Rabbit Awareness Week - Tips for a Happy Hutch! 🐰🏠

Your rabbit’s hutch is more than just a shelter — it’s their home, their safe space, and the foundation of their health and wellbeing.

Here are a few things your rabbit hutch should include to keep your rabbit happy, healthy, and comfortable:

🌿 1. A Constant Supply of Fresh HayHay is the staple of a rabbit’s diet and a comfy bedding option. Make sure it’s clean, dry, and always available — both for eating and nesting.

🏠 2. A Hideaway ShelterEvery rabbit needs a quiet, enclosed area to feel safe. Provide a wooden hide box or covered area where they can retreat and rest.

🧸 3. Enrichment & Chew ToysRabbits love to chew — and they need to! Safe wooden toys, cardboard tubes, foraging boxes and wicker balls can help keep them mentally stimulated.

🪵 5. Solid, Non-Slip FlooringAvoid wire mesh — it causes sore feet and long-term injury. Use solid floors with soft bedding, fleece, or mats for comfort.

💧 6. Fresh WaterAlways provide them with fresh water to keep them hydrated.

☔️ 7. Good Ventilation & Weather ProtectionMake sure the hutch is sheltered from wind, rain, and direct sun. In hot months, keep it in the shade and well ventilated to avoid overheating.

🐰 Rabbit Awareness Week - FlyStrike‼️

🪰 Warmer months bring a serious danger for rabbits: flystrike (myiasis). This life-threatening condition occurs when flies lay eggs on soiled or damp fur, usually around the bum. The hatched maggots quickly burrow into the skin, causing severe pain, shock, and if left untreated can be fatal.

🔍 Signs to watch for:

🔸 Wet or dirty fur around the rear
🔸 Strong odour or visible maggots
🔸 Lethargy, hiding, or refusing food
🔸 Skin redness, swelling, or open wounds

🐰 Prevention is key:

🔹 Check your rabbit’s bum area daily
🔹 Keep bedding clean and dry
🔹 Ensure a healthy, high-fibre diet to avoid soft or sticky droppings

‼️ High-risk rabbits include those who are overweight, arthritic, elderly, or have dental or urinary problems.

⚠️ If you suspect flystrike, contact us immediately!

🐰 Rabbit awareness week - Gut Stasis‼️

Gut stasis is a serious and potentially fatal condition where a rabbit’s digestive system slows down or stops completely. It can escalate very quickly, and early action is critical.

🔍 Watch out for these key warning signs:

✅ Reduced or no faecal droppings
✅ Bloated or tense abdomen
✅ Reluctance to eat (even favourite foods)
✅ Hunched posture or hiding
✅ Quiet, lethargic behaviour

These signs often mean your rabbit is in pain and distress. Gut stasis can be triggered by stress, pain, dehydration, dental issues, or a low-fibre diet — but sometimes there’s no obvious cause.

📞 If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait — contact us immediately.

Rabbit awareness week! - Tooth Burring 🦷🐰

Did you know that a rabbit’s teeth never stop growing? Rabbits need regular dental care to keep their teeth healthy and pain-free.

When a rabbit’s teeth don't wear down naturally (due to diet, genetics, or alignment issues), they can develop overgrown teeth, which may cause:
🔸 Drooling
🔸 Trouble eating or weight loss
🔸 Facial swelling or eye issues
🔸 Behavior changes due to pain

That’s where tooth burring comes in! This procedure helps gently file down overgrown teeth, making your rabbit comfortable again and preventing serious complications like abscesses.

🐾 If your rabbit is showing any signs of dental discomfort, you can schedule a dental check-up with us!

Here we have Nibble who is a regular rabbit that visits us for his teeth burring! He is looking good for a 12 and a half year rabbit! 💜🐰

Summer is arriving with the beautiful sunshine we are having!☀️

‼️ Please be mindful and don’t leave your pets in parked hot cars. Cars act as greenhouses and can heat up quickly, pets don’t cool as well as us due to their thick fur and therefore can develop heatstroke very quickly!

Some signs of heatstroke include:

☀️ Panting
☀️ Drooling/Salivating
☀️ Very red OR Pale gums
☀️ Restlessness
☀️ Signs of mental confusion
☀️ Collapsing
☀️ Seizures
☀️ Little to no urine production

‼️ Contact the practice immediately should you feel your pet has heatstroke!

‼️ Grass Seeds & Dogs ‼️

Summertime means grass seeds and we are starting to see a lot of patients coming in with grass seeds stuck in various places such as paws, noses, eyes and ears 🐶

‼️ Always check your dog for grass seeds if they have been running in long grass. Remove any grass seeds you find, these may be between toes, around their eyes or even around their armpits.

Due to their pointy end, grass seeds can easily pierce skin, enter the body and travel around causing issues such as abscesses and infection. Should you find a grass seed stuck in your dog, please contact the practice as they need to be removed quickly!
