can be a stressful time for pets. Dogs use body language to tell us how they feel. Being aware of these signals can help keep your children and dogs safe around each other.

Are our pets protected from the cold? 🤔❄️

Many people think that our pets are protected from the cold by all their fur, but this isn’t actually true. 🧊

Like us humans, our pets can also develop a dangerous and potentially deadly condition called hypothermia. Any pet can become seriously ill if the temperature of their body drops too low, and acting quickly and doing the right thing could save your pet’s life. If you suspect your pet may have hypothermia, it’s important to call your vet straight away and follow their advice. 👩‍⚕️⚠️

🎅 The holidays are a time to indulge and enjoy yummy Christmas treats 🍖, but for curious cats 🐈, this means potentially toxic foods can be left within easy reach ☠️

🍫 Chocolate
🍖 Turkey and chicken bones
🍷 Alcohol
🍇 Grapes, currant, raisins, and dried vine fruits ➡️ found in Christmas puddings, mince pies, and panettone
🧅 Onions, garlic, leeks, shallots, and chives ➡️ these could be in sausages, gravy, stocks, chutneys, marinades, and soups
🧀 Excessive treats ➡️ human food and cat treats

What tips do you have for keeping Christmas treats away from your cats ❓💬👇

🚨If you think your cat has eaten potentially toxic food, contact your vet immediately ️ 🚨

Important Information 🚨

Our emergency vets have seen cases these past few weeks concerning pets who have managed to get their paws on a mince pie or two! We're urging owners to be extra vigilant when having one of these treats in the house and to ensure they're kept up high and out of reach from curious noses. This includes leaving out a mince pie and carrot for Santa and his reindeer. 🎅

Mince pies contain sultanas, raisins and currants, which can be highly toxic to our pets.

Please be aware that this applies to both dogs and cats.

If your pet ingests a mince pie or even a mouthful, contact your vet as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can visit your local out-of-hours Vets Now clinic.

🎄 Did you know some festive plants can be harmful? 🙀 We recommend keeping these ones out of reach during the holidays ⬇️

🌺 Poinsettia
🍒 Christmas cherry
🌲 Pine trees
🌺 Amaryllis
🌿 Mistletoe
🌿 Holly
🌿 Ivy
🌸 Lilies

🚨If you think your cat has eaten a plant they shouldn’t have, contact your veterinary clinic immediately for advice ☎️

Why not decorate your home with artificial plants instead 💐❓ They are equally beautiful and can be reused each year ♻️

Brrr...it's chilly out there! If it's cold for us, it's cold for our pets.

Your cat may like to explore outside the house, but make sure it has ready access to a warm shelter in this cold snap. Consider keeping older cats inside during extreme cold spells too.

Antifreeze is extremely poisonous to cats ☠️ During the winter ❄️ we try to prevent freezing by using ethylene glycol, more commonly known as antifreeze, which can be found in a few common places:

❄️ Car radiators
❄️ Screen wash
❄️ De-icers
❄️ Water fountains
❄️ Snow globes
❄️ Some radiators may still contain ethylene glycol, so keep cats away from leaks

Cats only need to drink a teaspoon 🥄 or less of antifreeze to cause serious illness and even death! 😿

Signs of antifreeze poisoning ⬇️
⚠️ Sickness
⚠️ Wobbly – appearing drunk
⚠️ Weakness
⚠️ Tiredness
⚠️ Drinking and urinating more

🚨If you think your cat has ingested antifreeze, contact your veterinary clinic immediately for advice ☎️

Cost Of Living Crisis - Help Available For Pet Owners

If you are concerned about the costs of looking after your pets or are struggling, here some of the places you can turn to for help at the moment.

**And if you are in the fortunate position of not needing to seek support, please consider donating to charities like these, so you can help other pet owners through this difficult time!**

RSPCA

The RSPCA help food banks to support pet owners by getting their staff to collect and deliver pet food to organisations who need it. To find a food bank providing pet food near to you, click here; https://www.rspca.org.uk/costofliving/foodbank

You can read their advice on how to reduce costs with your pets here; https://www.rspca.org.uk/costofliving

Cats Protection

The main support Cats Protection are able to give cat owners is funding towards neutering costs. It is absolutely vital that all cats are neutered, not only to keep the population under control but also for their own health, which will lead to lower vets bills!

The neutering vouchers are means tested, to find out if you are eligible and about schemes local to you, click here; https://www.cats.org.uk/what-we-do/neutering/financial-assistance

Here is their advice on other things you can do if you are struggling; https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/getting-a-cat/taking-care-of-your-cat-during-the-cost-of-living-crisis

PDSA

The PDSA provide free or low cost veterinary care to those who are in receipt of certain benefits. This can be at their own hospitals but also at some private veterinary clinics as well.

To check if you are eligible and what kind of support you can access, click here; https://www.pdsa.org.uk/pet-help-and-advice/eligibility

And a quick tip! If you think you are eligible and you may need their support, try to register with them before you need them. It makes things much easier and can really help you to access the care your pets need as soon as possible.

And here is their advice for reducing pet care costs; https://www.pdsa.org.uk/what-we-do/blog/low-cost-ways-to-care-for-your-pet

Blue Cross

The Blue Cross provides free or reduced cost veterinary care at their own hospitals. To see if you have one in your area and if you might qualify for their help click here; https://www.bluecross.org.uk/register-at-our-animal-hospitals

They also have a "Pet Care Clinic' scheme, where owners can register and be supported with low cost veterinary care and some free treatments. Places on this scheme are limited and, again, subject eligibility.

As with the PDSA, it is much better to register in advance of needing treatment.

The Blue Cross also run pet food banks, you can see if you have one local to you here; https://www.bluecross.org.uk/register-at-our-pet-care-clinics

In addition, they also will give non-judgemental advice over the phone on a wide range of issues you may be dealing with including behavioural, veterinary care and costs. If they cannot help directly, they will do their best to signpost you to places who can. Contact them through their website; https://www.bluecross.org.uk/

DogsTrust

The Dogs Trust are offering discounted training classes and behaviour support to dog owners. To find out more and how to apply, click here; https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/dog-school/discounted-dog-school

They have also opened pet food banks at some of their centres. Check here to see if you have one near to you; https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/rehoming/our-centres/dog-food-bank

Schnauzerfest

Schnuazerfest are a small, privately run charity who mainly, but not exclusively, fund veterinary care for Schnauzers and Schnauzer-crosses and dogs who are survivors of puppy farms or who are in rescue situations but they do consider applications from other dogs.

You can find out more about them here; https://www.schnauzerfest.org/

Street Paws

Street Paws support pet owners who are experiencing homelessness. They have outreach clinics in Manchester and Belfast and often their clients are referred to them via Local Authority Hosing Schemes, so if you work for one of those, please keep Street Paws in mind if you need to find help for pet owners.

Find out more about their work here; https://streetpaws.co.uk/

If you know any other resources or support pet owners can access if they need help, please put the details in the comments.
