I thought we would share a video of one of our current patients. We haven’t posted about her because she was really critical when she arrived and we were concerned that she may not survive as so many young hedgehogs do not.
We will post more about her in the future, but we just wanted to remind you of our out of hours service over the bank holiday weekend. As usual VetsNow are covering for us until 8 am on Tuesday 30th August. So if you have an emergency please call them on 01733 512192 for any help you may need. They are open for the whole weekend, for any emergency your pets may have. Otherwise, we will see you on Tuesday next week.
We hope you enjoy your extra holiday time.
Do you remember Dexter? We posted a video in September post his general anaesthetic for his hormone implant. He visited us today for a check up. He looks great, his coat is fantastic and he is much happier in himself. Have a look at his last video- looks like a different ferret.
Say hello to Stumpy! He was found trapped in a fence a few weeks ago, where he had managed to half amputate his own hind leg ( not nice). We finished the job in a more surgical fashion hence the name. Like Rita, he has grown from 310g and is now 530g! We are just waiting for his stump to heal now. But look at him move!
Rita gets Sonic!
Rita is continuing to grow become more grumpy and generally be #MoreHedgeHog . Compare this video to her first and you can see why this weekend she is braving outside and is free ( with backup support obviously!)
Dexter after his General anaesthetic
An unusual patient for us this week, Dexter the #Ferret visited us for an implant to be placed to try to help him with his Adrenal gland disease. Ferret's just love to have a place to hide, and he seemed very happy with his towel. He had a very short Gaseous Anaesthetic to have the implant placed under his skin between his shoulders blades in the same place as a microchip would be found in a Dog or Cat.
Adrenal gland disease is quite common in middle age Ferrets. It's being seen more commonly because they are living longer as pets and that they tend to be neutered early. Surgery is the prefered option with removal of the affected gland, but can be interesting depending on which adrenal gland is affected due to blood supply considerations and Dexter has not been well enough recently for a long GA.
Rita's Putting on weight!
Morning, A quick update on Rita. She has put on a small amount of weight over the weekend, and as you can see is much less wobbly and now able to speed across prep table. Her treatment for Lungworm continues with wormer and antibiotics, and has taken to Dry hedgehog food and Live mealworms much to Louise's disgust!
Meet Rita
Would you like to meet Rita?
She came into us on Thursday because she was seen foraging during the day and walking with a very wobbly gait.
On Thursday, we examined her whilst she was placed under anaesthetic. To allow us to check for fractured limbs, her mouth/teeth, and to check for wounds that we could not see as she was rolled up tight! She is underweight for the time of year probably because she is late born and is not suitable for hibernation. If you notice she is breathing really fast, this is probably because she has lungworm, a really common condition in Hedgehogs. We have treated her for fleas and ticks because although they are normal for hedgehogs they were not helping her weight, and we did not fancy becoming food either! We have treated her for lungworm and provided her with other supportive treatments, so now we have to wait and see. She is eating and is much steadier in her walking so fingers crossed! If you see a hedgehog out during the day is not normal, they are looking for food which normally they would find at dusk. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society #BritishHedgehogPreservationSociety has a great website full of information and help.
