Cold weather tips ❄️

Cold weather can be challenging for calves and impact their overall health. Here are a few tips to help ⬇️

πŸ”Έ Dry newborn calves to reduce heat loss
πŸ”Έ Ensure bedding is clean, dry and deep (hindlimbs shouldn't be visible when nesting)
πŸ”Έ Avoid draughts at calf level

Today, on International Men’s Day, we wanted to shine a light on the incredible men within our team who work hard to care for animals and their owners 🌟

This day is not only about highlighting the contributions they make, but also about putting a spotlight on the importance of men’s well-being.

Vetlife is dedicated to supporting our industry and emphasising the importance of well-being, and we would like to share this great guide they've put together πŸ‘‰ https://bit.ly/3Odu0qF

Haemonchus contortus (the barber's pole worm) warning πŸ’ˆπŸ‘

Haemonchus contortus (the barber's pole worm) πŸ’ˆπŸ‘

Haemonchus is an abomasal blood sucking worm that can cause sheep to lose up to 250ml blood daily🩸

Historically, it was only seen in the South East, but we are now seeing more cases in Cumbria.

The first signs that there might be a problem in your flock is an unexpected high faecal egg count in either your ewes or lambs.

Clinical signs may include:
🐏 Anaemia
🐏 Submandibular oedema (bottle jaw)
🐏 Loss of body condition

Diarrhoea is not a classic symptom of this worm burden! πŸ’©βŒ

Please speak to your vet if you have any concerns πŸ“ž

Just one single bite from an infected midge can reliably transmit BTV-3 ⚠️

It is important you are aware of how it is transmitted, caution against misinformation and use proven tactics.

Maximise natural ventilation and use naturally windy pastures and higher ground that is exposed to your advantage.

Bluetongue is notifiable and suspected cases must be reported.

How is BTV-3 spread? πŸ‘€

Bluetongue is mainly spread by adult-infected midges biting livestock. All it takes is one bite.

Although less common, it can also be spread through the movement of infected animals.

Being aware of how it is transmitted, and also the signs, is important.

Bluetongue is notifiable and suspected cases must be reported. For more information or advice, click here πŸ‘‰ https://ruminanthw.org.uk/bluetongue-virus/

What tactics can you use to help prevent the spread of BTV-3?

A single infected midge can transmit bluetongue, and whilst you can't completely protect your livestock from midges, there are tactics you can use to your advantage:

πŸ”Ή Maximise natural ventilation
πŸ”Ή Use naturally windy pastures and exposed higher ground to your advantage
πŸ”Ή Think before you move animals, ensure good biosecurity and check restriction zone guidance

Bluetongue is notifiable and suspected cases must be reported. For more information or advice, click here πŸ‘‰ https://ruminanthw.org.uk/bluetongue-virus/
