Cracking morning training with Frank and another handler, in preparation for a couple of trials before the seasons out.

I learned today that I can still shoot straight & Frank hadn't a clue what the shotgun was! But he sat to the flush, whistle & shot, then self deployed for the bird......which he did manage to fetch back to hand, 5 months ago he didn't do any of that & would never deliver to hand.

So upon reflection everything is there, just needs finishing off during the summer, which it certainly didn't feel like first thing this morning, -6 πŸ₯Ά

A day of two halves.......

Cancelled the obstacle/jumping workshop due to clients travelling from distance and the treacherous roads.

The puppy class had two new faces and again, two that due to weather didn't want to travel. But it was lovely to have 4 spaniels, being spaniel puppies! It wasn't quiet carnage, needed a couple more cockers for that!
Lead work, recall, retrieving & some controlled socialisation.

Finished with a couple of 1:2:1 lessons with a labrador & 6 month old springer.

Well done to everyone today, biting cold again, but everyone did really well, taking away plenty of things to practise.

Great start to the New Year! With plenty already planned, building on the past year's success at our new home, Bodsey Farm, Bodsey Toll Road, Ramsey, Cambs, PE26 2XH

A full day of 1:2:1 sessions, all spaniels, three cockers, one springer & a welsh springer (who I have a soft spot for as she is an abused rescue, & I love seeing her improvement every couple of weeks) three new clients & two returning, both of which have been doing their homework & are benefiting from putting the effort in.

I can train 'you' to train your dog, but only you can put the time & effort in practising the drills to achieve the end results.

My training mantra:
Commitment, Consistency, Patience & (especially for cocker owners) a Sense of humour! πŸ˜‚πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

A bit fresh today! πŸ₯ΆπŸ₯ΆπŸ₯ΆπŸ₯Ά

All January training dates, 1:2:1, group (weekend & midweek, breed specific), workshops & live game training days are now live on our website & page.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all our clients, land owners, gamekeepers & of course our sponsors, Dog & Field, for all your support this year, & also Deborah & the ladies at Ruby Cooper's Coffee House.

Its been a roller coaster year, officially retiring from the job, saying goodbye to my dad who sadly passed away on Christmas Eve, losing our training ground of two years, losing two young dogs Posy & Violet, one being this years novice dog & another in the pipeline for the next year or two, then waiting what seemed like an eternity to secure a long term lease with Abbots Ripton Estate at our new and permanent training ground at Ramsey. Then by fate Frank was returned to us and will trial in January, in readiness for next season.

Since then we have gotten bigger and better with 1:2:1, group & workshops filling up nicely. Puppy classes reintroduced as everyone seems to have a puppy at the moment!

The Ground Hire has been a real success, not just because of the type of cover and ground available, or the obstacles, jumps, lake & river, nor the birds that have wandered over due to the feeders being full, but because its as real as you can get, its not manicured, its tidy, but if you train in what you expect to work in there is an element of reality.
Clients like the training paddock, then being able to progress onto the cover crops, hedgerows & finally putting it all together in the training pen.

More planned for next year, we have a new shoot that is hosting two walked up spaniel training days in January, hoping to offer a few days on rabbits, we look to expand into fortnightly Saturday working, weekend ground hire & training pen hire, some new kennels for our residential dogs, a shop/meeting point stocking Skinners and Dog & Field, onsite toilet, J Regs Seminar, BVA Eye Test clinic, Dog First Aid, our Working Test, hoping to be able to offer some Racomitrium Gundogs merchandise, & an Open Day, Retriever Workshops will continue to be taken by Craig Horwill, a second training pen (both will be reseeded come spring, with grasses, and some cover crops so as it can be used all year), plus some more jumps and pens, another 5 acres which will laid to grass of differing varieties. Although still in date with two CRB checks, I will be applying for another and look at holding a Young Handler Workshop to continue to encourage newcomers to the sport and our next generation, which now more than ever is at real risk.

Plus a litter of springer puppies due in January! ❀️

Hopefully able to offer Frank at stud! 🀞

So if you want to find out more about us and are interested in anything we offer, please reach out.
I will continue to offer a professional service, with constructive, positive feedback & encourage newcomers into the addictive world of gundogs!

Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to you all, I hope you have a lovely peaceful festive period and if you're on Santa's good list get what you wished for........I know I'm not getting mine, trees not up just so Jo can make sure he doesn't leave a cocker under it! πŸ˜‚πŸ€«

Hope to see some young, old and new faces back in 2026! ❀️

Its all coming together nicely with Frank, having him around more rather than outside has formed a much greater bond 100%.

We were treated to lunch and a hot chocolate (thanks Jim Starr) his first time inside such an establishment. Didn't put a foot wrong.

He managed to wrangle some bacon off me and Deborah gave him a venison dog treat.
I dont need an excuse to pop in for a coffee, but this is certainly helping his all round temperament.

PS The Christmas menu is out & looks amazing!

⛔️⛔️⛔️ Parking Notice ⛔️⛔️⛔️

Now the wet months are here, no cars to park near reception due to the muddy track and the area getting cut up.
You are fine to pass through the green gates and park on the gravel area.

4x4 vehicles are fine, but......
If its on road tyres, engage 4 wheel drive!
If its a pick up, still engage 4 wheel drive!
If its a Land Rover and can get to the parking area without breaking down, happy days.......for those that dont know, you already have permanent 4 wheel drive unless its a plastic Land Rover like a hairdressers Evoque or Velar, depending in spec! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚

Thank you for your cooperation!

PS I own Land Rovers! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

Just a boy & his mum, enjoying somewhere different, he now needs to learn to get under it & not bounce over it!..............always something to work on!

Nice being able to throw dummies about & send them by name, although someone didn't get the memo & self deployed a couple of times, didn't you River........Frank, steady as a rock! πŸ‘Œ

Now I've finally got some stediness into Frank, I don't need him to look at me to be sent (as he kept self deploykng after 3 or so seconds) and can send him earlier, as I know he will wait.

This is an exercise that I've done with all my dogs from puppies, throw a retrieve just outside of their comfort zone, let them run in and when they get to the fall I want them to hunt the area and not give up until they find it or as they get older, show me you've tried, then look at me for help if you fail.

It builds trust in the partnership, neither of us can do it without the other!

Anyway, in the making of this video I learned my throwing arm needs a little more ooooomph. I now have a Woodcock dummy stuck at the top of the tree, dont laugh it gets better........red blanks, Lucky Launcher II and a red torpedo dummy, missed and landed 3 post codes away........five canvas launcher dummies also failed to bring it down, two of which are also stuck in the same tree! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I must apologise for my potty mouth at the end, good job he's not a cocker or it would have been worse!
