was founded by Colleen Paige and her mission was to help galvanise the public to recognise the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.
Puppy day is also an excellent opportunity to show off your dogs supermodel side and give them some extra cuddles for all the joy they bring.
Ways to celebrate this day with your puppies:
🐶Go to the dog park & let your puppy play
🐶Give your puppy their favourite treat
🐶Play with them with their toys

Here is Jen the 11 week old Jack Russell Terrier, isn’t she just adorable 🥰

📸We’d love to see your puppies in the comments 🐶

Today is
Tips for yellow dogs when visiting the practice:

1. Muzzle training at home is very useful, even if your dog is not reactive. This will ensure that the muzzle is a positive experience and easy to place in the event your pet ever needs one in a painful situation. Blue cross provide a very useful video on their website/YouTube channel. The muzzle up project provides very good guidance on measuring for your own muzzle if needed on a walk.

2. Desensitising and getting your dog used to being touched on all areas of their body if tolerated. This should be a positive experience using good treat rewards such as sausage or cheese, or a toy if this is their favourite reward. You should stop if your dog displays any stress signals.

3. Bringing your dog to the vets on a secure, properly fitted harness and collar to ensure that they cannot escape in either the car park or consult room. Double clip harnesses with both a front and back clip for the lead are perfect for this scenario.

4. On arrival if your dog is people or dog reactive please leave your dog in the car until called into the consultation. We can adapt the entrance into the room to avoid other dogs and people. Our waiting rooms especially at pontefract are quite small and this can increase anxiety levels.

5. Please bring high level rewards for your dog such as good treats or favourite toy. Lick mats are quite a good distraction.

6. If your dog is especially nervous please enquire about medications prior to bringing them for either operations or consultations. The receptionists can liaise with the vets and nurses to ensure the visit to the vets is as stress free as possible.

7. Our nurses run socialisation clinics and a couple of our nurses have a special interest in dog behaviour, so these are very useful to get your dog more comfortable with visits before they need an actual veterinary visit.

Meet Waffle 🥰
Waffle is a 5 year old Beauceron. 🐶
Waffle had a TPLO surgery to treat his cruciate ligament rupture in France in 2020 when he was 1 year old, he then had his TPLO plates removed in 2024 because it was causing ongoing abscesses.

Now in 2025, we have seen Waffle again and he is doing so much better! We have signed him off and he can now start to go on walks for 10-15 minutes.

Look how happy he is❤️

Did you know March is adopt a rescue guinea pig month?! 🐹

It was created to raise awareness of the guinea pigs in rescue centres still waiting for their forever homes❤️

Here are some fun facts about these small furries:

💛 They love to chat with eachother! You may often hear a variety of sounds like “wheek-wheek” to express excitement or a low purring sound when they are comfortable together!

💛 They cannot produce their own Vitamin C so need it from their food. Low Vitamin C can cause scurvy symptoms like tiredness or weight loss.

💛 They CANNOT live with rabbits! They have different nutritional needs and rabbits can often bully guinea pigs.

💛 They are not actually from Guinea and are not related to pigs!

Please share with us photos of your guinea pigs or any stories if you have adopted a guinea pig!🐹

🩹World Spay Day 🩹
is an annual campaign that takes place on the last Tuesday of February. This day encourages people to spay or neuter their pets to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of stray animals.

We recommend keyhole spay in female dogs as this is a massive improvement in animal welfare compared to a routine spay. Here are some reasons why an ovariectomy is recommended:
🩹Shorter Anaesthetic time
🩹Smaller op sites between 2.5cm & 1cm (depending on size of dog) 1 port site for the scope & another for the instrument.
🩹Minimum tissue handling & damage
🩹Much shorter procedure
🩹Shorter recovery time, dogs are usually back to being themselves within 2 to 3 hours.
