🚫 Myth: Dental issues only affect my pet's mouth

✅ Fact: Dental disease can lead to systemic health issues like heart and kidney disease. Prioritising dental health can promote a longer, healthier life for your pet.

🚫 Myth: Anaesthesia-free dental cleanings are safe and effective

✅ Fact: While they may seem less risky, it is illegal for anyone other than a veterinary surgeon to clean under the gums. Anaesthesia-free cleanings only address surface issues. Professional cleanings under anaesthesia allow for thorough examination and cleaning, addressing underlying problems.

💬 If you have questions or concerns about your pet's dental health, our team is here to help.

🚫 Myth: Dry food is sufficient to keep my pet's teeth clean

✅ Fact: There is currently no evidence that dry food has teeth-cleaning benefits, it’s not enough on its own. Regular brushing, certain chews, and professional cleanings are vital for optimal dental health.

🦷WHAT HAPPENS DURING A DENTAL PROCEDURE🦷

Let us walk you through the process! During a dental cleaning, our experienced team performs a thorough examination of your pet's oral cavity (mouth) to assess their dental health. This includes checking for signs of plaque and tartar buildup, gum disease, tooth decay, depth of any gum pockets and other dental issues.

💡 Next, we use specialised dental instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your pet's teeth, both above and below the gum line. This process, known as scaling, is essential for preventing dental disease and maintaining oral hygiene. Our team takes great care to ensure your pet's comfort throughout the cleaning process, using gentle techniques and monitoring their vital signs closely whilst they are under general anaesthetic.

🔍 In addition to scaling, we also perform a dental polish to smooth the surfaces of your pet's teeth and help prevent plaque from re-accumulating. If any dental issues are detected during the cleaning, such as fractured or decayed teeth, we will discuss treatment options with you and develop a plan to address them.

📅 Regular dental cleanings are an essential part of your pet's preventive care routine, helping to keep their teeth and gums healthy and reduce the risk of dental disease. If it's been a while since your pet's last dental cleaning or if you have concerns about their oral health, don't hesitate to schedule a free nurse appointment with us.

Let’s squash this myth 🔮

Dog breath isn’t always an ‘old dog thing’, which for many can be the assumed thing.

Just like us, cats and dogs can experience dental issues that require attention.

This , take a moment to assess your pet's breath. If it's less than pleasant, it could be a red flag for dental issues such as gum disease, plaque buildup, or tooth decay.

If you’ve noticed any new dental symptoms in your pet, contact us today. ↙️

Two of our vets - Joanna and Jess - were involved in Scotlands first FutureVets camp last week at Oatridge College. The camp was a huge success and hosted 46 young Scots who are interested in pursuing veterinary as a career.
The camp is part of a wider initiative to secure Scotlands next generation of veterinary professionals, in an aim to address the shortage of veterinary staff in Scotland which both threatens our food security and production as well as our companion animal care.
Jim Fairlie the Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity was involved in opening the camp and if you watched BBC news last Wednesday evening you would have seen Joanna’s interview as part of the news story!

Ever wondered what your pet's teeth look like below the surface?

🦷Did you know that dental x-rays are a crucial tool in assessing your pet's dental health? While a visual examination of your pet's teeth can provide valuable information, it often only reveals part of the picture. Dental x-rays allow veterinarians to see below the gum line, where many dental issues hide from plain sight.

🐱This is especially important for our feline friends, as dental problems in cats are often more subtle and harder to detect without x-rays. Cats are masters at hiding signs of pain or discomfort, and dental issues can progress silently until they become severe. Dental x-rays help identify problems such as tooth root abscesses, resorptive lesions, and bone loss that may not be apparent during a physical exam alone.

😁By providing a comprehensive view of your pet's oral health, dental x-rays enable vets to diagnose dental issues early, before they progress to more advanced stages. Early detection allows for prompt treatment, which can alleviate pain, prevent further
complications, and improve your pet's quality of life.

📞If your pet is due for a dental exam or you have concerns about their dental health, don't hesitate to schedule an appointment with us!

How YOU can spot build up on your pets' teeth!?

🦷Did you know that plaque and tartar buildup can lead to serious dental issues in pets? Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, can accumulate on your pet's teeth within hours of eating. Over time, if not removed through regular brushing or professional cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar, which can lead to gum disease, tooth decay, and other dental problems.

🪥Signs of plaque and tartar buildup include bad breath, yellow or brown discolouration on the teeth, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating or chewing, and very rarely changes in behaviour such as pawing at the mouth or reluctance to play with chew toys.

🐾If you notice any of these signs, it's essential to schedule a dental exam with your vet promptly. Early detection and treatment of dental issues can prevent pain, discomfort, and more severe health problems down the line.

⭐Remember, prevention is key when it comes to dental health! By brushing your pet's teeth regularly, providing dental chews or toys, and scheduling annual dental check-ups, you can help prevent plaque and tartar buildup and ensure your pet's teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come.
