All of our team are animal lovers, many with extensive menageries of animals they look after. You can be sure that we'll provide the same level of care for your animal, as we would want for our own. We moved to new purpose build premises in 2001, to provide the very best veterinary service; with a central location, easy access, plenty of parking, reception space, treatment rooms and a dedicated eq

uine centre. Our vet centre offers a comfortable waiting area (with a dedicated small animals waiting area), an on-site dispensary and laboratory (which means that we can provide a faster diagnosis). We also have an isolation ward, and diagnostic and surgical suite, to offer your animals the very best care available.

Symptoms can be subtle and are often mistaken as just symptoms of getting older.

Don’t ignore them, they could be signs of High Blood Pressure (Feline Hypertension)

🐱Hypertension Awareness Month 🐱

High blood pressure in cats (Feline Hypertension), is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in around 1 in 5 cats over 9 years of age.

The condition is treatable with mediation, but most senior cats don't receive regular blood pressure checks to monitor for the onset.

If you have any concerns or would like to speak to one of our vets, please call the surgery to get booked in for a blood pressure check ☎️

So to conclude our Vet Nursing Awareness Month posts we thought we would film a few things that our RVNs get up to in the clinic!

We aren’t able to video everything our nurses get up to behind the scenes as our patients require our full attention (the animals you see are staff pets and thankfully not unwell!). Please enjoy our video and we hope that you have enjoyed the staff profiles and extra info on our wonderful team of nurses!

We are very lucky at TVV to only employ veterinary nurses who are registered and therefore are able to ensure that the standards we are able to provide your pets is extremely high.

We hope you’ve enjoyed, if you have any questions about our team or how to become an RVN please get in touch- we’d be more than happy to help 🐾 🩺 👩🏼‍⚕️

🌟 INTRODUCING: SARAH 🌟

She has worked at TVV for 4 years.

Last year Sarah took her vet nursing skills overseas to South Africa - below is a little bit more information from Sarah about what she got up to!

🌍 During my holidays in 2024 I ventured off on a self funded trip to volunteer and work alongside an incredible team of vets and nurses from Ikhala Vet Clinic in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

🦓 We got the opportunity to develop our nursing skills working with a variety of animals including: lion, giraffe, zebra, hyena, buffalo, the incredible white and black rhino and many different antelope.

🩸 During our time we carried out many capture procedures including: blood sampling, treating infected joints or injuries, pregnancy scanning and testing for Tuberculosis.

🦁Picking a favourite animal to work with would be impossible but I will never forget blood sampling both a lioness and black rhino for genetic analysis.

🩺 One of the most challenging anaesthetics to monitor during captures was that of the giraffe. When their head drops to the same level as their heart when anaesthetised they sustain a massive change in blood pressure and to increase survival rate once knocked - down we gave a medication to reverse the effects of the anaesthetic as soon as we had placed ear plugs and eye masks on them. For the rest of the procedure all that immobilised the giraffe was approximately 8+ people lying along the giraffes neck - a rather stressful and strenuous task! Around 1 in 40 giraffes that are anaesthetised will unfortunately not survive the anaesthetic.

🦏 I was very fortunate to gain an invaluable insight into the conservation efforts that are ongoing in the Eastern Cape. Without these efforts the world is at risk of losing many of these incredible species.

I look forward to using my nursing skills to travel and assist in many more countries in the future.

A few bits of housekeeping!

🐾 INTERESTED IN VET NURSING? 🐾

📚Upon achieving specific grades at school, there are two main routes to go down which include:

• apprenticeship/college diploma (2-3yrs)
• university degree (3-4yrs)

Both of these routes are approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and a list of the courses can be found on the RCVS website 💻

During the courses, time is split between theory learning in a classroom setting and developing practical skills in a surgery setting. This allows the students to be fully prepared and know what to expect when they start their career as an RVN 📝🐶
