FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL CAT HEALTH MONTH!🐱

Here are just a few of many ways you can participate to keep your furry friend happy & healthy!

💉 Schedule regular vet checkups and ensure you stay up to date with vaccinations as these protect your cat from disease.

🍴💦 Ensure they have a balanced diet & good hydration. This can help them maintain a healthy weight!

🧸 Play with them! This provides mental and physical stimulation. Exercise can also help maintain a healthy weight.

🦷 Dental hygiene is important in our pets! Brush your cat’s teeth (if they will tolerate it) or you can provide dental treats.

‼️ Cats are experts at hiding their discomfort so if you see a change in their behaviour, please book in for a vet appointment! Maintaining regular checkups are key to identifying potential issues early on.

Share with us your beautiful furry feline friends in the comments 🐱❤️

🦷 Checking your pets teeth

⭐️ Below is a guide on how you can check your pets teeth at home, if you have any issues you can chat with a vet or nurse at your next appointment on guidance.

⭐️ It’s key from a young age to get your pet familiar with having places checked like their mouth. You can still teach an older pet to become comfortable with this but it may take a bit longer. The key to this is to offer a lot of positive reinforcement after checking their mouth so they associate the experience with positivity.

🐶 Dogs are more prone to tooth root abscesses and periodontal disease. Tooth root abscesses are pockets of infection around the root of the tooth, they may cause swelling along the jaw or below the eye. Periodontal disease is a progressive disease caused by bacteria in the mouth due to the accumulation of tartar/plaque.

🐱Cats are more prone to resorptive lesions (it’s said over a third of cats have this issue). Resorptive lesions are when odontoclast cells begin to break down and absorb the structures of the tooth leaving the pulp cavity exposed causing pain and sensitivity.

⭐️ Teeth should be checked on a regular basis & brushed if possible. If you discover any issues with your pets teeth, feel free to book a free dental clinic with one of our nurses or an appointment with a vet!

Meet Drake 🥰

Drake, a 3 year old border collie, visited our Pontefract branch for his annual vaccinations, which he was very good for!☺️

Drake wears a muzzle when he comes to visit us because he is not friendly with other dogs.

Muzzles should be comfortable to wear as modelled by Drake and this means:

✨ Allowing room so they can pant
✨Being able to receive treats through them

Reasons a dog may wear a muzzle:

✨Reactive with people
✨Reactive with other dogs
✨A scavenger/ eating things they shouldn’t
✨Advocating for space when out and about
✨Breed specific legislation
✨Instead of wearing a buster collar

Many misconceptions are spread about muzzle wearing including that they are troubled or untrained dogs when in fact muzzled dogs are still great dogs! We welcome muzzle wearing to the practice if it helps you and your pet feel safer! Drake is a lovely dog and looks amazing in his muzzle!❤️

Meet Dexter 🥰

Dexter, a 1 year old Labrador, visited our Pontefract Branch last week as he’d managed to cut his pad. One of RVNs, Emma, bandaged his paw to keep it clean whilst the injury starts to heal. The plastic boot keeps the bandage clean and dry, when going outdoors, which helps to prevent any complications like infections.

Look at how happy he is after having his bandage put on with his little boot.

He was such a cute, happy boy 🥰

Meet Arthur 🥰
At 14 weeks old, Arthur the Cocker Spaniel came into our Pontefract branch for the last part of his primary vaccinations as well as his kennel cough vaccine.

Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can spread quickly between dogs while in the kennels or even out at the park socialising.

What kennel cough does?
Kennel Cough is an airway infection that causes a nasty cough in dogs. Similar to human colds, kennel cough can be caused by a number of different germs.

Where can my dog catch kennel cough?
It’s most common in areas where lots of different dogs gather, such as kennels, dog shows, doggy day care, dog walkers that walk pets in groups and even out on a walk if your pet likes to socialise with other dogs.

How we give the kennel cough vaccine?
The most commonly used and most effective is the intranasal vaccine which a few drops are put into the nostril of your dog. Some dogs dislike having liquid put up their nose so there is also a injectable version of it.

Symptoms of Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough can cause a hacking cough, fever, lethargy and loss of appetite.

When to get the Kennel Cough vaccine?
Puppies can receive the vaccine as early as 6-8 weeks of age and then a booster should be given at least every year after that.

If you’d like your pet to have the kennel cough vaccine at their next booster, please ring/message the practice to let us know. To be aware the kennel cough vaccine is an extra charge.

Five Welfare Needs for your pets
Do you know the 5 welfare needs for your pet?
Behaviour
Is the study of how animals move in their environment, how they interact socially, how they learn about their environment, how an animal might achieve cognitive understanding of its environment.

Companionship
Animals are good companions for humans, they offer emotional support in many situations, they listen and do not judge and they’re there when you feel lonely.

Health
Defined in animals as the absence of disease or the normal functioning of an organism and normal behaviour based on the observation of a certain number of individuals that determine the standard and thus health

Environment
Provide your dog with a safe, clean environment
Provide adequate protection from hazards
Provide your dog with a comfortable, clean, dry, quiet, draught- free rest area
Change your dog bedding as well as your cats litter tray and your small furries hutch regularly and make sure it’s comfortable
Provide your dog with somewhere it can go to avoid things that frightens it
Provide your dog with access to a suitable place, away from its resting area, which it can use as a toilet area as needed
Allow your dog, if it lives outside, to spend time with its owners and to be part of the family environment
Make sure that any place you leave your dog is large enough at all times, a comfortable area with effective ventilation and temperature control

Diet
There are a variety of different diets for animals.

Dry food is the most common category of pet food either from the supermarket to the pet shop and even veterinary food. Benefits of dry food:
🦴Easier to manage
🦴Longer - lasting
🦴More Economic
🦴Better for weight loss
🦴Cleans Teeth
🦴Cleaner for Dog Beards
Another option is Wet/ Canned food which can be for dogs or cats. Some owners feed this separately from dry food or mix it in with them.

Happy ! 🐕‍🦺
Beat the January blues & get out in the fresh air by walking your dog!

Walking has health benefits for both you and your dog.

Here are some of our top tips:

🐕‍🦺 Physical activity is essential for all dogs. Frequent walks have many health benefits for dogs including: improving cardiovascular health, reducing risk of becoming overweight and allows them to build muscle and strength. It can also help release a lot of energy.

🐕‍🦺 Not only does walking improve mental health of humans, it can be a great mental stimulation for dogs. Boredom is common in dogs, a lack of mental stimulation can lead to destructive behaviour. Frequent walks allow dogs to discover new sights, sounds and smells. Dogs discover the world with their noses so on walks allow them to sniff things as this can also give their brains a workout as they process the new scents.

🐕‍🦺 Walking is a great way of socialising your dogs, especially younger dogs. Socialising allows you to expose dogs to different people, animals and environments (e.g. people in hats, reversing lorries etc) and allows them to become confident around these stimuli. Keeping dogs mainly inside means they won’t have the opportunity to interact with people and other dogs and therefore may not know how to behave correctly when exposed to these environments.

🐕‍🦺 Bonding is an essential part of the relationship between an owner and their dog. Walking is a great way of building trust and a great relationship with your dog. Also, going on a frequent walks allows owners to understand their dog’s behaviour and body language within different environments.

🐕‍🦺 Regular walks for puppies helps owners to potty train them because you’re giving them the opportunity to relieve themselves outside and rewarding them for it.

🐕‍🦺 Walks are a great way for training your dog. Take a small bag of treats during your walks and positively reward your dog. You can use this when potty training, recall training and other tricks outside. Training outside allows your dogs to learn to focus on you whilst there may be a lot of distracting stimuli around.

With all of these benefits we encourage you to head outside with your dog and enjoy nature with them! Don’t forget to take poo bags & treats ☺️🥾

Take your dog for a walk today and share a photo with us in the comments below, we’d love to see them having fun👇
