It’s easy to get caught up in the little things when working with your dog. Rather than focus on the negatives let’s concentrate on the positives.

👇🏻 What’s went well this week with you and your dog - no matter how big or small??

Mine is that both pooches recovered well during an on-lead walk after being ambushed by an off lead dog.
They were both covered in mud after being jumped all over and visibly wired so the walk was cut short. After a good sleep they were back to normal for their next walk 🥰

For today’s I want to celebrate my greatest loves - which of course is my dogs (Don’t worry, hubby knows where he is in the pecking order)

🌈 Pup taught me all about unconditional love and getting the dog you need, not necessarily the dog you want

🌈 Buddy taught me patience and understanding. That just because the breed is the same, doesn’t mean that personality and behaviour will be

🐾 Gamora taught me all about loving after loss. She continues to teach me that I can still love just as fiercely

🐾 Lenny continues to teach me that smaller dogs have the biggest personalities

All 4 of my dogs came from rescue backgrounds, from their experiences I had no right to expect their love or trust. And yet they each gave and continue to give both, unconditionally ❤️

We’re half way through a 1:1 puppy program for the black spaniel 🥰

In true spaniel fashion everything is 100mph and uber exciting.
We’re helping him to harness that energy into productive ways and focus on his human better

My next is to apply how you teach your dog something new to a goal of yours.

When we teach our dogs new tricks or behaviours, we keep sessions short and sweet. We train multiple times a day.

🐾 Maybe you’re wanting to achieve 10,000 steps a day. You could start by doing 100 steps every hour.

🐾 Perhaps you’re wanting to learn a new skill (for me it is knitting) Set aside up to an hour a day that you can practice.

🐾 If you’re wanting to do something like a couch to 5k there are apps or running groups that will help you achieve this.

By starting small and gradually increasing either the difficulty or duration we build muscle memory and stamina. We’re setting ourselves (or our dogs) up to succeed in the long term.

As this block of classes comes to an end this week it’s time to get ready for the next round of Puppy Classes

Thursdays at 6pm at Boddam Public Hall

🐾 Suitable for pups 8-20 weeks old

🐾 You will learn the fundamentals to set your puppy up to succeed.

🐾 Your puppy will learn how to respond appropriately around other people/dogs.

Mine is that hubby has got a walking belt and started taking Gamora on runs with him.
We wondered if she would go full Husky and attempt to run at full speed. Instead she did the muggiest thing ever and barely upped gear from a walk 😂😂

For today’s I’m celebrating this 10/10.

In true Dachshund style, he’s a little dog with a big personality and an intelligence to match 🥰

With 1 session to go from his puppy program we’ve almost achieved all of his humans goals.

We’re halfway through his sessions and there’s already a massive improvement with focus on his human during a walk.

Now we start tackling recall 💪 This cutie is led by his nose and is super nosey so utilising a technique that grabs his attention will be key

My next is to switch off now and again.

Our smart phones are designed to be as addictive as possible. From the colours, to app notifications. Everything has been designed to keep us checking our phones. Even more so when it’s connected to a smart watch.
But does your phone sometimes cause more harm than good?

There have been studies that show a direct correlation between social media and the effect it can have on mood.

Consider limiting this by;

🐾 Reducing the amount of apps that send you notifications

🐾 Turning off notifications completely on your smart watch

🐾 Set different ‘focuses’ for different times of the day. Meaning you won’t receive certain notifications during those times

🐾 Aim to take a solid couple of hours in the day where your phone isn’t beside you.

🐾 Aim to have set times where you go on social media apps

Today I belly laughed because Gamora put herself in a ‘middle’ on a walk. Then backed out, put herself back in a middle 4 more times 😂 I couldn’t not give her a biscuit when she looked so happy with herself

A little snippet of our first training session from a few months ago, conditioning Lenny to a backpack. Len has had bad legs since the day we brought him home. At the start, we couldn’t walk more than 10mins without him becoming sore and chewing at his legs. We built this up gradually, to the point he was joining Gamora on 10mile walks. We started noticing last year that the discomfort was coming back. Now he manages around 7 miles (over 2 walks) but still has that desire to be out and about. Hubby was categoric in not wanting a pram for him 😂 (even though Len would love that) so instead we opted for a backpack - give Len the height to look around and be nosy. 4 years of loving you. Happy 4th gotcha day for my stunning girl 🥰 We’ve come so far together in 4 years, she’s learned so many new behaviours and cues - middle being one of her faves 😍 I’m a firm believer in you get the dog you need, I definitely needed Gamora when she came into my life!! In true Husky style she’s faaaar too clever for her own good, never seems to learn new cues normally and definitely keeps me on my toes 🙈 We’ve now well and truly been her longest home, and seeing how much she’s settled and thrived makes my heart fit to burst ❤️ I just love watching her play with Lenny in their own unique way.
