Beware of Pine Needles from your Christmas tree 🌲

Whether your tree is real or artificial, pine needles can cause some serious issues for our pets. Pine Needle aren’t toxic to our cats or dogs but they can still be dangerous in multiple different ways such as:

🐾 Stuck in paws - Pine needles can get lodged in your pets paws, causing discomfort or injury.

⚠️ Choking hazard - Especially for small pets, pine needles can get stuck in their throat or airways, causing choking.

😣Throat Irritation- Sharp needles can scratch or irritate the throat if swallowed

💩 Gastrointestinal Issue - if ingested, they can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, or abdominal discomfort.

❄️Snow on an Artificial tree - Fake snow that’s on Fake trees is toxic to dogs & cats if licked by your pet. Symptoms of this is excess drooling, Vomiting & diarrhoea

📞If your pet, gets any of signs please call the practice immediately

Here are few tips to keep your tree and your pet safe:
🧑‍🎄 If your dog or cat likes to investigate the tree, make sure that any delicate ornaments are out of reach of your pet. Low hanging baubles can become chew toys which means they can get broken
🎄Secure the tree - pets like to climb, and the tree being indoors may confuse them which means they may try climb up the tree. Make sure your tree is well- secured to avoid it falling over if your pet decides to get too close or nudges it. A sturdy tree is key!
🐕 Choose Pet-Friendly Decorations- When buying ornaments for your tree opt for the unbreakable, soft ones instead of the sharp or breakable ones to ensure your pets safety. Consider using durable fabric or plastic baubles. However, we do recommend not encouraging your pet to play with the decorations or the tree, as they can cause a risk if ingested.

Happy December 1st! 🎄

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…. But be wary of these Christmas hazards!!

🥂 Food and Drink

* Chocolate: It contains theobromine which is a stimulant that is toxic to dogs, cats and small furries because they struggle to metabolise it. Vetsnow have a handy chocolate toxicity calculator: https://dog-chocolate-calculator.vets-now.com
* Onions: Toxic to all pets, they can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Onions are alliums which can also cause damage to red blood cells and anaemia.
* Alcohol: Ingesting alcohol can lead to alcohol poisoning which may lead to a drop in blood pressure, body temperature and blood sugar. In severe cases, it can lead to respiratory failure and seizures.
* Dried Fruit: Raisins/Sultanas/currants are toxic to cats, dogs and guinea pigs. If left untreated, ingesting these can lead to kidney failure. Pets can become extremely poorly even after eating a small number of them.
* Macadamia nuts: May lead to pancreatitis due to the high oil content. These nuts can also affect nerve and muscle function.
* Mouldy food: Mouldy produces highly toxic mycotoxins. These toxins can cause seizures, tremors, vomiting and fevers.
* Bones: Cooked bones can splinter which can puncture the digestive tract and can cause an intestinal obstruction. Bones can also damage their teeth when chewing on them.
* Blue cheese: This may contain Roquefortine C which is poisonous to dogs and can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, high temperature and tremors.
* Pigs in blankets - Very salty and fatty and in large quantities could cause pancreatitis.

🎄Decorations

* Glass Baubles: Some cats like to play with decor on the Christmas tree which may result in a bauble falling off and smashing. Ingesting glass can cause blockages or perforation, it can also cause wounds on your cat.
* Poinsettia, Ivy, Mistletoe, Holly: A lot of these plants can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in pets, some can even cause skin issues if pets come into contact with them.
* Tinsel & Fairy lights: Eating tinsel can cause a blockage and eating fairy lights could lead to your pet getting electrocuted.
* Lillies: These are highly poisonous to cats and can lead to kidney failure if left untreated. They can also cause gastrointestinal upset in dogs.

🎁 Presents

* Batteries: Alkaline batteries have a risk of leaking when ingested which can burn the oesophagus or even cause a blockage if swallowed whole.
* Toys: Some dogs have a habit of chewing toys, including children’s toys, these then have a chance of causing a blockage.

⭐️Other

* Anti freeze: As the weather gets colder the anti freeze comes out, even the smallest amount is toxic to pets and can cause kidney failure and death.

‼️ If you feel your pet has ingested or come into contact with any of these items, please contact the practice immediately for further advice. If the practice is closed, our out of hours provider is Abbeyhouse in Morley‼️

Meet Olive 😍
Olive, 8 Week Old Cocker Spaniel, came in for an Health Check a few weeks ago.

Olive was really relaxed while visiting us but some pets are really stressed while travelling or being in strange situations.
Signs of stress:
😾Heavy Panting/ Drooling
😾Barking/ Hissing
😾Tail between legs/ took back ears
😾Hiding/ Shaking
😾Refuse to take treats
😾Lip licking

There are a number of helpful products to help reduce stress such as pheromones that you spray onto blankets or use diffusers for the rooms or wipe that you can use to wipe on the chest and muzzle (avoiding eyes).
If you notice that these don’t work, during your consultation you could discuss possible drug therapies to help.
