Breeding season is now upon us!
Hobs are now in rut, smelly, greasy, dribbling urine, becoming aggressive towards other boys, even humans sometimes and constantly pestering the Jill’s.
The Jills are also coming into season. Many have been early this year.
The first sign is slight vulva swelling. They become hormonal, often making a nest or even fur pulling. The vulvar will eventually swell to a considerable size and she will be receptive to mating.
The issue this year again is the Jill Jab is no longer available due to the company stopping production.
With that in mind it’s even more important to get them spayed or implanted.
Provided they are over 6m of age ideally older THIS DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADRENAL!
This link is from America (and a few other studies) where they are done at a very young age. There are also many other factors with adrenal which I could write a book on. I’ve had 100s done here and the amount developing adrenal negligible usually at an older age.
Jill’s are 'induced ovulators'. This means they need to mate/have an implant to stimulate the ovaries to release eggs. If the jill does not ovulate, she'll continue to produce oestrogen (she'll stay in season until mated or artificially taken out of season).
But, remaining in season can cause severe health problems for a jill. It can cause alopecia (hair loss), weight loss and even death from oestrogen-associated anaemia (deficiency in red blood cells) and bone marrow suppression due to the oestrogen levels.
It’s something I’ve personally dealt with as a rescue.
If your Jill is left in season for a prolonged period you can run into health issues.
Essentially they can become anemic and can eventually die if left.
In the wild polecats and other relatives would have a male near by already waiting in the wings.
Some jills will often come into season twice a year.
The hormone implant will take them out of season but use it at the first sign.
It can take up to 6 weeks to work.
Some vets are
Pan, the recent stray is settling well. Think he wants to be Peter Pan!!! He’s a real sweet well handled boy. Looks to be no older than a year. Will be paired up with Fester shortly as both lovely sweet natured young boys. They’ll make quite the pair!!
Meet some of my flying squirrels!
Happy autumn! No ferrets or dogs were harmed in the making of this video. Vince is very used to ferrets growing up with them. Id not recommend this without a very trained and trusted dog. Charlie has been a resident some time and even being an older girl has her moments. She goes back to her house for treats and comes when called. Again not all ferrets can be trusted to be free roam without a secure enclosed garden.
I had to share this as made me laugh so much. Reggie and Woodhouse out on a walk discover a dead mole 🙈. Their slave Sarah captured this hilarious walk. Clearly pleased with themselves deciding to take their amazing find home with them. Teamwork! 🤣
Anima is looking for his forever home. Only a year old. Very well handled including children in his foster home. Cheeky playful chap.
He’s also been fine with thier dog. Lovely sweet natured boy neutered with a full bill of health.
Mojo is looking for his forever home and lap. He’s neutered and ready to go. He’s got on well with other ferrets. He’s only about 1 year old. Very well handled and would make a perfect first time ferret. Could be paired up with another here such as Anima who again would be a great first time ferret. Or he would make a wonderful addition to your furry family.
He loves to play, loved his cuddles and fuss too. Such a sweet boy.
This little lad is doing so well. Adult canines now coming through well.
Loving his meat, can see he’s a feisty chap with it. Now weighing in at 384g from 275g.
Gabriel is being a fantastic foster mum still.
Although driving me batty ripping up newspaper constantly. Including soiled!!
Sky (the albino) who came in last year with her litter dotes on him too. Although she’s fed up with Gabriel treating her like another kit dragging her to bed. My hand gets the same treatment 🤣🙈.
Fingers crossed for Sky next week with a meet and greet potential home. She’s been here too long and is such a lovely sweet and playful girl.
Welcome to the house of fun! Madness! No pun intended 🤣. Think they are loving the revamped big house.
So the big ferret house is just about done.
I’ve moved them back in as work stopped due to me being poorly with Covid. I’ve tried to do this the last three years but never been able to keep enough space around the back to move the group.
Put money aside to do it then ended up being swallowed on other things, ended up with a massive group of rescues and kits in, one thing or another.
These are permanent residents. My own, mixed with ones that have not been able to be homed due to age, health, or being very bitey little s@it weasels! Yes Oscar I’m naming you here!
This is where the rescues move too when they are done with quarantine and ready to home.
Although not all can move in with the group at times.
I stopped work on the new run to do this. Finally having a bit of room and the weather. Been a massive undertaking cleaning, painting, rebuilding the pen in there. Evicting 16yr old woodworm!!
The ferrets have to be locked up at clean out (they do not help me no matter what they say!). So the run is ideal with the removable front. Much to poppies disgust. Her canines testify to this!
I want to say a MASSIVE thank you to Courteney Wharmby and Nicole Clarke
who are such amazing kind hearted souls. The second year in a row boarding Courteneys gorgeous babies and Nicole’s nephews and nieces, the donation they left the rescue just blew me away and I was loat for words.
So I finally had a chance to get this done.
Plus enough to comfortably finish the new run. Words will never be enough ladies. We all say thank you so very much.
More to do once I’m better. ###🥰
Edit to say the meat blood trails will be sooooo much easier to clean 🤣
Diesel the dingbat taking a quick break!🤣
