π¨ Plymouth dog friends! π¨
Important info from a friend
Please be aware that Parvo virus is doing the rounds of Plymouth. This virus is highly contagious and is most likely to be fatal.
Please ensure you dog is up to date with their vaccinations.
Dogs Most at risk β are unvaccinated dogs and dogs up to the age of 6 months, also dogs with a weakened immune system.
Whilst vaccinated dogs are protected from parvo, there are some cases of vaccinated dogs still catching parvo.
The virus is shed in the faeces, so therefore the Transmission is from contact with the faeces. The worrying factor is they can have the virus but not show symptoms for two weeks prior to symptoms developing. The virus can stay on the ground (or on surfaces in the home) for at least two years if not longer (depending on environmental factors).
Disinfect your vehicle!
If you do come into contact with the virus then you need to use appropriate cleaning methods. Whilst bleach can work it needs to maintain contact for 10 minutes. Better disinfectants that are used by Veterinary surgeons and are specifically to kill parvo are Virkon and Formula H. Virkon can be bought in sachets which is then diluted in water. (I believe this can be bought locally from Serpells).
Please adopt very stringent hygiene as you are contaminated, disinfect your coats, shoes/boots, clothes and ALL of your car.
It is important to be aware of the symptoms:-
Signs of parvo will start with lethargy quickly followed by decreased appettite, vomiting and diarrhoea. The diarrhoea will have blood and mucus in it, its consistency will be like tar, it will have a foul odour β worse than you have ever experienced before (this is not your average smelling diarrhoea by any manner of means).
As a result of the vomting and diarrhoea, they will be in pain, they will become dehydrated and they will have a fever.
As soon as you suspect parvo phone the vets immediately for an appointment. Do not delay. Do not wait toβsee how they get onβ Tell the vets your suspicions whilst you are on the phone, wait in the car for you to be called in as they can isolate your visit whilst they undertake the care of the dog. (so as to protect other clients).
I cannot stress enough how very contagious this virus is. Please be proactive and behave responsibly if you suspect parvo.
If in doubt speak to your vet. Please be vigilant.
