🌟 Pass Wide and Slow: Protect Lives on the Road 🌟

Every ride matters. Whether it's a horse and rider enjoying a quiet country lane, a cyclist commuting to work, or a pedestrian crossing the road, we all deserve to feel safe.

When passing horses or other vulnerable road users:
🐴 Slow down to a maximum of 10 mph.
🚗 Leave at least 2 meters (or more if safe).
🛑 Be patient—only pass when it's completely safe.
🤝 Show kindness—your care can save lives.

Together, we can make the roads safer for everyone. Spread awareness and join the campaign today!

🚦 Safety starts with you. Will you help us protect lives?

Dear Members,

As we begin a new year, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the core mission of our group: to promote the Pass Wide and Slow campaign, raise awareness about road safety for horse riders, and educate all road users—especially drivers—about how to coexist safely and responsibly.

However, it has become clear from some of the comments in this group that there is a significant lack of understanding about basic driving rules and safe practices. This is deeply concerning, as this group was created to educate and support riders, not to excuse or defend dangerous driving behaviors.

Basic Driving Knowledge is Essential

Some of the comments we’ve seen suggest that many members may not fully understand fundamental rules of the road. For example:

Overtaking on Blind Bends: This is extremely dangerous, yet some comments imply it’s acceptable. It’s not. Blind bends hide oncoming traffic, and overtaking here risks collisions that could be fatal.

Overtaking Near Junctions: Passing another vehicle close to a junction is not only reckless but often illegal. Drivers must anticipate that other vehicles or pedestrians could emerge unexpectedly.

Passing Horses Too Close or Too Fast: Horses are flight animals, and a sudden noise or close pass can easily startle them, endangering both the rider and the driver.

If you are not aware of these rules, please take the time to educate yourself. As drivers, ignorance is not an excuse when lives are at stake.

For Non-Drivers (NAD):
please add NAD to a comment, please consider this when participating in discussions. Lack of driving experience can make it harder to understand why certain behaviors are unsafe. That’s okay—this group is here to educate and inform—but it’s important to listen to experienced members and not dismiss concerns raised by riders or seasoned drivers.

Why This Matters

Unsafe driving has real and devastating consequences. Many riders in this group have lost horse

Blaming riders instead of drivers when the latter are at fault is problematic for several reasons:

1. Misplaced Accountability

Drivers have the primary responsibility for operating their vehicles safely. Holding riders accountable for mistakes made by drivers shifts the focus away from where it should be: the driver’s behavior, skills, or decisions.

2. Power Dynamics

Drivers operate heavy, fast-moving vehicles that can cause severe harm. Riders, especially pedestrians or cyclists, are more vulnerable and have less control over their safety in traffic scenarios.

3. Victim-Blaming Culture

Blaming riders perpetuates a culture of victim-blaming, where the vulnerable party is scrutinized for their actions instead of addressing systemic or individual driving issues.

4. Overlooking Systemic Problems

Poor urban planning, lack of proper pedestrian infrastructure, and insufficient cycling lanes are often the real culprits. Shifting blame to riders ignores these larger structural failures that create unsafe environments.

5. Driver Impunity

When drivers are not held accountable, it reinforces bad habits and dangerous driving practices. This lack of accountability can lead to more accidents and fatalities.

6. Safety Culture

Building a culture of safety requires everyone to take responsibility. Prioritizing driver accountability promotes safer behavior for all road users, not just riders.

7. Data Shows Drivers Often At Fault

Research frequently shows that drivers are responsible for the majority of collisions with pedestrians and cyclists due to speeding, distractions, or failure to yield. Ignoring this reality skews public perception and hampers efforts to improve safety.

By addressing driver faults rather than shifting blame to riders, we can focus on solutions that protect everyone, such as better driver education, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and improved infrastructure.

Join Us for the Next Awareness Ride this September!

Change doesn’t happen overnight—but it begins with us. Together, we’ve taken steps to promote safer roads for riders and horses, but there’s so much more to do. Securing a new law or even gaining enough signatures for our petition has proven to be a challenge. But our mission is crucial: to ensure drivers, government officials, and the public notice us and understand our needs.

Here’s how we can make a difference:

1. Educate Drivers

Use social media to share posts, pictures, and posters explaining how horses may react on the roads and how to pass us safely.

Encourage riders to use cameras while out riding, capturing incidents or positive examples to spread awareness.

2. Ride Together for Change

Imagine the impact of 200 riders across the UK, all taking to the roads in September to highlight our cause. This is more than a ride—it’s a united statement.

3. Engage Local Communities and Leaders

Involve reporters, media outlets, and local authorities like police officers, MPs, and councillors in our efforts. Invite them to join us, witness the challenges we face, and become advocates for our cause.

This September, let’s take a stand.
Every rider who joins, every driver who learns, and every official who listens brings us one step closer to safer roads for all. Together, we can create the change we need.

Let’s make this ride unforgettable. Who’s with us?
Please message Diane Ford and ask for the info

Important Petition Update: A Call for Accountability and Action

Hello everyone,

I’ve recently sent out an important update on our petition, which most of you should have received if your email preferences are set to accept updates. This petition represents our collective interests, values, and hopes for change. Yet, despite having a community of over 55,000 members, a significant majority have yet to sign. Let me be clear: if we truly believe in this cause, this level of engagement is not only disappointing—it’s unacceptable.

We’re working toward a meaningful goal that requires broad support. If you’re here, then you’re here because you believe in our cause, or at the very least, are curious enough to have joined. This isn’t a space for passive participation. Our work depends on active support and unified action, not silent agreement or simple membership. With the numbers we have, we could be creating far more impact than we currently are. Now is not the time for excuses, silence, or sitting on the sidelines.

To those who work in media, particularly the reporters and writers in this group, I urge you to consider the power you hold to amplify this message. You have a platform that could bring our petition into the public eye, helping us gain the traction we need to make a compelling case to Parliament. This cause is bigger than any one of us, and your involvement could make a significant difference. I’m asking you to step up, use your skills, and help us create a ripple effect.

If you’re in this group and haven’t signed the petition, ask yourself why. If you are here because you stand with us, then now is the time to prove it. Passive members—those unwilling to lend their signatures—need to consider if they truly want to be part of this community. We don’t need people who are indifferent to the cause or doubtful about our mission. We need dedicated supporters who understand the stakes and are willing to contribute to our collective efforts.

This message is not directed at the committed individuals who have already signed and continue to show up for this cause. To you, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Please don’t take this as criticism—your support is recognized and deeply appreciated.

And to those who might feel uncomfortable with this message or find my tone direct—so be it. I’m here to push for change, not to sugarcoat a call to action. If you find yourself offended by the urgency of this message, consider whether this mission truly aligns with your own values and whether you want to be part of a community that is fighting for change.

Let’s not let this opportunity slip through our fingers. This is the moment to act, and it’s on each of us to step up and be part of the movement we say we believe in. Sign the petition, share it widely, and let’s work together to make sure our voices are heard.

Thank you for your attention and, most importantly sign the petition

Today, 29th October is National Day of Remembrance for Horses Lost on UK roads. 🐴

In 2023 at least *66 horses lost their lives on UK roads due to careless driving. 66 horses who were loved by their owners and were taken too soon. 66 horses who could have been alive today if motorists had followed the simple highway code rules. Pass Wide and Slow.

On 29th October, National Day of Remembrance for Horses Lost on UK Roads we will remember them. Whether we hack out in their name, or simply give our horses an extra carrot and a cuddle let us come together to remember them. Fill social media with photos of our beloved equines and remind motorists to pass wide and slow.

* figures from statistics reported to BHS. Nb not all fatalities will have been reported.

These photos aren't even a quatre of those Lost
