I have completed Building Training Skills with the Dogs Trust and I am a Certified Shelter Dog Behaviourist with the International Association for Animal Behaviour Consultants. All of the methods I use a compassionate, focusing on developing your dog’s mind to better equip them for success. We’re expecting some hot weather this week. If it feels warm to you, it’s even hotter for your dog.

Skipping a walk is always the safer choice when it’s too hot. No dog has ever been harmed by missing one, but heatstroke can be deadly.

Find out how to spot the signs and keep your dog safe with our vet-approved guide: https://www.pethealthclub.com/uk/pet-advice/heat-stroke-in-dogs

On lead or off? That is the question 🤔

With the good weather and green walks it can be so enjoyable to walk with our dogs off lead. What is stopping us?
🛑 Your dog is still in training, so recall is not (yet) reliable on walks.
🛑 You have not received the support needed to learn how to teach a reliable recall that you can safely use on walks.
🛑 Recall is great at home or on walks when there are no distractions, however, your dog stops responding as soon as there are other dogs or something to chase.

Are you struggling with teaching recall? Book a call to discuss how I can help:

🤨 What can we do if our dogs cannot go off lead? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Though walking our dogs off lead can be a great form of exercise, without recall training it is difficult to demonstrate the control needed to keep everyone safe. What are the alternatives?

Longlines can be a great tool for providing our dogs with the freedom to explore while also providing use with control to step in and help if needed. Training takes time, but you and your dog want to enjoy walks out in nature. To help exercise your dog off lead safely while out in the countryside I recommend using a longline. There are a few types you can try:

Nylon Longline
Great for smaller dogs and puppies.

Lunge Line
Typically used for horses but they are great for medium and larger dogs too! The material is comfortable to hole and is less likely to burn that nylon.

BioThane Longline
These longlines are waterproof and antimicrobial which means that they do not smell! Great for those muddy walks in winter. The added bonus of this material is that they are unlikely to tangle, which makes them great for letting them run along the ground behind our dogs. This is great for keeping your hands free and providing that ‘off lead’ feeling for our dogs. If you are worried that they are not going to come back, simply step on the longline, pick it up, and reel them in.

🌳 Walks in Nature 🐕

When we are caring for a dog who is reactive on walks, we need to consider the best places take them that is great for their mental health (and ours too). Some of the joys of walking our dogs in rural areas includes:

POSITIVES 😊
✅ Enriches our dog’s nose with all the different smells found in nature.
✅ Inspires our dogs to explore, fuelling their curiosity and encourages them to exercise.
✅ Allows you and your dog to decompress in nature.

What do you enjoy and find challenging about rural walks with your dogs?

If you are struggling to enjoy walks with your dog in, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Book a free Behaviour Support Call with me to discuss how I can help:

Top Tip: Training Lead

The equipment we are discussing this week is the training lead. This lead has a clip on either end (instead of a loop handle) with a couple of metal rings along the lead. This allows us to attach to our dogs at two-points of attachment. Some of the benefits of using a training lead include:

🐶 I recommend attaching to your dog on their harness and collar. This way if one of the pieces of equipment fails, you are still attached to your dog.

🐶 If your dog is reactive, two-points of attachment makes it a lot easier to steer your dog away from their trigger, moving them away to help calm them down.

🐶 The two-points of attachment also helps to keep your dog close, which can be helpful to help keep your dog safe (e.g., away from the road or trigger).

🐶 You can also switch to a single point on their harness to use the lead as a longline during parts of your walks where there is greater visibility and space. This means on your walks you can easily switch between the longline for giving your dog freedom and two-points of attachment when you need to keep your dog close.

🐶 If your dog pulls then I recommend try getting a harness with a D ring on their chest, connecting one clip to their chest and the other to their collar. Clipping to your dog’s chest means that they are unable to direct their weight and power forwards. This can help to make it a lot easier to hold your dog if they are pulling.

Does your dog pull on their lead or are they reactive on walks? Get in touch to discuss how I can help.

☀️ SUMMER IS HERE 🐕

It is important that while we enjoy the warmer weather with our dogs that we monitor our dogs for signs of heat stroke.

What are the Risks?
If left untreated heat stroke can lead to shock, seizures, and organ failure.

How Hot is too Hot?
Can you comfortable hold your hand against the tarmac for at least 5 seconds? If not, postpone your walk until it is cooler.

Be sure to call your vet if you see any of these signs:
🚗 Wet your dog and put the air conditioning on full blast before setting off to your vets to start the cooling process.
📱 Ensure you have the details for your closest emergency vets saved on your phone in case of an emergency.

☀️ SUMMERTIME IS HERE ☀️

With the warmer weather our walks are looking greener and we are swapping our wellies and coats for our summer wear!

Taking our dogs for walks in nature can be so rewarding. It is a nice escape to go somewhere green and enjoy the fresh air. Green spaces to take our dogs can include:
• Fields
• Forrests
• Nature Reserves where dogs are allowed

Where are your favourite walks?

How do you keep track?

This week we are learning more about our dog’s enrichment needs. If you have read our recent blog you realise they have quite a few! How on earth are we meant to keep track of all this while also managing our own lives?!

Here at Canine Kin we create an online diary for your dog so you can easily access it from your mobile or computer. This way you can update how you and your dog are progressing and we can offer advice and support when needed. Your dog’s behaviour plan is added to their unique dog diary so you can easily see what training you need to do from your mobile phone.

How do you exercise your dog’s mind?

You may have heard of brain training for humans 🧠 but what about for dogs?

It is important to exercise our dog’s mind and body. We may do this by completing a crossword or Sudoku. Not sure our dogs will know how to do this though (much less hold a pen). How do we train their mind? We can play games at home like puzzles and training or we can get them to take part in sports for their brains, such as Mantrailing, Rally, or Obedience.

Comment below games and activities you and your dog enjoy to play to exercise their minds.
