This was our busiest Christmas period yet! All of our live orders and enclosure orders guaranteed for Christmas arrival were sent off this week, including another bunch I couldn’t fit into this pic.

We’re now on our much needed Christmas break and travelling to see family, so here’s some service updates:

We hope you all managed to stay safe during the storm over the weekend, especially our fellow South-Westerners and Welsh customers!

These mushrooms popped up over the past week in one of our dwarf white isopod colonies 🍄
Absolutely love seeing mushrooms make an appearance, and I think the isopods do too. They’ve already started snacking (and pooping) on them!

Happy 1st Birthday to this little fella 🥳

A year old is quite the milestone for male leaf insects, as they usually only live on average for 6 months!

Hopefully he has a few more months of life left in him 🤞

“Davus pentaloris are pretty chill dwarf tarantulas. They’re not overly aggressive with prey”

Not this one.

This is about as good as a pic gets of Jinx 😅
She has some savage takedowns at feeding time and likes to make me jump occasionally, but boy do I love her!

If you’re wondering what tarantula to get next, make it a Davus pentaloris 🧡

Our Pachnoda fissipunctum colony has been showing some interesting phenotypic variation recently 🪲

You can see the older beetle on the left is missing the distinct skull-like dorsal pattern, but newer adults like the one on the right still express the common pattern for this species.

There’s quite a few other beetles like Harlequin ladybirds and Bean Leaf beetles that show phenotypic variation, but we don’t know for sure whether it’s genetics, environment or other factors that control it within beetles.

I’ll be keeping an eye on other new adults to see if this variant pops up again!

Lifted up some leaf litter to check on the Rubber Ducky isopods, only to catch this one with its pants down… literally!

Isopods use biphasic moulting, which means in two halves or phases instead of all at once like millipedes, cockroaches etc

This seems to be a great strategy at reducing predation and conserving body moisture during the riskiest time for any invert. Parasitic isopods also use this process to stay attached to their host during a moult. Clever ay! 🤓
