Fingers crossed this is a localised outbreak but keep alert
We would like to advise that there are some suspected cases of Avian Influenza in West Cornwall.
Please be aware that in order to protect our current patients we will only be taking seabirds referred by a veterinary surgeon that require rehabilitation.
Should any bird be showing any signs of Avian Influenza we will not be able to take it in. We recommend if handling sick birds (preferably not, but we understand the desire to help) please wear gloves or wash hands thoroughly afterwards, and if living with or visiting vulnerable people please change your clothing first before coming into too much contact with them. Your local vet is obliged to offer first aid (which does include euthanasia for welfare reasons) free of charge for all wildlife.
For those of you who have supported us for a while you'll be aware of the devasting blow to the hospital in 2022 when Avian Influenza was diagnosed within the hospital and we lost all our birds. We NEVER want to have to go through this again so forgive us if we are unable to help a sick bird that you find. We can still give advice over the phone, via social media or email.
Once The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has provided more details we will update you.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. π
