Post-sedation care for horses: Essential steps and best practices
Did you know Atypical Myopathy is a risk in the autumn?
Atypical Myopathy poses a significant risk to equines, causing severe muscle dysfunction and potentially fatal consequences, particularly prevalent during autumn. The disorder stems from eating sycamore seeds, seedlings and leaves. When eaten, they release a toxin that slows down the horse’s energy production in the muscle fibres.
Early detection is paramount; be vigilant for signs such as weakness, muscle tremors, dark urine, recumbency/lying down and impaired mobility.
Should you suspect Atypical Myopathy, promptly seek veterinary assistance by contacting 01736 362215.

Care of the new-born foal The equine species has adapted to move as soon as possible after birth and to exhibit few outward signs of disease to cope with life surrounded by potential predators. This makes close monitoring of foals essential for the first 24 hours of life and early veterinary intervention important if there is any concern. Here is a video with some points to remember with a new-born foal.
What does dishing mean? In an ideal world, all horses’ legs and feet would be straight. Sadly, this is not the case and many horses have gait abnormalities. Dishing is a common abnormality of limb flight (how the leg moves through the air) and is described as a winging-out movement of the front feet (abnormal circular motion). This is more often seen in horses who have a standing toed-in conformation.
