Weโ€™re very quick to recognise an **underweight dog** as a welfare concern โ€“ and rightly so.
But an **overweight dog is also a welfare issue**, even though itโ€™s far more socially accepted. ๐Ÿ˜ข

Carrying excess weight puts huge strain on a dogโ€™s body and can contribute to:

* Joint and mobility problems
* Reduced stamina and willingness to move
* Increased risk of illness, including some cancers
* A shorter, less comfortable life overall

Speaking honestly, as an overweight human of a certain age, I *feel* this myself. Extra weight affects joints, limits movement, and some days it can make life feel harder than it needs to be. I have the ability to understand that and make choices about what and how much I eat.

**Our dogs donโ€™t have that choice.**
They eat what we give them โ€“ and like most of us, theyโ€™ll happily eat the lot if offered!

That means their weight is **our responsibility**, not theirs.

Keeping dogs **lean with healthy muscle** isnโ€™t about perfection or being strict โ€“ itโ€™s about kindness, comfort, and long-term wellbeing. A fitter dog usually:

* Moves more freely
* Enjoys walks and training more
* Stays active for longer into old age

And yesโ€ฆ your **bank balance may thank you too**, when youโ€™re not spending quite so much time at the vets. ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿพ

If youโ€™re unsure whether your dog is carrying too much weight, or youโ€™d like help managing it *without* taking the joy out of food and training, drop me a DM with the word PORKIE and I will send you some tips!
