The practice was originally established as a single-handed small animal enterprise which was purchased by the founding partner John Bower in 1969 and operated from premises in North Hill, Plymouth. Philip Hunt joined in 1971 and became a partner in 1976. Further expansion saw David Youngs join in 1980, and this growth led to the decision to move the focus of the practice to purpose-built premises in Estover. The building and veterinary services satisfied exacting RCVS standards and became established as The Veterinary Hospital. David joined John and Phil in partnership in 1983 and all contributed their skills to ensure continued development of the business. Adam Coulson joined in 1986, and Stephen O’Shea in 1987; both became full partners in 1993. Adam played a vital role in developing the newly purchased branch in Plymstock. Also in 1993, Caroline Bower joined the veterinary team and oversaw the development of the now thriving Plympton branch of the practice. Caroline became a partner in 2001. Trading as The Veterinary Hospital Group, the practice has endeavored to offer a broad range of veterinary services for companion animals. We have encouraged veterinary surgeons to develop their skills in specific clinical areas, and the ability to offer this expertise has been a key factor in helping to establish the reputation which the practice is proud to hold. The emphasis however, in addition to these special interests, continues to be the provision of a high standard of companion animal care across all areas of general practice. The practice currently operates from five premises; the Hospital remains the focus of the Group, in Estover, with smaller Veterinary Centres established in Plymstock, Plympton, Lipson and St Budeaux. The group changed names to Plymouth Veterinary Group within the last couple of years.
We continue to offer specialist services such as Orthopedic Referrals via South West Surgical Referrals and Cardiology via Heart Vets.
Veterinary Nursing Services
A number of veterinary nursing services are available within Plymouth Vetrinary Group. The veterinary nurses (RVNs) providing these services are all fully qualified and listed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Additionally, our veterinary nurses have also undertaken different forms of post-qualification study in order to further develop their interest and expertise.
