Always rinse your biological filter media with water from your aquarium. If you have a filter in your pond, rinse the media in a tub of water from your pond. This is because the filter media is home to billions of beneficial bacteria and tap water kills the good bacteria.

Ammonia and nitrites are poisonous to fish, which is why you need to maintain the good bacteria in your tank, to ensure they are removed.
