clients this year for choosing us to make your pooches look fantastic. We have welcomed lots of new furry faces this year and sadly lost some amazing old furry friends over the rainbow bridge 🌈 thank you to everyone who has had appointments rearranged and been so flexible in helping us run things smoothly. Early in Feb 2025 we have ONE slot to be able to bring a dog back to the UK & we have a perfect dog to fill this slot but sadly we do not have a perfect home for her! Vicky has been at the shelter most of her life, she is now 7 and it is time she came to the UK to a family of her own.

Vicky is a little rotund at around 19kg but is only about 40cm high at the shoulder, we think she might be a Jack Russell Terrier mix. She is great with other dogs, amazing with every person she meets, she has met kids with no issues & loves being the centre of attention.

When Louise goes to Iraq Vicky sleeps on Louise’s bed in the office at night, she is clean in the office & lets us know if she needs to go out, she is always very sad when Louise leaves & she has to be back in her section at night. She loves playing with her toys, she is a genuinely lovely dog.

We are seeking a home without small furries or cats but she can live with other dogs or as an only dog. We are looking for a home where her family will take her on lovely walks each day and help her to lose a few kg, a home where she will be one of the family. Vicky is fine to be left home alone for up to 4 hours but we feel any longer than that would not be fair on her as she is such a sociable little girl. We are happy to let her live in a home with respectful, dog savvy children age 8 +
