Good morning all!

At the end of the month I am taking leave to go on my winter break before the Christmas rush! If you’re looking for a Xmas groom, I would recommend contacting me before I go as I will not have internet or great signal much whilst I’m away. Slots are filling up fast! 🎅🏻

Why did I become a dog groomer?

It all started during the pandemic, when I was working in admin but knew it wasn't the career for me. Like most people, I spent hours endlessly doom scrolling through social media to pass the time, and this is when inspiration struck.

Videos of professional dog groomers doing their thing kept popping up, and something about them lit a spark in me. I was immediately taken and had a love for dogs, so the idea of working with them was really a dream - is there anything better?!

However I had spent my life behind desks and never imagined I would learn a trade and work with my hands - it seemed so unlike me! When the lockdowns began to lift though I decided to sign up to the course at Duchy college and give it a try, and if I didn't like it? No harm done!

Despite venturing into something completely new to me, I quickly fell in love and decided this was my calling. I worked as hard as possible alongside my admin job to complete my level 2 and 3 so I could go out and groom. I learnt grooming was about so much more than just looks and that in this day and age where dogs work less and are treasured more like children, grooming was essential to maintain them and help them be their most comfortable and happy.

Wanting to ensure I had work upon completing my college course, I began work toward securing my own premises and opening my own business, and in July 2023 Buzz & Oreo's Dog Grooming Salon was born.

I couldn't have done it without my wonderful friends and tutor Nicky, and I'm the luckiest girl in the world to do what I do now! Here's a picture of me at college with a particularly silly dog who just loved to lie on her back 🐶

Not every groom is about style and looks - some are about health and comfort

This is Nelson. Nelson was in need of a groom so he was bathed and dried but unfortunately struggled with the styling element. Becoming stressed and aggravated, I made the decision to stop the groom and instead rescheduled for a time when Nelson’s dad could join me to provide comfort for Nelson and see if that approach would help.

Upon Nelson’s return we discovered he’s ok with the clippers but has a real problem with scissors! Now that we had sussed out Nelson’s issue I changed my approach to the groom and Nelson’s mum and dad can work on his dislike of scissors at home.

His groom was far from perfect, but any matting he had was removed so he is far more comfortable and now we can see his beautiful face 🐶

Humanity over vanity always. Dog grooming is not just about looks but also comfort, and having a regular schedule means your groomer gets to know your dog and can spot any irregularities, as well as prevent the build up of severe matting.

Being 1-2-1 means I also have the opportunity to invite pet parents to stay if need be and have more flexibility to adapt the groom to the dog’s needs.

I look forward to watching Nelson grow and adapt to grooming over the years!
