IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR KEEPERS OF HENS!!!

RED MITES !

The warmer weather brings with it this unwelcome pest, but we are here to help.

Red Mite is a parasite that lives in your chicken house and feeds on birds whilst they sleep at night. These small but deadly mites feed on all parts of the chicken including blood, feathers, skin and scales. Red Mite infestations can result in poor health, low egg production, weight loss and, in bad infestations, even death of the bird.

As our climate is changing Red Mite numbers have rocketed over the last few years. However, with vigilance, good husbandry and the right products this need not be the nightmare it at first appears.

Red mites feed on the bird between one and two hours each night. They tend to live in cracks and crevices in the hen houses as this is where they deposit their eggs.

When the nest conditions are correct the mite larvae hatch 2-3 days after being laid. The time it takes for a mite to go from egg to adult is just 7 days.

This short cycle can cause Red Mite infestations to grow very rapidly. Even without a food source Red Mite can survive for as long as 8 months making them a very hardy pest.

Constant vigilance is needed during warm weather but you should continue with a liberal sprinkling of Diatomaceous Earth Powder throughout the winter as well.

An initial telltale sign of infestation may be the reluctance of the hens to go into the house at night. Your birds may start to look anaemic and lethargic i.e. pale combs rather than red, and they may sit hunched up in a corner rather than actively scratching around.

The best time to check for Red Mites is early morning when they can be seen easily by the naked eye or with a torch. After feeding on the blood of the birds overnight the mites get their distinctive red colouring.

Another telltale sign is a build-up of a grey dust in the coop, this is the detritus from the mite. Look particularly under perches and in perch sockets, cracks and crevices for live mites.

BUT DON’T DESPAIR!!!!

At WCF we have lots of products and advice to help you get to grips of these pesky critters and get them under control.

Did you know?

Bones are a great natural way to clean your dog’s teeth. They also have ther**eutic benefits which aid dog wellness ! They are also a great way to chill after a gentle summer walk.

Our extensive Natures Menu range includes raw bones.

Here’s a few tips on feeding-

🦴 Never feed cooked bones- the cooking process will remove moisture, leaving the bone brittle. These are difficult to digest and liable to splinter.

🦴 Never cut or saw- select the right sized bone for your dog.

🧒 👶 🐩 🐕 Teach dogs and children feeding etiquette. Bones are “high resource”value.

🐩 Never leave your dog unattended with a bone.

🦴 Never feed butcher bones as their storage history is unknown and bacteria may be present. They are also usually chopped.

🗑 Dispose of bones after 24 hour defrost

With the hot weather finally here make sure your pooch is able to stay cool!
You can achieve this by avoiding walking your dog during the hottest times in the day, not doing too much high intensity exercise or play and making sure they have access to water and shade whilst sitting out in the sun.
We also have cooling mats and dog toys in store, if your dog enjoys a LickiMat why not freeze it first to make it a nice cooling enrichment activity!

Did you know that dogs have different blood types? 🐶🩸

Just like people, dogs have different blood types and they can either be DEA 1 positive or negative. Negative blood is in very high demand as this type can be given to any dog in an emergency, but it is also rarer with only 30% of dogs having it 😱

The charity needs more dogs who are likely to have the rarer negative blood type to come forward as donors and help them ensure this is always available for dogs who need it 🐩

If you think your large, happy, healthy, and confident dog could become a lifesaver, visit Pet Blood Bank’s website to find out more 👉 www.petbloodbankuk.org/dogs

With so many destinations in Penrith and the Lakes being dog friendly it’s important that your dog is properly socialised when out and about this Summer ! Socialisation is also essential when you visit the vets or groomers and it’s nice to have the reassurance that your dog can cope in a busy situation.

With this in mind WCF PENRITH have now completed 6 “Lock in” dog training events this year in conjunction with brilliant local dog trainer Jen Cartmel from Clever Dogs Dog Training

Dogs and handlers safely practiced essential skills such as meet and greet, sitting and laying quietly whilst other people and dogs were around, walking at heel on the lead up and down the aisles of the store, standing still for measuring and fitting of dog coats, cool coats and buoyancy aids, walking on to a weighing platform, basic recalls through the “aisle of temptation “ and more advanced exercises such as leaving your dog in a down position on a mat whilst you collect a list of shopping.

If you are interested in completing some of these activities you can always “collar” one of our team and have a go in store or if we have enough interest, give us a contact detail and we will look into running other “lock in” events in the evenings.

WCF Penrith promotes good dog citizens!

We stock a comprehensive range of walking gear, toys and training aids so that you and you best friend can safely enjoy your walks and adventures.

It’s Rabbit Awareness Week!

Dental disease is the most common health problem found in rabbits and is often caused by inappropriate feeding.

Dental disease can be caused by a lack of abrasive fibre(hay) in their diet which can cause the rabbit’s teeth to be overgrown and too painful for them to eat properly.

In order to help prevent dental disease you should feed your rabbit the appropriate diet with 85-90% feeding hay, supplemented by a small portion of nuggets. Hay is a fibre-rich food that helps to wear down the teeth.

DID YOU KNOW? A dog’s sense of smell is over 100,000 times more developed than a human’s? Dogs can also smell in 3D and some breeds have keener noses than others.

The latest of our “lock in” dog training events included a session on scent-work.

Here’s Fi and Tally making short work of it!

We could make good use of the dogs in store to locate lost pens and clipboards whilst we are replenishing the shelves 😄

A blend of low-calorie fibres with a light r**eseed oil coating provides slow-release energy which is ideal to fuel the naturally good doer horse or pony in work without creating any fizz!

Research has shown that horses fed a fibre and oil-based diet, such as Hi-Fi Molasses Free had lower resting heart rates and were less reactive to novel stimuli compared to horses fed the same amount of energy but from cereals which are higher in starch and sugar and therefore provide quick release energy.
