Polite reminder:

We endeavour to see all of your Pets at the time in which their appointment is booked for.

Unfortunately, as is expected in any health care setting, there are times where our Vets have to spend that extra time with a Pet and this can cause them to run behind with appointments and cause a wait.

This can be due to the Pet being very anxious and needing time to be examined or treated. The Pet being very unwell and the Vet needs more time to stabilise them before they're admitted for ongoing care. Sometimes, sadly the Pet is very poorly and it comes to 'that time' and we need to allow their family time with their Pet for their final goodbyes. There are many more reasons why this may be.

You are welcome to reschedule your appointment if you are unable to wait or wait outside or in your car if this is more comfortable for you and your Pet.

We are aware that waiting can be difficult for some Pets and frustrating for some Owners. We do ask that you are patient and polite with our members of staff during this time as they will also be feeling the pressure of trying to look after very poorly animals and worrying about running behind

Happy Halloween from all at Elm!🎃👻🍭

We hope everyone has a fun and safe evening!

Remember not all Pets can find this evening as fun as us. Unexpected knocks on the door, costumes, masks, loud noises etc can spook some Pets.

If your Pet can be a bit anxious and may struggle with these changes this evening, try some of these simple steps to help ease this for them:

🎃Create a quiet safe space for them to snuggle down in

👻Pop calming plug ins such as pet remedy, feliway etc on

🧛‍♂️Ensure they are in an enclosed space when answering the door to trick or treaters

🕷️Consider putting a sign on the door to remind trick or treaters to be mindful

Today we had to say a really difficult and sad farewell to our amazing Vet, Hannah, who is leaving Elm.

Hannah has been with us since 2016 and is a much loved member of our team. She has nurtured many of our new grad or 'new to the Practice' vets over the year. Hannah has a wealth of knowledge, kindness and support for our clients and all our staff, which we're sure her new team will appreciate and love as much as we do.

We wish her all the best in her new venture and hope she knows she is always welcome for cake and cuddles with her lovely pup Aggie or kitty Bernard when he's not terrorising her neighbourhood! 🐶🐱👩‍⚕️💚

We've sadly had a deceased cat handed into the Milehouse Practice today. Found on Di**le Road. All black, entire male. No collar but is microchipped.

We have contacted the microchip company for details, unfortunately, the description and age details sent over by the company doesn't completely match the Cat. We've contacted the microchip company about this and they have advised they've had some cases where the chip number inputted doesn't match the animal it's been inserted to.

Please contact us on 01752 567567 or send an email to [email protected], if you think this could be your Cat.

Unfortunately, we're not able to man this page as often as we'd like to, to answer all comments

We've been missing two of our amazing Vets, Cristina and Fernando from the Practice this week and will be missing them next week, as they're currently volunteering at the Carriacou Animal Hospital.

They are helping to treat and care for the animals in Carriacou who have been effected by Hurricane Beryl.

We are all extremely proud of them, for their continuous hard work and dedication to caring for the animals that visit our Practices and for helping these animals in need. We look forward to hearing all about it when they return! 😊

We've noticed our phone lines are extremely busy at the moment and there is quite a lot of demand for appointments. We just wanted to remind everyone that we've made certain things simpler and this may save you waiting to get through to one of our Receptionist in non urgent cases.

Ordering medication - including flea and worming treatments can be done by calling our number and selecting option 2. This allows you to leave a voice message to request the treatment you need for your Pet. There is up to a 24 hour wait for the treatment, the same as if you was to request this in the Practice or over the phone with the Receptionists, to allow time for the Nurses to review the request, the Vets to authorise the treatment and ensure stock is available.

Alternatively, you can order treatments via our website -
https://www.elmvetsplymouth.co.uk/services/repeat-prescriptions

You should receive notification of when your treatments will be ready to collect or if the treatment needs to be ordered in.

Non urgent medical appointments and routine appointments can also be made online via our website -
https://www.elmvetsplymouth.co.uk/book-an-appointment

If you receive text or email reminders for routine appointments, such as health checks and vaccinations or when parasite treatments are due, a link will be included so you can order/book from this.

PLEASE NOTE- when booking an online appointment, an appointment with a Nurse is for a routine nail clips, routine a**l gland expressions or a routine health check as part of the Pet Health Club only. Our Nurses are unable to diagnose, advise on medical conditions or administer booster vaccinations. Therefore, if your Pet has a long term health condition, is on long term medications, due a vaccination or is over 8 years old, this would need to be booked with a Vet.

We ask during this busy time for patience with all of our staff, as they continuously work hard and are dedicated to caring for all the Pets we see and care for.

Book vet appointments 24/7 at Elm Veterinary Group. We offer routine and specialized pet care services in Plymouth.

Lets talk about.......... FLEAS😳

We're sure just reading that makes your skin start to feel a bit itchy!

We're getting lots of calls lately for advice on fleas and many pets who have never had them before have now got these unwanted visitors.

Did you know if can take up to 12 weeks, sometimes longer, for an infestation to be eliminated?

This is due to the flea life cycle in which the flea egg takes time to develop and hatch into larvae then develop to pupea and then onto an adult flea.

To help prevent or end an infestation sooner here are some tips:

1. Treat all of your Pets regularly 💊

Even if your Cat is indoors or your Dog doesn't interact with many other dogs, they can still get fleas - did you know, we can carry them into our homes on our clothes?

If one Pet is treated and the other isn't, unfortunately the infestation is just going to keep going, all Pets that are in the household will need to be treated, with treatment licensed for their species and a dose suitable for their weight, to help lead to the end of the infestation.

If your Pet is up to date with their treatments and you notice a flea or two on them - don't panic. Fleas can still hitchhike on our Pets despite them being treated, but as soon as they bite and ingest the treatment they will start to die off. You may notice the fleas are a bit slower than usual - this can mean they're dying.

Please note all treatments the Practice dispenses is prescription only and your Pet may need to be seen by a Vet in order to have treatment dispensed.

2. Treat the home 🏠

Use household sprays such as RIP fleas or indorex on furnishings around the home. Please be aware these sprays can be unsettling on the respiratory system so keep Pets and humans out of the room that is being treated for an hour or two, then ventilate the room and hoover.

If there is a heavy infestation it may be worth using an exterminator service.

3. 'Household chores' 🧹

Hoovering a couple of times a day or week and emptying the contents of the hoover each time can help reduce infestations as the vibrations from the hoover will encourage the eggs to hatch sooner.

Washing linens and fabrics at high heats can also help reduce infestations

4. Grooming 💆‍♀️

Grooming your Pet regularly with a flea comb will help to remove flea dirt, eggs and some fleas

-- If your Pet is really struggling with an infestation and their skin is very red and sore, they could be suffering with something called Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) and may need to see the Vet for medication to help relieve this --

❗️POLITE REMINDERS❗️

Our St.Budeaux branch will be closed this Thursday the 11th of July whilst essential work is being done.

Our Plymstock branch will be closed this Friday the 12th of July whilst we have a new window fitted.

These closures will mean that you’ll be unable to collect any treatments from those Practices on these days, please be aware of this if you will need your Pets treatment for the weekend.

The phones for both Practices will be diverted to our Milehouse branch during these periods.

We thank you for your patience during this time.
