Rabbit Awareness Week: Day 1- Companionship ❤
Rabbits are extremely sociable animals and can get depressed without social interaction from other bunnies. So when you’re thinking about getting rabbits, you should consider whether you would be able to care for two of them at the same time. A healthy male and female, who are already neutered and bonded, make ideal pairs. If you are introducing rabbits to each other for the first time you should introduce them slowly and follow the advice of a vet or rescue centre.
Rabbits should not be kept with other species; they are prey animals so larger animals will be seen as a threat which will cause stress. They also shouldn’t be kept with smaller animals, such as guinea pigs, as they are likely to bully them. Rabbits also carry a bacteria which can be harmful to guinea pigs.

Z - is for zoo work 🦁

A couple of our Veterinary Nurses have been given the opportunity to visit local zoos to assist specialist Vets to perform procedures on the MUCH animals. Alongside the Vets, are usually a large team including keepers, anaesthetists, multiple vets and specialists from different disciplines (so any work or tests required, can be done under one anaesthetic) - as sedating a big cat, is not a straight forward task!!

Our Nursing Manager Caroline has a keen interest in exotic species and has gained additional certificates in the topic. Caroline is in the image, preparing Nigel the puma for surgery, clipping the fur to create a sterile surgical site. Caroline was then able to assist with the procedure, along with our Exotic Specialist Sarah and a team of others!

Y - is for YELL!! (we struggled with this one!) 🆘

The first thing we do in a crisis, shout for help! There are a number of different circumstances this can apply to - when we're alone in a threatening position (like a pet trying to kill us 🤣), when a patient is recovering from anaesthesia and becomes distressed (we rush to turn off lights and support the patient) or in an emergency situation where we need all hands on deck. Veterinary Nurses are all trained in animal CPR and what to do in an emergency.

In the photo we have Phoebe our Veterinary Care Assistant practicing chest compressions on a stuffed toy - being guided by an RVN.

X - is for x-rays (or radiographs if you want to use the proper term) 🩻

Under direction of a Veterinary Surgeon, RVN's can sedate, position, take and process x-rays, all without a Vet's help. We know how to position different species for multiple views of each area of interest, what settings to use, and how to process the x-rays. We then have them ready for a Vet to assess and diagnose.

Here at Byre the Nursing team do a lot of radiography, particularly of legs, as we do a lot of orthopaedic surgery (commonly fractures and cruciate repairs). Abdomens are also commonly imaged, if there's a concern of foreign body ingestion.

W - is for wildlife nursing 🐦

Even before we gained an Exotic's Specialist, we regularly had wildlife bought in by members of the public. This usually includes birds and hedgehogs, but recently we have seen kittens (baby rabbits), mice and even a baby fox!! Veterinary Nurses often dedicate a lot of their own time to rehabilitating wildlife, feeding and nursing them back to health, whilst ensuring they receive appropriate care and support for their species.

Wildlife Nursing is another path RVN's can chose to go down, with further education available.

V- is for vaccinations 🦠

Here at Byre, our Veterinary Nurses usually administer most puppies and kittens their second vaccination. As with most other things, we are governed by the Veterinary Surgeons Act, meaning a Vet must carry out a physical examination in order to administer a first vaccination and booster. But under direction of a Vet, us RVN's can administer the second vaccination and sign the vaccination card on the Vet's behalf.

U - is for ultrasound 💻

Veterinary Nurses can perform ultrasounds under direction of a Vet. Although we are not legally allowed to diagnose, we can report our findings to the Vet, to help aid diagnosis and guide treatment. Commonly RVN's do FAST (Focussed Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) and POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) scans, where we check for things like free fluid (e.g. blood, following an RTA).

Like most things, Nurses can study to gain certificates in ultrasonography, allowing them to do much more in-depth scanning!

T - is for training 📚

We've already discussed the different types of training that Veterinary Nurses can do, but we can also train others! RVN's can become Clinical Coaches, which means they are allocated to students, being a mentor, a trainer and a helping hand in practice. Clinical coaches often teach nursing students day-one skills, which they then practice until confident enough to sign them off from their skills log.

S - is for schedule 3 procedures ✂️

These are procedures that, under Schedule 3 of the Veterinary Surgeon's Act (one of the laws we are governed by) Veterinary Nurses can perform if directed by a Vet. As students, we are taught very little about performing surgical procedures, but we can partake in CPD and additional qualifications, as well as being taught in practice by our Vets, to master these skills. We are allowed to perform:
🩹 Wound stitch-ups
🩹 Toe and tail amputations
🩹 Minor mass removals (if deemed non-malignant)
🩹 Aural haematoma repair
🩹 Oesophageal feeding tube placement
🩹 Surgical drain placement (if not entering a body cavity)

R - is for reception duties ☎️

Veterinary Nurses often have to support the reception team in first-opinion practice. This involves taking phone calls, serving customers, actioning emails, cashing up and organising paperwork. We even triage emergencies over the phone!

You can often find one of us in the reception area, as our jobs generally involve a selection of admin-based tasks.

Q - is for qualifications 👩‍🎓 This year's VNAM theme is progression and this is just one aspect.

Veterinary Nurses have to study for 2-4 years before they can even call themselves a Registered Veterinary Nurse. This involves attending college or university, whilst working as a student in practice, under continuous supervision. Once qualified and on the RCVS register, RVN's can then continue to study a huge array of subjects, often following their passions and what they enjoy most in practice. We can gain certificates, post-graduate certificates and masters in a lot a common topics, some even going as far as PhD level!

Legally, RVN's must complete and log 15 hours of Continuing Professional Development per year, to remain on the RCVS register. This can include reading journals, listening to educational podcasts, attending seminars and much more!

P - is for phlebotomy 💉

Our Veterinary Nurses take patient's blood and place intravenous catheters on a daily basis. We have to know the anatomy and function of blood vessels, associated risks, appropriate equipment, and suitable techniques - which varies between species. We then have to master how to do this on a pet that doesn't know what's about to happen, doesn't like to sit still or be held, is hairy, and sometimes trying to bite/scratch us!

O - is for ordering 📋

Each veterinary practice is different, but here at Byre, our Veterinary Nurses are in charge of stock control and ordering. This includes orders of medications, food, consumables and some equipment too. We ensure all products are in date, stored correctly, injectables discarded after their 28-day broach date and keep our shelves full of everything we might need, whilst not over-ordering - sometimes a bit of a juggling act, as it can be difficult to predict what products will be needed!

Some of our Nurses are also in charge of practice-wide stock taking, every few months.

M - is for monitoring inpatients 🩺

Within practice there can be a number of patients spending the day in our wards. Each and every one requires monitoring, of different levels. This can include simple observations such as food intake and urine output, or complex critical care with continuous 24 hour one-to-one care, monitoring ECG's, blood transfusions, seizure activity - the list goes on!

Patients are often feeling poorly, or can be stressed and fearful in a new environment. It's our job to provide the most suitable care for each individual patient, to support their physical and mental wellbeing ❤

L - is for lab 💉

We've already touched on a laboratory technique with Cytology, but there is so much more that a Veterinary Nurse does on a regular basis. We run various blood and urine tests daily, utilising specialist equipment and machines to help our Vets diagnose poorly pets.

We have to know what equipment is required and how to run each individual test, often needing knowledge on how to interpret those results too!
