We found these lively creatures through our microscope yesterday. They are feathers mites from a horse (chorioptes equi) and were seen on a brushing taken from a pony’s pasterns. The mites can cause quite severe itchiness, usually seen as foot stamping or chewing at the feathers. 🪳🪳
When it comes to your pet’s teeth, prevention is better than cure! This video shows Winnie the border terrier having her evening tooth brush.
Ideally you should brush your dog’s teeth once a day after their meal. You must use a toothpaste designed specifically for dogs and a soft children’s toothbrush.
Plaque tends to build up most heavily on the canine (fang-type) teeth and large back teeth so it is important to lift their lip right to the back of their mouth so you don’t miss any. Soft circular motions with the brush avoid damage to the gums.
You may think your dog wouldn’t tolerate this, but a stepwise approach to introducing brushing can make it possible in most friendly dogs:
1. Let them lick the toothpaste off your finger for the first few evenings
2. Then let them lick it off the brush
3. Next try pushing your finger between their cheek and their teeth each side
4. Eventually use the brush between cheek and teeth
5. Then introduce the circular brushing movements.
We offer nurse dental appointments to coach you through how to start brushing. Some dogs with severe plaque build up may require a scale and polish under anaesthetic to make a fresh start before brushing, but getting your pet used to the routine prior to this is always time well spent!

Collecting a faecal sample for your horse’s worm egg counts may seem a simple task, but there are some key steps to be aware of to make the results as accurate as possible:
1. Always collect from a fresh pile of dung
2. Select a pinch of faeces from THREE different sites in the dung pile, making sure they are from different depths
3. Place all 3 pinches in a plastic sample bag to form a total amount the size of a table tennis ball
4. Squeeze out as much air from the bag before sealing
5. Write the horse’s name, age and sampling date on the bag
6. Submit for testing on the SAME DAY as collection, or keep refrigerated overnight if absolutely necessary
Happy poo-picking! 🐎
This was the footage from our gastroscope when we retrieved a piece of plastic lodged in a dog’s stomach today. Thankfully it saved him having to have a surgery!
