There’s something quite mesmerising about watching a stick insect eat 🌿
This adult Vietnamese stick insect (Ramulus artemis) is around 20cm long with her legs included which is a whole lot of stick! Captive bred individuals are all female and it’s not fully known if any males even exist naturally in the wild. Females have no trouble reproducing though, and do so by flicking eggs from the end of their abdomen which they like to do each time I spray their enclosure, often flicking them into my eyes 🙃
This species is extremely easy and rewarding to keep and has a global distribution in captivity, mainly due to it being a prime candidate for genetics research and other studies (like many other stick insects).
In fact one compelling study found that flightless stick insects may rely on being predated by birds to distribute their eggs. The eggs are coated in a hard shell resembling seeds and can withstand very acidic conditions, like those inside a stomach! So the birds eat the stick insect, fly around and poop out the indigested seeds inside the stick insect with around 20% being unharmed. Some eggs from Ramulus irregulariterdentatus even hatched, so there could be a chance R. artemis can use this strategy too!
