Swimming is a wonderful way of providing safe exercise for your dog. SAFE being the most important detail and one we take very seriously.
All our sessions whether they be therapy or fun and fitness are provided by a qualified hydrotherapist who will accompany your dog in the pool.
đšī¸ Water Intoxication
This is when a dog swallows an excessive amount of water causing a potentially life threatening electrolyte imbalance in the body.
This may happen due to repeated retrieval of a toy from or under the waterline or diving into the water.
We avoid waterline retrievals and support every dog to make sure they keep their head above water. Buoyancy aids are provided if necessary.
đšī¸ Inhalation Pneumonia/secondary drowning.
Caused by water entering the airway and eventually sitting in the lungs causing inflammation, potential infection and difficulty breathing. Symptoms of secondary drowning may not become apparent until 2 to 3 days after the swim.
đšī¸ Complications caused by pre exisiting medical conditions or injury.
We ALWAYS obtain a veterinary referral and clinical notes for every dog we see.
Swimming may be contraindicated in some cases but often specific care needs to be taken to safely manage any existing problems to ensure a safe and beneficial session in the pool.
đšī¸ Fatigue
It is very easy for a dog to overdo it in the water. Senior dogs and those recovering from surgery, illness or injury need very controlled sessions to build up their fitness and tolerance to exercise while allowing tissues to heal.
We are always happy to discuss our procedures so please don't hesitate to get in touch.
