LONG CLAWS

As well as not looking very nice, long claws can make it uncomfortable and awkward for your dog to walk and is one of the top five most common disorders affecting dogs in the UK.

Walking on a long clawed paw puts pressure on the wrong part of the foot causing discomfort and pain. To minimise the pain your dog may move slightly differently which can cause problems with other joints and muscles. They can grow long enough to curl and grow into the dogs pad.

Just like your nails your dog’s nails are constantly growing. Our pets spend much of their time indoors or running on soft surfaces,such as lawns, they get very little wear on the claws. Taking your dog on regular walks on pavements or hard surfaces will help shorten their claws, but may not be enough to keep them as short as they should be.

When do your dogs claws need trimming? As a general rule when the dog is standing on a flat surface, their claws shouldn’t touch the ground. If you hear their claws clicking as they move around on tiled or hard floors they may need a trim. If they are curling at all it’s time for a trim.
