Good morning everyone ☀️ I wanted to post a few tips for keeping your pets cool and my baby Teddy is modelling for us in the paddling pool 💦
🐾 Cool Matts/coats
🐾 Paddling pools are great but remember if they get wet do not let them just lay in the sun after as they may become over heated.
🐾 Maintain hydration with plenty of fluids available and keep in mind if outside to change the water so it does not become warm.
🐾 Wet towels can be draped over them but please do not leave them on as then the towels will heat up with their body temperature and have an adverse effect.
🐾 Freeze lick matts, kongs, ice treats/blocks
🐾 Create shaded areas, keep rooms cool, fans, air con etc
🐾 Ice packs are great for small animals and they can be used as long as direct contact is not on the skin/fur. Ice burns can occur and equally do not force any animals to keep them on if they do not tolerate.
Please just also keep in mind any pets with joint, skeletal issues or muscular issues should not be in the paddling pool or in cold water for prolonged amounts of time. This can aggravate the arthritis or joint problems and it is a good idea to still towel dry them afterwards.
Black coated pets also feel the heat more and tend to heat at a faster rate and should be kept as cool as possible along with the other short nosed breeds such as pugs, frenchies, Lhasa apso etc breathing may be difficult for these guys
Cats are a bit more challenging but cool matts, frozen treats to lick. 🐈
Signs of heat stroke or signs you need to be calling your vet are: heavy panting, vomiting and diarrhoea, weakness, collapsing, abnormal gum colour or sticky gums, collapsing and extreme signs may be seizure.
⚠️ If you’re worried please call your vet as it’s better to be safe than sorry. They will advise accordingly
Keep safe everyone ♥️ Yesterday felt like a challenge so let’s try keep cool with these temperatures increasing.
