🐶 Listen up! Aggression is NOT an all-or-nothing personality trait. It's more like a moody friend who only shows up when specific triggers are pulled. 💥😱

Here's the deal: Even if your furball barks and lunges at other dogs, they won't necessarily go full-on psycho on every doggo they see from a mile away. Nope, there are conditions that need to be met for that aggressive switch to flip. 🐕💣

So let's debunk this myth of "good dogs" and "bad dogs." A pup might give strangers the stink-eye only if they invade their personal bubble or make a fuss. But guess what? That same pup can be an absolute sweetheart with their four-legged buddies. 😍🐾

And hey, have you ever seen your furry friend go ballistic on lead but turn into a social butterfly when off? Yeah, it happens! Some dogs have their boundary lines when it comes to other canines, but they're total social butterflies with hoomans. 🦸‍♂️🐶

Oh, and resource guarding? Totally a thing. But your pooch might go all Hulk-mode only when it comes to their food bowl or prized bone. They won't bat an eye if someone strolls by while they're munching on a different treat or playing with a toy. 🍗🧸

Now, pay attention: Understanding aggression means breaking it down, analysing the context, and decoding those triggers. We need to play detective! 🕵️‍♀️💡

First, pinpoint the specific circumstances that set your pup off. Then, dig deeper and unravel the purpose behind their behaviour. That's how we crack the code and figure out if management is needed or how to shape their behaviour in the future. 📚💪

Look for trainers and behaviourists registered with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council 💯👌 They will have undergone rigorous training, demonstrated their skills, and meet ethical standards. 🙌🤝

Additionally, look for someone who uses humane training methods, treats your pet with kindness, and has a positive relationship with your furry friend. 🐶🐕 Remember, your pet's well-being is paramount! 💖🙏

📚 A review of dog behaviour problem cases found that around one-third involved painful conditions. In some cases, the figure skyrocketed to nearly 80%! 😢 Our pups are silently suffering, and it breaks our hearts.

🚫 Dog bites don't just come out of the blue.

🔍 A study from 2018 (Owczarczak-Garstecka et al, 2018; https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-25671-7 ) spilled the beans: 20 seconds before a bite, people were getting all touchy-feely, standing or leaning over the dog 🖐️😮 And guess what? 🐕 The poor pooches were showing clear signs of discomfort through their body language! 🚨

Let's get one thing straight: dogs aren't always up for some random touchy time, and they definitely don't enjoy being invaded just because you feel like it! 😒 They might not even be down for close contact! And don't you dare think that sharing space with a human means they're okay with being touched or leaned/stood over. 🙅‍♂️

So, whether it's your own 🐶 or a furry friend you encounter, remember to respect their personal space, just like you would with another human being. It's all about consent! ✋✅

Dogs have their good days and bad days, just like the rest of us. Some days they're all about the affection, while other days they just wanna be left alone to chill. 🌟 So, be an awesome pet parent and show some respect by checking for their consent.

In the TWW household, we've got our own little consent-checking routine! We hold our hands loosely at our sides, palms facing our furry friends at about their chest level. If they're up for some love, they'll move toward us like little heart-melting magnets. But if not, we let them be. No pressure, no fuss. ✋💕

And hey, here's the kicker: when we're giving them all the fuss they deserve, we take a quick break every few seconds to see if they're still into it. Flint, our cuddlebug, can't get enough and snuggles in like a champ. Meanwhile, Fraggle prefers shorter fuss sessions, with a little break where she backs away before coming back for more. 🐾💕

Management.
Sometimes I think people believe it's a dirty word in dog training. Like you're cheating if you prevent your dog from doing something in the first place.
Nothing can be further from the truth. Using management to prevent rehearsal of a problem behaviour is an essential part of the training process.

To not use management is knowingly setting your dog up to fail. Because if they could already do what you'd rather they did, they'd be doing it.

Setting them up to rehearse and practise not only makes it much more likely to happen again in the future, but it means you're left with fewer options to change that behaviour.

You can either accidentally reinforce it, because it's happened and now we need to redirect and try to get something we prefer. This often risks a beautiful chain of unwanted behaviours so your dog can access the cues for reinforcement.

Or, you're left with punishing the behaviour to reduce its frequency. And really, who wants to do that when building behaviours is just a better strategy over all?

So my vote will always go to starting with management. And bonus, sometimes it's all you need to do.

If your dog's behaviour is perfectly fine while lounging on the bed or cuddling on the sofa, then honestly, who cares about arbitrary rules? It's your home, your life, and you make the rules that suit you and your furry companion! 🏠✨

💔 But guess what? This lack of control can mess with their mental and physical well-being. It's time we change that and give them some agency, don't you think? 🙌

So, here are some suggestions🌟 to empower our dogs and let them be the boss sometimes. And these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg—your imagination is the limit! 💡

1️⃣ : Next time you're out for a walk, let your pooch take the lead. 🐾 Let them choose the direction, pace, and distance. If they wanna stop and sniff every tree or lamppost, so be it! Give them that freedom to explore. 🌳

2️⃣ : Protect your dog from unwanted social interactions. They should decide when, how close, and with whom they wanna hang out. No forced playdates, please! Being a "good" dog doesn't mean being a social butterfly. 🐾🚫🤝

3️⃣ : Whether it's others or even you, make sure your pup gives their consent for any physical contact. Let's respect their boundaries! 🙏❤️👋

4️⃣ : They should have the option to walk away from training, playtime, or anything else. It's all about choice! Respect their decision to politely decline, and don't take it personally. 🐾🚶‍♂️🚫

5️⃣ : Remember, a "no" from your furry companion should be honored, unless their safety is at stake. By respecting their "no," we foster trust and understanding. 🐾🚫❌

6️⃣ : They have needs and desires too, you know. So when they nudge you and say, "Can I have a bite of your lunch?" or "Can we play tug?"—listen up! Labelling these requests as attention-seeking is a major pet peeve of mine. 🍔🎾🐾

7️⃣ : When you're at home, make sure your pup has plenty of space to roam around. Let 'em stretch those furry legs and explore their kingdom. 🏰🐶

So, let's break the chains, my friends, and give our dogs the agency they deserve! 🙌💪 Get creative, think outside the doghouse, and let's make our pups the masters of their own lives! 🐾✨❤️

2️⃣ Set up your environment for success, my friend! Arrange things so your pup is more likely to nail those desired behaviours. Use prompts, post-its, and have treat pots at the ready everywhere you go! 🐾🚀

3️⃣ Pick one thing each morning and make it your training mission of the day! Observe when that behaviour occurs naturally, reinforce it like a champ, and find ways to make it happen more often. Remember, you can change it up later, so start with just one focus and watch your progress soar! 📈👏

🐾💔 Not all dogs are pub-friendly, and that's okay. Not every pup enjoys the dog park either, and that's fine. Fast sports might not be their thing, and that's alright too. 🤷‍♀️🐶

They don't have to enjoy what you like, what your neighbour's dog likes, or even what your previous furry buddy enjoyed. 🙌💡 Just figure out what makes your dog's tail wag and focus on that! 🎉🐕
