When you hear it's going to be a nice weekend...
This is a young, energetic, working cocker spaniel. All the work I do with this dog in daycare, is about keeping him close and wanting to hang out with me. Whether that's through varied food rewards, altering treat delivery or play it's about the space around me being a good place to be.
So often we concentrate on our dog having a good recall ... work on this and your recall will be taken care of.
This is the new Acme dog whistle. Unlike the old plastic whistle, this one is rubberised; so much smoother on the lips and so much softer on the hand!! It also comes in some very trendy colours. I went for black and orange. So much kinder on the eye.
BUT... even to me, who's ears have, in the past, been abused by the sound of Royal Naval gunfire, it sounded different. I put it to the test...
Yep. Where's my dog's reflex to the sound? They heard it, they noticed it, they then thought about it. They did come, but it wasn't instant.
We are now in the process of conditioning the new whistle!! So I better not lose it.
The best time to pair any sound or cue is when distractions are low. Trying to train straight out of the blocks is difficult. I want to ensure 100% success and I'll do that when I'm confident of achieving it. Then each day i'll up the ante (proof the behaviour) and train in more challenging environments but also where and when I'm still confident of achieving the desired behaviour.
I've got steak for tea, 'cos Ive been a good boy. Happy Saturday y'all.
He just loves the attention ... such a good pup.
Happy Birthday buddy. It's been a crazy year and you've given us a lot of love and a lot of laughs 🎂 🥳 🎉 🎈 ❤️
Training is fun for everyone ...
Did you know that the phrase slightly unpredictable, when used in dog training, means totally unresponsive?
No, and neither did I until this weekend.
Recall: Let's help, because this is an area where I feel confident that I can give good advice.
Here's some great tips that will help with a recall, but better still, keep your dog near.
1. Build a solid reflex to name, word or sound. Rehearse it and reinforce it. If you haven't read Steve Mann's books then have a look.
2. Once you have your reflex, have an encouraging recall cue... make it exciting, find that inner 10 year old child. Start with just a few metres, no distractions and have some fun.
3. Stop repeating their name all the time. It is unnecessary to prefix every cue with your dogs name.
4. Those that have trained with me know I like the recall with no recall. The auto check in, the dog making sure that I'm not going anywhere rather than the other way around. That means that YOU, and that little area around you, is where all the fun happens. Play, treats, training and fun. It is a place where there is continuous reinforcement as soon as Mutley steps into it.
And finally...
5. If you haven't got a recall... get a good lead or longline, it's far less stressful, confrontational and, I promise, will make life a lot more enjoyable.
Happy Sunday y'all. By the way it's flippin' freezing out here, dress up warm!

Developing a solid recall, either to a verbal cue or sound, starts on day 1... and maintaining that recall is a daily commitment.
We offer recall training for those that are starting out and those that have lost their way.
(Sidenote: cocker spaniel in this video was rehomed by us at the age of 8 months. He came to us, originally, for recall training)
Placement training
(Also called boundary, mat, area, placeboard and so on). The purpose of the placeboard is to teach our dog that this is where they are supposed to be when nothing else is happening.
It is a targeting exercise and we reinforce this behaviour of going to the placeboard, heavily, so that our dog, associates it with a good place to be and that the behaviour will be repeated. We use the board when asking our dog to perform tasks such as a sit, down, recall etc as well as positioning and direction.
The behaviour of going to an area, like this, is transferable to the outdoors and in the home and once the desired cue for our dog to go on to the placeboard has been established we can use that for mats in the home, logs and mounds in the woods or a convenient and safe place whilst in the pub!
It is the very first behaviour we teach at Allywags and for our non working dogs in class, I liken this to a child having a desk at school.
Gotta keep moving or we'll freeze out here
And, with a BIG thank you to you all, that's me for '23!
What a year!!
Many of you know that I like a proverb!! And here's one that I've been saving! It's an African proverb:
“so wo were fi na wosan kofa a yenki”.
Translated it says “It is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.”
And it's meaning is that it is important to learn from the past to build the future.
Wishing you all love, peace, happiness ...and a very, very, Happy New Year. Cheers ❤️🍾

What a week!! And, Friday came around so quickly.
Whatever your plans for the weekend, have a great one.
We have a relatively quiet one this week, so any film recommendations, for Saturday night viewing, will be greatly received!!
Friendships are the hardest thing to explain.
