In my last post I spoke about how I choose the correct mouthpiece to suit the conformation of your horses mouth. Here I discuss how I choose the correct cheekpieces to suit both you and your horse.

🍏 Part 2 is considering the cheekpieces.....

I am going to post about individual styles of cheekpieces and some of the myths surrounding them. Cheekpieces can offer the bit more stability, it can help aid with steering in a young horse for example.

Based on the riders capabilities, age and experience of the horse along with the finding of the conformation of the mouth I will discuss various options with you during our consultation.

🍎 Choosing a bit can seem an impossible task with the wealth of choice there is available

So many types, brands and copies!

🍏The most important thing is choosing a mouthpiece that suits the conformation of your horses mouth

During the first part of a consultation, I will take a good look at your horse's mouth to start and assess what mouthpiece will suit your horse. Then we will start to look at the arms of the bit..... I will speak more about this in a later post.

The correct mouthpiece will be influenced by the height of palate, size of tongue, presence/absence of wolf teeth, length of smile and even how active your horse is in their mouth.

🐴 During the ridden part of the consultation, we will start in your current bit and bridle to allow me to assess your horses' movements and biomechanics. It is also an opportunity to see any ‘issues’ you may be having.

🐴 I will then start by making any alterations to your Bridle, each time I make an alteration I will ask you to move your horse again to see how these changes have affected movement.

🐴 This process will continue until I have made any adjustments and alterations to your bit and bridle where I am happy with the way your horse is moving and you are happy that we have achieved your objective from the session.

🍏 Please do not worry about your riding, I am not assessing you for Grand Prix dressage riding…. I will not ask you to do anything you are not comfortable with. I need to see some transitions of walk and trot and work on a long rein as you feel comfortable.

🐴 - What happens in a consultation? - 🐴

What happens during a consultation with me? Apart from lots of horse talk.....

There are 2 parts to a consultation with me:
🔹 𝕊𝕥𝕒𝕓𝕝𝕖 ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕦𝕝𝕥𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟
🔹 ℝ𝕚𝕕𝕕𝕖𝕟 ℂ𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕦𝕝𝕥𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟

The stable consultation is a chance for me to meet your horse, give them chance become comfortable with me before I start to handle your horse.

During this time I will chat with you about your current set up of bit and bridle, and problems that you might be having and discuss what you would like to achieve from the consultation.

I will then assess your horses mouth, here I am trying to gain an idea about the kind of bit your horse may or may not like due to their mouth conformation. Do that have a particularly large tongue, how fleshy are their lips. All this will help me to find you and your horse the correct bit. I will then ask you to tack up your horse in its normal tack, nothing will change yet before we start the ridden consultation.

A hanging cheek bit can actually relieve poll pressure ✅

A hanging cheek is also great for a horse that like bit to be still in the mouth. The weight is taken up by the cheekpieces so the bit is suspended in the horses mouth.

💸 Updated pricing - April 2024

A bitting consultation with a basic bridle check, or a bridle fitting and basic bit check will remain at £70

A bridle fitting and a bitting consultation is £90

🛞 Mileage will remain at 45p a mile after 20 miles, this will be disused at the time of booking.
Where possible I will always combine your consultations with others - the more horses you can get together the lesser the costs.

Discounts available for multiple horses on one yard!
