As the time of year is upon us and we start the festive shopping. The awful pet Christmas line is in all the shops... Please don’t get these for your pets this Christmas, as you can see this is rawhide and it has been artificially dyed red and green and glued into different shapes.

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.
Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.
Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.
They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Please be safe this Christmas and pick a much nicer alternative for your pooches♥️

Or even try and home make dog biscuits... super easy. Cheap and a great fun to do with all the kids. we have some easy recipes we would be happy to share. 🐶

STOP PRESS: The RSPCA reporting log has gone live. Please use it to report any problems you have with fireworks/animals as the government need facts and figures before they take any action. Up to now there have been no official figures because no one is collecting and collating the information. This is an official RSPCA initiative to provide government with the information they need.

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/TKWMJJC

Although it may look like a one off survey it CAN and should be completed EVERY time an animal is affected by fireworks. You can complete it as many times as you need.

We understand that you may want to check it is bona fide before completing so you can find it on the RSPCA website. From their main page https://www.rspca.org.uk/ go to the menu and select:

* Get Involved
* Campaign
* Fireworks

Then Scroll down the page until you see the green box with "share your story" (almost at the bottom of the page). Click on the "share your fireworks story" button to begin.

You can see the RSPCA privacy notice at the bottom of their page.

In the current times, collaboration between veterinary professionals and practices is valued and appreciated more than ever. As some practices may be aware, the VPIS have collaborated with Vets Now and CVS to bring the potentially life saving ToxBox and Elixir. These services give veterinary practices 24-hour access to drugs and products used in the emergency treatment of poisoning cases, often products that practices are unlikely to stock.

Treatment available to purchase include:

European adder antivenom
Intralipid® solution
Naloxone
Acetylcysteine
Methocarbamol
Vitamin K1 preparations
Activated charcoal
Apomorphine
Ethanol
Fresh/Frozen Plasma

VPIS members can contact us at any time to be directed to their closest stock, where they can be purchased. Drugs are supplied at cost with an administrative dispensing charge.

IF YOU URGENTLY NEED ANY OF THE TREATMENTS AVAILABLE THROUGH THE TOXBOX OR ELIXIR SERVICE THEN CALL VPIS ON 0207 305 5055

With the recent spike in temperatures, we have seen an increase in number of calls regarding cooling mats for pets. These cool mats are becoming a popular choice amongst pet owners to keep pets cool, but they can sometimes be chewed/ingested by curious cats and dogs.
Cooling mats have a gel layer inside and contain a polymer designed to radiate heat back into the air or floor surface to keep a pet cool. The gel absorbs the pet’s body heat and converts it to room temperature which is normally well below the pet’s body temperature. The cover is typically nylon.
The pads do not generally contain toxic components though if large pieces of the nylon cover are ingested, these could cause a blockage in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, pets should always be supervised when using these products.
As always, if you are concerned about something your pet has ingested, you can call our Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509 000

We are wishing PD Kaiser and his handler from the Met Police Dog Unit a speedy recovery, after both were attacked on duty last night. Kaiser is lucky to be alive, after he was stabbed 5 times in the head. Despite being stabbed, Kaiser kept hold of the man until he was arrested. Get well soon Kaiser, you are one very brave boy! 💙🇬🇧🐶

There have been reports of hundreds of starfish being washed up on beaches in North Wales this weekend. The recent bad weather may be responsible for the mass strandings; however, with the good weather we are set to see this week, there will be many heading to the beach, along with their dogs.
Star fish are not themselves toxic: they can pose a risk from salt water if eaten from the sea, and there is increased risk if the starfish are rotting or mouldy. There is a minor risk of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) from accumulation of biotoxins produced by phytoplankton. It is important to note that the number of starfish containing these biotoxins is likely to be small. PSP is characterised by rapid onset neurological signs with an inability to raise the hind legs.
With the many possible dangers on a beach, it is important as always to keep a close eye on our pets if walking them there, especially taking care in areas with reports of starfish accumulation. Cases of PSP are very rare, and have only ever been confirmed on the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts.

One of the most common phone calls we receive is relating to pets ingesting ibuprofen.

Dogs are particularly sensitive to ibuprofen and related drugs such as naproxen and diclofenac. These drugs can cause gastrointestinal upset and even ulceration of the gut as well as kidney failure after ingestion of a low dose in dogs.

With these drugs often being palatable in syrups or coated tablets it is important to replace the tops of containers securely after use and do not leave any medicines unattended

Owners can call Animal Poisonline on 01202 509000 for advice if they are concerned their pet has ingested something toxic. We will be able to advise whether the animal needs to see a vet. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS for treatment advice for any poisons case - 02073055055

59 dogs have been retrieved during police operations across Swansea Neath Port Talbot, in conjunction with the RSPCA, Animal Welfare and the NCA, on Wednesday, 31st March. The dogs were recovered on animal welfare grounds as a result of search warrants.

As well as the retrieval of the dogs, a number of Rolex watches were seized and a stolen horse box and trailer was recovered. A number of cannabis plants were also discovered.

Chief Inspector Nia Hughes said: “In response to public concerns, and acting upon community intelligence, we executed several warrants across the Swansea Neath Port Talbot area. This was a fantastic example of partnership working and we are pleased to achieve such a positive result. Not only have we been able to retrieve the dogs but this is a prime example of intelligence-led policing which has resulted in the recovery of these dogs.”

Five arrests were made when officers executed the warrants across Swansea Neath Port Talbot. The arrests covered offences including cannabis cultivation, conspiracy to commit theft, conspiracy to commit burglary and money laundering offences. All five people have been released under investigation.

The majority of the dogs retrieved were rescued under animal welfare grounds however a number of the dogs are believed to have been stolen. Officers have begun trying to identify the dogs and return them to their rightful owners by checking for microchips in the pets.

Chief Inspector Hughes added: “We know the emotional impact that dogs being stolen has on their owners and I want to reassure people that we have put a substantial amount of time, effort and care into finding the people responsible, and our investigation is very much ongoing. If you believe one of the dogs is yours, then we would ask for proof of this, with a minimum being a photo of you with your dog.”

Anyone who has had a pet stolen, and wants to enquire about the possibility of their pet being among those retrieved, should contact us by the below following means and quote occurrence 2100112638
