Founded over 25 years ago, our sanctuary site now provides a safe home for life to over 100 donkeys and horses, all rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment.

Over the last few years young Willow has formed a very strong attachment to Daisy, who is many years her senior, there are no age barriers with donkeys. Willow is very protective over Daisy and always stands over her when she rests ❤💞❤
Daisy past is one of horror and fear, she came from Romania and has always been a little bit timid and shy, maybe Willow saw a soul she wanted to care for......

It was classic chill and relax time yesterday morning, with all the donkeys gathered in one corner of the paddock, enjoying being around each other....totally calm and peaceful....
Amos (don't worry Ernie is just out of the picture) Olive and Flo settle down together, we don't think Flo could get much closer to Olive!! 🤗 Just to add to the flavour, a Magpie joins them, passing through life just like the rest of us ❤💞❤

Maisy, a very striking donkey, during some summers, when she has lost all of her winter coat completely, it shines. like a glossy chestnut 🤗
Several years ago, dear Maisy's Mum was sold while she was just a youngster, left tied to the back of a trailer, while her Mum was led away, she was traumatised. Since being at Flicka she has blossomed, is very friendly and can be quite cheeky and playful in a quiet way 💞 Maisy loves everyone in the herd, but often seeks out the gentle duo, Matilda & Violet ❤

Having you here at Flicka has brought us so much joy and laughter, you are comical, quirky and exceptionally loving, it's always so hard to get a decent photo of you when you insist on trying to either sit/climb on the photographers lap or lick the camera lense 😂 📷 😂

Such a gentle, quiet girl who although doesn't have a special donkey friend, gets along with everyone.
Peaches arrived at Flicka after some of our team went to help at the Pegasus Sanctuary in France. Peaches and Marla had been saved by Felicity who runs the sanctuary, thank goodness she did, their path would have been unthinkably grim.
We bought them back to live their days amongst our Flicka family, and what a privilege to have them here 🤗

A beautiful day yesterday and look who we caught up with, mini Minstrel ❤
Minstrel looks so very different from winter to summer, a thick teddy bear coat for about ten months of the year and then this gorgeous sleek and shiny coat for the summer, we hardly recognise him 💞❤💞
Minstrel has been at Flicka for an unbelievable 16 years!! He arrived from Romania, a tiny, thin little chap who had wounds all over his face and ribs, now he just glows with health and happiness 🤗🥰🤗

Despite the weather our group of enthusiastic Junior donkey carers had a wonderful day led by Fiona and Vicky who taught the girls all about donkey welfare and care.
The donkeys seemed very chilled and happy to have the company and pampering of some little people ❤ Just look at Annabelle donkey's face 🥰

Matilda & Violet ❤
Two beautiful girls who are totally bonded….we’re sure you all remember Matilda’s history when she was herded off a lorry with a stick, she was fear aggressive with ears back and eyes looking wild. When she was brought to Flicka she was broken.
Violet immediately gravitated to Matilda and stayed by her side constantly, within days Matilda softened, began to trust us and now has the most gentle nature and kind soul, both girls are very affectionate with each other and people.
We often talk about the physical state of donkeys when they arrive, but the emotional trauma they suffer goes deeper than we can possibly know and often stays with them for a lifetime.
So, as well as their physical health we have to be vigilant with their mental health, what heals those inner scars more than anything is a companion. Donkeys crave company of other donkeys, they bond for life, when they grieve the loss of a soul mate can be life threatening.
Such is their sensitivity and depth of emotions.

Buttons (behind) and Walter enjoy some moments of peace together…..💞
It’s quite uncanny how these two boys share a similar history, Walter was giving unlicenced rides on a retail park, locked in a trailer and left in the car park night after night, no daylight, no freedom and no greenery to enjoy, until finally a worried shopper raised their concern.
Buttons was on the yard of second hand scrap dealer, shut away in a metal trailer permanently, standing on 40 cm of muck when he was found. He was so unaccustomed to daylight he could barely open his eyes, then consequently suffered infections in both eyes for several weeks after his rescue.
Both boys were painfully thin, overgrown feet, covered in lice and had coats soaked in urine and dung. This is the reality of neglect 😢
Not any more boys, they are both so friendly and very much the adventurers, Buttons loves to climb on the walls to reach up for morsels off the bushes and trees, Walter is a naughty one, and likes to get stuck in when there’s mischief – usually with Danny in the frame somewhere!!! 😅

Silver was rescued on 31st December 2020, the very last day of Flicka's silver jubilee year, and while we had all been disappointed that our plans for Jubilee celebrations were all cancelled due to lockdown, the arrival of this frightened, lonely donkey made us forget all about our disappointment.
Dear Silver, his mother has been sold leaving him far too young to be alone and subsequently neglected. When he arrived at Flicka it was Teddy donkey who did the baby sitting duties, the two have remained good friends and often gravitate back together.
Silver loves the company of all the other donkeys and is often a part of the Paddington entourage, such a lovely, friendly chap who loves his human family too 🥰🤗🥰

The boys enjoying the afternoon sunshine earlier this week (unlike yesterday 😕)
Alot of people ask us about Ernie and his lack of hair covering, particularly on his face and in patches across his back, it isn't quite so prevalent during the winter when his coat is thick and long. Dear Ernie has had many tests, bloods and skin analysis to try and discover why......but there is nothing to give any reasons for his bald patches. It is very much like alopecia in humans.
It doesn't bother him at all, but we have to be very vigilant in sunshine which is why he wears a uva protection sheet and face mask, through which he can see very clearly, equally we always ensure it comes off when he is inside or not needed outside so his skin can get the air. Then of course we need to apply plenty of sun block to the delicate soft skin around his face and nose (our Flickaholics have generously kept us with a good supply).
They are such lovely boys and Ernie has the title of the most playful donkey at Flicka 💞🫏💞

The merchandise doesn't feature our logo and is not being sold by our charity. Please do not click on the link or buy anything from these people. Instead please report them to Facebook. We have seen profiles under the name of Zara Zara, Alisa Ally, Milly Mia, Eva Evana, but they could come from any number of fake profiles.
Once again -THESE POSTS AND MERCHANDISE ARE A SCAM AND IN NO WAY ASSOCIATED WITH FLICKA.
We are so sorry to have to share this post due to some awful people trying to exploit your compassion and care for the donkeys, but we thank you, as always, for your wonderful ongoing support for them ❤ x

Such a beautiful girl and always with her soul mate Doris 💞
These two girls were rescued and brought to Flicka. They were both very sick, we kept a vigil each day and through the nights for the first week and really feared that Hermione was not going to survive, such was the severity of her condition and infection.
As you can see now, she is the picture of health and spends her days with Doris constantly by her side 🤗

Dino now lives in the big herd, he is very sociable with everyone, but doesn't have a special friend, he is happy to mix and match with whoever is around, sometimes enjoying some play with Danny 🫏🫏

Tickety is very affectionate and loves cuddles, she is also quite playful with Dora, a younger member of the group 🥰 who had to join the senior ladies because of her much, much older soul mate Nellie. Relationships can be quite complicated 🤦♀️😅

Our Twilight Herd of Lavender Ladies ❤🥰❤go out into the paddocks early morning, but as it gets towards midday, despite having shelter, we feel it prudent to bring them into their Willow Barn, with all the windows open for some breeze and some wet towels to cool them (think Acorn is wearing hers off the shoulder while Iris likes her stripes) 😅 which we keep going until early evening when it's cooler.
Our senior ladies need some help to keep cool, they're not as adept as the younger donkeys in regulating their body temperature in extreme weather conditions, hot or cold. They all seemed very happy to wear this years au couture towel fashion 😘

We opened up another paddock for the Flicka Family, they heard Rachel's voice (Mum to all of them 🤗) from two paddocks away, letting them know she was opening another gate and here they come, quite sedately really 🥰 As you can imagine, none of us here ever watch television 😂 who needs it when we have all these gorgeous donkeys ❤🥰❤
We moved the Baby Bachelor Boys, Little Bear, Freddie, Robbie, Ned and Benji, into a different paddock this week..... They loved 'brazing' the overgrown nettles and tasty growth alongside the fence. As many of you will have seen, after a huge ‘muck-out’ and spring clean of Bertie’s Barn, we took the opportunity to carry out some Feng Shui 😅 With the west side of the barn in need of some repair due to water damage, we also altered the layout slightly giving the donkeys more room and some windows to look out of, another plus is our visitors can now walk further down the side of the barn and get closer to the donkeys ❤💞❤ A huge thank you to Allen & Fernie Builders for doing a first class job on the barn, and for developing a special bond with Susie 🤗 Yesterday was their maiden voyage back in the barn (donkeys and visitors), we’d like to invite you in too – enjoy!

We quietly move amongst them filming them in their natural habitat whilst they forage for food. The Wild Ass are 'brazers' (browsing and grazing) and love to find the tasty grasses that other herbivores may leave behind”. Roughly translated, Flicka’s rescue donkeys enjoy some peaceful, evening grazing time 😅😄😅
After two muck out days to empty the big barn our hard working Flicka team get their backs into spring cleaning - anything for our precious donkeys 🥰 Mark, Rachel, Nina and James – who will definitely need a shower when they get home!!😅
Good Monday morning everyone 👋 We thought you'd like to see the donkeys from the other side of the meadow gate. We think their excitement to get there was worth it ❤ This meadow field is left to grow from the end of each summer, till the donkeys go in at the beginning of the next summer, they are brazers, love long grass and all the tasty bits in between. Just listen to the sound of pleasure......munching grass 🥰

Yesterday the donkeys enjoy springtime 🥰❤🥰 Turn up the volume!! There is something so special about seeing happy animals, but even more special knowing the harrowing situations they came from. This is just pure joy….. Charlie, our vet filmed this clip and we’re sure she won’t mind us quoting her... "It was the loveliest life-affirming joy for me, it made my day….makes it all worthwhile". We hope you enjoy this as much as we did, a second clip is coming along shortly 😉
