Some of the family of movement pioneers on whose shoulders we stand. Big love Doris.

José Limón’s mentor and artistic partner Doris Humphrey was born on this day in 1895. She would have been 120 today!

Some great focus on the monkey beam balance work in last nights class. Keep it up folks. Try and find some environmental balance challenges in your day today and hold on to that limb/trunk integration reflex 👍

A little bit of our 'Monkey Jump' groundwork training today with my good friend Danny MacMillan from MacMillan Martial Arts Academy. The idea is to reproduce the patterns associated with moving at speed through the low jungle brush. Crawling, rolling, hopping, jumping, leaping patterns Etc, from the SMS training, are a great foundation but the ability to improvise and think quick is also necessary. It's great for total body CV fitness, try it as an interval session - 20/20 for 4 sets each, alternating with a partner.

Just in case your wondering how good your core control needs to be to become world champ - here's Ben Proud to demonstrate. Legend.

25/07/2017

For about 3 years, day in, day out, we grafted in the gym, always pushing hard. Blood, sweat and protein shakes. Ups and downs. But always focused and 100% driven to succeed.
I never had a moments doubt this guy would one day be world champ.
Yesterday was that day.
It was an honour to work with you mate.
World champ - BOOM 💪🏅

It's all in the balance. SuperMonkey primative movement training encourages the body to re-connect with authentic balance strategies. By bringing the focus into developing our awareness of how we move and balance we can begin to influence its efficiency and remove unwanted tension. This allows the natural ease and flow to happen, which releases flexibility and mobility, reducing habitual pain-forming pattern repetition. Breath is a key element also.

This what we mean in SuperMonkey training when we talk about 'reflex' core strength. It's definitely not 'crunches'. Real core strength is a reflex trunk stabilisation to perturbation or applied instability and it has a rapid response. The more you train it, the better it is for running, climbing, well.... all movement really!! Practise by standing on one leg, moving on a ball or on beams n branches. Let your monkey balance out.

These babies in Iceland can stand unaided at just 3.5 months!

That's thanks to Snorri Magnusson, whose teaching methods have earned him the nickname "baby whisperer".

As dancers, we learn that when it comes to stretching, your playing the long game. A little every day, for years n years n years, brings huge results. Don't expect rapid changes. Make stretching a daily habit. Just like our SuperMonkey training - results take time, commitment and practice. Start today in making the body you want to have 5 years from now. It's an investment in YOU. 👍

See how nicely Batuhan is using his upper body these days. After only a short while training here he is reaching without 'scrunching up' his shoulders and over firing upper traps, which would cause limited shoulder mobility. His scapular stability with dynamic movement has also improved enormously and this has been largely due to his SuperMonkeySystem Canopy work. The result = no more shoulder pain with swimming and new pb's.
Hanging and swinging is very good for shoulders - so do some!

SuperMonkeys flow.
Moving well isn't about throwing a shape, then the next, and the next, like some human version of a flicker book just creating a clunky illusion of smooth motion.

Moving well is about embracing a level of physical integration which if done correctly, creates a seamless flow from one state to the next. There are no edges, there is no beginning or end.

Movement should flow with a graceful ease, like a river running downhill towards the sea. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow but always with a sense of release and fluid dynamic which attest to its efficiency and true control.

Instinctively, when we see this in an athlete, dancer or wild animal, we marvel at the skill and ability required to achieve this level of excellence. Most people assume this is beyond their reach and settle for the aches, pains and restrictions that wearing a sociological suit of armour creates.

But imagine if you could re-learn to move, in small ways at first, and re-capture some of that natural ease and begin to move through your daily life with more ease, control and efficiency.

At SMS, we believe that a body that moves well, lives well and lasts a lifetime.
Which is why we place a great emphasis on coaching you and supporting you through a unique process of re-connecting with your body and unlocking your natural animal efficiency.

SuperMonkeySystem training is great for swimmers. It works all the main limb/trunk integration patterns and builds a solid foundation for use in the pool and weights room.

The Swiss boys have been working hard in this heat to get in top shape for the summer swim comps.
Good luck to Ivo and Thomas 💪

Or, accept your limitations, and they will be.

In our SuperMonkey System we train functional movements that the body was designed to do. Crawling, hanging, inversion and ground locomotion all play an important part. Come check us out.

The time of xmas feasting excess is over and now ''tis the season" to perhaps be considering the -

SMS Ancestral Diet Rules;

The point of the SuperMonkey Ancestral diet method is to return to the basis of a dietary regime which was our normal for well over 1.8 million years. We are born to be essentially opportunistic vegetable based foragers with an occasionally successful meat kill.

Seasonal abundance and regional availability meant we didn't eat heavy all the time, often light, sometimes not at all and we put a lot of effort into simply working to find enough to eat to survive and thrive. Often covering a lot of ground. We knew our territory and lived connected to its seasons and rhythms.
Your ancestors were good at it or you wouldn't be here.

Guess what, you also, are adapted to live this way and thrive on it.

The Daily Basics.
No refined Sugars. (e.g. Sugar, Honey, Orange juice, Sweets, Coke etc)
No refined carbs (e.g. Bread, Pasta, Cakes, Cereals, White rice etc).
No fruit smoothies.
Eat as much chicken, fish, eggs and vegetables as you like.
Plenty of nuts, seeds and berries.
A little fruit.
Eat something you have grown or foraged every day.
Eat only 1 main meal.

Occasionally (e.g. Once a month).
A feast day - Pasta or rice dish. Red meat dish. Some cheese. Some honey.
A fast day - A day when you don't eat, just drink.

Remember - it's good and natural to feel very hungry at times and not always eat. It's good for our insulin levels and we produce ketones to help us think clearly. Our ancestors had no choice, but we do and we need to exercise intelligent control of our modern lifestyle and embrace this mild discomfort.
Our bodies soon re-adjust, the discomfort fades, we settle at a natural weight and feel healthier.

Three square meals is a myth.

(NB: each of the above rules is dealt with in detail in our full info document. Robust scientific research evidence and rationale is referenced. This is just the bullets. Also, this is for average joe. The elite athletes version is a little different. The best hunters were also the best warriors, with increased energy demands, they got a special diet).

Think you can do it?

Do, or do not. There is no try.

Great morning for some tree work. To get into this old beech it's a jump, grab and leg over twist. Great to practice it a few times for a good upper pump and then up into the canopy. Go on, get outside and climb a tree today and reboot your monkey strength.
