🚨 PET THEFT AWARENESS DAY 🚨

Keep your furry family members safe! Dog theft is unfortunately on the rise, but there are simple steps you can take to protect your best friend:

✅ Never leave your dog unattended outside shops
✅ Secure your garden with proper fencing and gates
✅ Ensure your dog is microchipped with up-to-date details
✅ Consider a GPS tracking collar for added peace of mind

I’m lucky to work in an industry that is predominantly female-led (at least here in the UK), which means I’ve had the absolute honour of learning from, working with, and sharing space with some truly inspiring women. 💪🐾

What blows my mind is that some of these brilliant women still question their own abilities, knowledge, and impact. Imposter syndrome is a sneaky little gremlin that makes you feel like you’re never good enough—but you know what? It also keeps us questioning, learning, and growing. And that growth makes us better, more adaptable, and ultimately more effective at what we do.

Honestly? I’d rather wrestle with a bit of imposter syndrome than be the kind of clueless loudmouth who thinks they know it all, spreads misinformation, and does more harm than good.

So, to my fellow trainers, behaviourists, and dog guardians—if you ever feel that self-doubt creeping in, remember this: The fact that you care *so much* is exactly what makes you good at what you do. Keep learning, keep questioning, and keep making a difference. 💙🐶

As we ring in the New Year with celebrations and fireworks, let’s not forget our canine companions who might find the noise a little too much. 🐶✨

In the realm of pet care, it never ceases to amaze me that there are still individuals who believe offering support and comfort to a frightened dog 🐕 can somehow intensify their fear. This belief is, in all honesty, nothing short of nonsensical. Disregarding your dog's distress when they're clearly anxious is, quite frankly, just cruel. 😞💔

Now, I'm not advocating for going overboard and behaving in an overly worried way, but rather, for a measured and compassionate approach. Sit calmly with your frightened dog 🐾, gently stroking them 👐, and speaking to them in a soft, slow, reassuring tone. 🥰 The truth is, these actions won't exacerbate their unease; instead, they can provide solace and a sense of security. ❤️‍🩹

The root of this misconception seems to be the idea that, by not reacting in any way, your dog will miraculously comprehend that there's nothing to fear. When you actually think about that, it's a tad absurd, isn't it? 🤔

To put it in human terms, consider someone with a fear of flying ✈️ on a plane full of passengers who are completely at ease with the experience. It's unlikely that this scenario would prompt the fearful passenger to suddenly think, "Well, there's obviously nothing to be worried about; I'll just stop being frightened." 😅

So, if you're a dog owner with a pup who finds the sound of fireworks distressing 💥🎆, have a look through these practical tips to help them through these challenging moments. Remember, your presence and understanding can make all the difference for your four-legged friend. 🐾💕🐶

🐾 𝗧𝗶𝗽 #𝟲: Keep an eye out for stress signals! 🕵️‍♂️ How skilled are you at deciphering your dog's body language? 🐶 Not sure? Explore the Dogdecoder App to learn more about your dog's body language and whether you really do understand what they're telling you.
🚨 Signs of discomfort may include panting when it's not hot, tongue flicking, head turns, stress yawns, ears back, paw lifts, and a tucked tail, among others. If you notice these signs, your dog likely needs a break from the festivities. 🎉 A quick walk or some time sniffing in the garden can work wonders.
🤔 Reflect on potential stress triggers. Was it the loud TV, noisy toys, music, or boisterous conversations causing unease? Consider toning it down or creating a quiet space (see tip #2) for your dog to retreat from the hustle and bustle. 🤫🌿

🐾 𝗧𝗶𝗽 #𝟱:: With people bustling in and out, armed with overnight bags and laden with gifts, there's a risk of your dog making a great escape. 🏡 Be vigilant and take precautions, especially if your dog isn't familiar with all the guests.
⚠️ Traditional "airlock" systems, like keeping the vestibule door closed until the front door is shut and ensuring the front door isn't opened until the vestibule door is closed with the dog safely inside, might not be foolproof if others aren't familiar with the rules. 🚪🐕 In such cases, consider using baby gates to contain your dog further inside until everyone is safely indoors. 🚧

🐾 𝗧𝗶𝗽 #𝟰: Not all dogs are comfortable with strangers. 🚫 If you're expecting guests, ensure they're aware of your dog's sociability and provide guidance on safe interactions. 🗣️ Baby gates can be handy to keep everyone at ease. 🚧 Remember, children should always be supervised around dogs. 🧒🐕 It's crucial that children understand not to chase, poke, climb on, hang on, or scream at dogs—anytime. 🙅‍♂️ This is not only unfair to the dog but could lead to bites or injuries. Stay safe and considerate! 🐾

𝗧𝗶𝗽 #𝟯: - Many foods can be harmful to dogs and not all dog owners are aware of this. Don't be tempted to kill your dog with kindness. Chocolate, Artificial Sweeteners (sometimes called Xylatol or Birch Sugar), Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies (anything with raisins in it), Onions, and Macadamia Nuts are all toxic for dogs. Cooked bones are also dangerous for dogs. The cooking process makes bones brittle meaning they can easily splinter and cause serious internal injury.
You may hear stories of dogs eating a whole bar of chocolate or a Christmas pudding and apparently being none the worse for it. Concerning grapes and raisins, this differs from dog to dog and it's really better not to risk finding out if your dog is particularly sensitive to these. As for the chocolate, the level of danger will vary and depend on the size of the dog, the quantity consumed and % of coco solids. Again it's safer just to keep the chocolate out of reach never find out.

🏠 𝗧𝗶𝗽 #𝟮: - If your dog doesn't already have one, set up a quiet, comfortable space where your dog can retreat if things get too hectic. A crate with a comfy bed inside and a blanket thrown over to cover the top and three sides, can make the perfect den for your dog. Make sure it's out of any high foot traffic areas and that everyone understands that the dog is to be left in peace when they are in their safe space.

Not only does it make them feel secure, but it also avoids potential mischief due to frustration from missed walks. If the usual walk time isn't feasible, consider an earlier stroll. A well-exercised dog is less likely to cause havoc! And hey, a well-fed one is less likely to give you those puppy-dog eyes at the dinner tabl
