I’ve heard time and time again that if a dog is struggling with other dogs 🐕, people 👣, moving vehicles 🚗, or anything else, you just need to keep exposing them.

🚨 Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. 🚨

If you do that, you risk increasing their reaction 😬

Instead, we need to help them work through their emotions ❤️‍🩹, which will then change their response. Dogs need support to build their confidence 💪 and skills before they’re put in situations they find overwhelming.

So, how do we do that?

✨ Manage exposure: Keep your dog at a distance where they feel safe.
🍖 Build positive associations: Help them link the trigger with good things like treats or play.
⏳ Allow recovery time: Give their stress levels time to return to normal between exposures.
🐾 Teach alternative behaviors: Provide your dog with tools, like looking at you or walking away, to help them cope.

❗ And just a quick note:

Sometimes, it might seem like constant exposure has “fixed” the problem, but that’s not really the case. When dogs stop reacting, they may have reached a state of learned helplessness—where they’ve given up because they feel there’s no way to escape or change the situation 😔. This can seriously impact their mental health and raise their overall stress levels. Alternatively, they may become so overwhelmed that they freeze ❄️. Neither is a true solution and can lead to long-term stress and behaviour challenges.

Happy Pets Doggy Day Care has been offering first-class professional doggy day care & puppy care in our purpose built fun and safe centre since 2013. There is also an on-site dog store providing the very best natural dog treats, foods, toys and accessories. Additional services include a dog taxi service to and from day care, please speak to us for a quote as this will depend on your area. You will also find our popular and highly recommended professional dog grooming salon on-site, for all your dog grooming needs.

Half Day (5 hours or less) £15

We are open at 7.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
