This is incredibly important. There is someone commenting on a lot of posts telling people that any hedgehogs 450g or under need to be overwintered right now.
This is WRONG. We've just started autumn, tonight's night temperature is 16°!

Please do not scoop up juvenile hedgehogs out at night to weigh and pester your local hedgehog rescue to take them in, unnecessarily handling hedgehogs causes parasites to increase due to stress, inadvertently forcing them to have to be treated. No one needs to be weighing any hedgehogs out at night unless you can quite clearly see they're the size of a small apple, squeaking for their mum or there's noticeable issues ie wounds, ringworm, tick burden.

WHILE ITS MILD LEAVE THEM WILD

We also don't partake in overwintering anymore, we ensure they are 650g and over in winter and as long as the weather is favourable we release into supported areas so they can be wild. Keeping them in captivity for over 6 months is of no benefit and can cause captivity stress and unhealthy weight gain.

The females are now producing their second litters of the year and it'll be those being birthed into October/November that 'may' need rescue support to get up to a good weight, but that all depends on the weather, the temperature and access to their natural diet. There are no strict rules anymore when it comes to their behaviours because of climate change and how our seasons vary.

Antibiotics are essential when treating many conditions in animals and people, but bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics that we use in human and veterinary medicine. Below are a few of the common risks at this time of year.... 🍫Chocolate- is poisonous to dogs and cats – so keep it well out of their reach. 🍷Alcohol -can cause lots of problems like vomiting and difficulty breathing. Keep your glass in your hand, or somewhere your pet can’t reach it. 💐Flowers- Lilies are toxic to cats and can cause their kidneys to shut down. Other flowers can cause harm too so keep them out of reach from your pets.

Our wonderful vet Anne has a very special birthday today! Many of you will have met Anne over the years as she started with us as a newly qualified vet in 1987. In 1991 she moved to Southend on sea for a few years, she then came back to us in March 1994 and been here ever since! We hope you'll all join us in wishing her a very Happy Birthday! 🎁🎂🎉

Update on Stanley (was monty but just didn’t suit him). He’s doing really well, I’ve managed to get him standing today which is a massive achievement and a whopping 1kg growth in 2 days.
