Downs-side Riding Centre has been a family run business for over ten years. With a fully lit indoor ménage we are able to teach lessons during the day and into the evening. We are fortunate to have a full set of plastic coloured jumps and also a variety of cross country style ones to suit everyone’s needs. We are located close to a lovely country park with lakes, perfect for h

acking around with the horses. You are welcome to view the yard and horses at any time, or just give us a call for more information; there will always be somebody happy to greet you!

Lego actually keeping a jump up for once! When Lego came to us he would literally run through jumps like they were there. Now he does but some effort in to jumping but often knocks them down. This week he has been smashing hi jumping, getting his strides right, picking up his back feet and keeping the jumps up! What a horse!!

Owning horses is a life long commitment and whilst it is amazing there are a few things to really consider. Here’s a few things we would recommend you think about when buying a horse which you wouldn’t normally think about:

1. They need looking after 365 days of the year no matter what!
2. Consider additional costs which you might not initially think about. Things such as hay, bedding, feeds, worming, yard equipment and other things.
3. Clothing and boots for you. You’d be surprised how quickly you go through wellies, boots and clothes when wearing them every day!

Official Notice

With a heavy a heart we must inform all our amazing and loyal customers that the riding school is unfortunately Closing down, this is due to personal circumstances that we cannot overlook. We appreciate that it’s not only sad for our staff but for all our riders too. Please be kind in your messages as it’s an end to a beautiful era of Downs-Side Riding Centre that has been in the Wheeler family for over two decades.

Our official last day that the riding school will be open is the 31st of March 2025. All lessons will carry on as normal up until this date. Unfortunately, we cannot take any more block bookings, but all riders can pay for each individual lesson going forward up until the 31st of March 2025. We will be finding the right homes for all our fantastic horses to enjoy the rest of their lives, and we are grateful for everything they have given us over the years.

We thank each and everyone of you that has come through our doors over the years and we hope you can stay with us until the very end.

After yesterday’s sad news we thought we would cheer you all up with an update on one of our old horses. Pye here was one of our riding school horses that was bought by his loaner. Here he is living his best life on his yard where he plays with his friends and continues to be a handful! 😂 Thanks to Soph his owner for the photo, it’s great to see him doing so well.

Very sad news for all of us here at the yard. Yesterday Arnie was hit by a delivery van and today we have made the difficult decision to put him to sleep as his injuries are not fixable.
-
We are gutted! Arnie was such a character and had become a fixture on the yard. Him and Larry were always together at the school gate trying to get fuss from people watching the lessons. And even though they fought all the time, the two of them were pretty much inseparable.
RIP Arnie, you’ll be missed.💚
