And ... that's it for 2024
Everyone say. "Merry Christmas" ho ho ho
This place has a lot of street dogs, all living side by side, laying on the road and pavements. People walking over them, round them, past them. Cars, lorries, bikes, buses, tuk tuks speeding by. Children running and playing. The sound of a dog bark is very rare. We've not seen a dog fight another dog or react to the presence of a person. We've watched stray dogs wag their tails at the approach of someone and follow others with that beautiful expression that only a dog has. They live a tough, but harmonious life, alongside each other, and people. Scavenging for what they can get and spending their day in a 'relatively' comfortable spot (even if it is in the middle of the road).
These dogs my be crawling with fleas, have worms and in need of a good steak, but, blimey, every single one looks so happy.
Is 2 or 3 good meals, a life isolated from the social interaction of other dogs, the lack of freedom to roam and choose with who they hang out with, what a dog really really wants? When did we become so omniscient to decide for our animals welfare and enjoyment? And, since when was incarceration and isolation in the dog's best interests?
Starting to understand more clearly why there are an increasing number of behaviour related problems amongst today's pets!!
Weekend warriors. Walking the walk (no talk!!)
Ludo update... it's snowing in Finland and the boy has new boots.
And another weekend gone by so quickly!!
I need a new, active, agile buddy, now Ludo, the wonder dog has a fancy new life abroad...AND I think I've found him.
I think we'll be doing a lot more with this guy...
Almost 4 years to the day and the boy is off to start the next chapter in his exciting life.
22 hours of travel, several stops on the way. What an awesome boy.
Finland watch out, Ludo is here!!
When you hear it's going to be a nice weekend...
This is a young, energetic, working cocker spaniel. All the work I do with this dog in daycare, is about keeping him close and wanting to hang out with me. Whether that's through varied food rewards, altering treat delivery or play it's about the space around me being a good place to be.
So often we concentrate on our dog having a good recall ... work on this and your recall will be taken care of.
This is the new Acme dog whistle. Unlike the old plastic whistle, this one is rubberised; so much smoother on the lips and so much softer on the hand!! It also comes in some very trendy colours. I went for black and orange. So much kinder on the eye.
BUT... even to me, who's ears have, in the past, been abused by the sound of Royal Naval gunfire, it sounded different. I put it to the test...
Yep. Where's my dog's reflex to the sound? They heard it, they noticed it, they then thought about it. They did come, but it wasn't instant.
We are now in the process of conditioning the new whistle!! So I better not lose it.
The best time to pair any sound or cue is when distractions are low. Trying to train straight out of the blocks is difficult. I want to ensure 100% success and I'll do that when I'm confident of achieving it. Then each day i'll up the ante (proof the behaviour) and train in more challenging environments but also where and when I'm still confident of achieving the desired behaviour.
I've got steak for tea, 'cos Ive been a good boy. Happy Saturday y'all.
He just loves the attention ... such a good pup.
Happy Birthday buddy. It's been a crazy year and you've given us a lot of love and a lot of laughs 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎈 ❤️
