📢 PASS WIDE AND SLOW – AWARENESS RIDE SEPTEMBER 2025 📢

🚜🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️🏍️🐎🚗

We’re calling on all riders, cyclists, walkers, bikers, and even mobility scooter users to join us this September for an awareness ride to help raise road safety awareness for all vulnerable road users!

This is a fantastic opportunity to come together and educate drivers on sharing the roads safely while following the Highway Code. The event is organized in a proper and legal manner, ensuring a positive and respectful message is delivered.

📌 Interested in taking part or organizing a ride in your area?
Please message Diane Ford for guidance on how to do it correctly and safely. She can provide advice on organizing a lawful and effective ride.

💡 A few important points to remember:
✅ There are no laws restricting the number of people riding, cycling, or walking together.
✅ Third-party insurance is strongly advised for anyone on the road, though it’s not a legal requirement.
✅ Safety and awareness are our top priorities—we ride to educate, not to confront.

Let’s make a difference together and help create safer roads for everyone! 🐎🚗🚜

🚗📸 Capturing Bad Driving? Here’s What to Do! 🚴‍♂️🚦

If you record your journeys—whether as a horse rider, cyclist, motorcyclist, or pedestrian—to catch dangerous or careless drivers, it’s important to report incidents through the right channels.

✅ For driving offences only (such as dangerous driving, illegal overtaking, running red lights, or mobile phone use while driving), submit your footage to your local police force’s online portal (e.g., Operation Snap or a similar initiative in your area). These services are designed specifically for handling road traffic offences captured on camera.

📞 If you experience verbal abuse, threats, or aggressive behavior, this goes beyond just a driving offence. In these cases, report the incident by calling 101. Threatening behavior and road rage incidents may be classified as public order offences, which require a different type of investigation.

🚔 Why report? Every submission helps make the roads safer for everyone. Your footage could assist in holding reckless drivers accountable and preventing future accidents.

Stay safe, stay aware, and let’s work together to make the roads a safer place for all! 💙🚦

Now, let's put this into perspective for those who think horse riders should take a test before being allowed to ride on roads.

Horse riders have never caused a single death on the road. Yet, drivers—who do cause deaths every single day—are all required to take a test to prove they are capable of driving a dangerous vehicle.

Every single one of the 1,695 road deaths in 2023 was caused by a motor vehicle. Not one was caused by a horse rider.

Every day, five people die and 80 are seriously injured on UK roads. Not because of horses, but because of cars, lorries, vans, and motorcycles.

Drivers have tests, licenses, and road laws to follow, yet they still kill thousands of people every year.

This proves that taking a test means absolutely nothing when it comes to preventing deaths on the road. The real issue isn’t horse riders—it’s dangerous and reckless driving.

🚨 We Need Your Help – No More Silence! 🚨

Yesterday, I met with my MP, and while I’m glad he read the memory files and reached out to the transport minister, the response we got back was pathetic—dismissive and standard political talk with no real action. This is exactly why we need to push harder.

We’re fighting for change, but we can’t do it alone. When we ask you to share posts, send emails, or take action, it’s because every single voice matters. Yet, the last post Diane asked you to share was only seen by 600 members—out of how many? And how many actually acted?

So ask yourself: Why are you here? If you believe in this cause, then we need you to step up. Otherwise, we’re just spinning our

This isn't just my battle—it’s ours. Let’s make noise and demand real change.

🌟 Pass Wide and Slow: Protect Lives on the Road 🌟

Every ride matters. Whether it's a horse and rider enjoying a quiet country lane, a cyclist commuting to work, or a pedestrian crossing the road, we all deserve to feel safe.

When passing horses or other vulnerable road users:
🐴 Slow down to a maximum of 10 mph.
🚗 Leave at least 2 meters (or more if safe).
🛑 Be patient—only pass when it's completely safe.
🤝 Show kindness—your care can save lives.

Together, we can make the roads safer for everyone. Spread awareness and join the campaign today!

🚦 Safety starts with you. Will you help us protect lives?

Dear Members,

As we begin a new year, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the core mission of our group: to promote the Pass Wide and Slow campaign, raise awareness about road safety for horse riders, and educate all road users—especially drivers—about how to coexist safely and responsibly.

However, it has become clear from some of the comments in this group that there is a significant lack of understanding about basic driving rules and safe practices. This is deeply concerning, as this group was created to educate and support riders, not to excuse or defend dangerous driving behaviors.

Basic Driving Knowledge is Essential

Some of the comments we’ve seen suggest that many members may not fully understand fundamental rules of the road. For example:

Overtaking on Blind Bends: This is extremely dangerous, yet some comments imply it’s acceptable. It’s not. Blind bends hide oncoming traffic, and overtaking here risks collisions that could be fatal.

Overtaking Near Junctions: Passing another vehicle close to a junction is not only reckless but often illegal. Drivers must anticipate that other vehicles or pedestrians could emerge unexpectedly.

Passing Horses Too Close or Too Fast: Horses are flight animals, and a sudden noise or close pass can easily startle them, endangering both the rider and the driver.

If you are not aware of these rules, please take the time to educate yourself. As drivers, ignorance is not an excuse when lives are at stake.

For Non-Drivers (NAD):
please add NAD to a comment, please consider this when participating in discussions. Lack of driving experience can make it harder to understand why certain behaviors are unsafe. That’s okay—this group is here to educate and inform—but it’s important to listen to experienced members and not dismiss concerns raised by riders or seasoned drivers.

Why This Matters

Unsafe driving has real and devastating consequences. Many riders in this group have lost horse

Blaming riders instead of drivers when the latter are at fault is problematic for several reasons:

1. Misplaced Accountability

Drivers have the primary responsibility for operating their vehicles safely. Holding riders accountable for mistakes made by drivers shifts the focus away from where it should be: the driver’s behavior, skills, or decisions.

2. Power Dynamics

Drivers operate heavy, fast-moving vehicles that can cause severe harm. Riders, especially pedestrians or cyclists, are more vulnerable and have less control over their safety in traffic scenarios.

3. Victim-Blaming Culture

Blaming riders perpetuates a culture of victim-blaming, where the vulnerable party is scrutinized for their actions instead of addressing systemic or individual driving issues.

4. Overlooking Systemic Problems

Poor urban planning, lack of proper pedestrian infrastructure, and insufficient cycling lanes are often the real culprits. Shifting blame to riders ignores these larger structural failures that create unsafe environments.

5. Driver Impunity

When drivers are not held accountable, it reinforces bad habits and dangerous driving practices. This lack of accountability can lead to more accidents and fatalities.

6. Safety Culture

Building a culture of safety requires everyone to take responsibility. Prioritizing driver accountability promotes safer behavior for all road users, not just riders.

7. Data Shows Drivers Often At Fault

Research frequently shows that drivers are responsible for the majority of collisions with pedestrians and cyclists due to speeding, distractions, or failure to yield. Ignoring this reality skews public perception and hampers efforts to improve safety.

By addressing driver faults rather than shifting blame to riders, we can focus on solutions that protect everyone, such as better driver education, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and improved infrastructure.

Join Us for the Next Awareness Ride this September!

Change doesn’t happen overnight—but it begins with us. Together, we’ve taken steps to promote safer roads for riders and horses, but there’s so much more to do. Securing a new law or even gaining enough signatures for our petition has proven to be a challenge. But our mission is crucial: to ensure drivers, government officials, and the public notice us and understand our needs.

Here’s how we can make a difference:

1. Educate Drivers

Use social media to share posts, pictures, and posters explaining how horses may react on the roads and how to pass us safely.

Encourage riders to use cameras while out riding, capturing incidents or positive examples to spread awareness.

2. Ride Together for Change

Imagine the impact of 200 riders across the UK, all taking to the roads in September to highlight our cause. This is more than a ride—it’s a united statement.

3. Engage Local Communities and Leaders

Involve reporters, media outlets, and local authorities like police officers, MPs, and councillors in our efforts. Invite them to join us, witness the challenges we face, and become advocates for our cause.

This September, let’s take a stand.
Every rider who joins, every driver who learns, and every official who listens brings us one step closer to safer roads for all. Together, we can create the change we need.

Let’s make this ride unforgettable. Who’s with us?
