This is a perfect example of what a low and high palate looks like on a horses skull 💀

The low palate shows how little room there is in the mouth without the tongue been there and you can imagine who much a single joint would hurt when the action of the bit is applied and how a lozenge and French link can irritate the palate.

The skull with the high palate shows how much more room there is compared to a low palate but it is worth mentioning that breeds that have high palates often have large tongues 👅 so they often require a bit that gives tongue relief.

A nice little angled Irish today for my top pupil 🎓🐴.

12 months ago I was warned that this ginger dude was all about violence when it come to having a hair cut, fortunately that wasn’t the case and we managed to talk him down from the ledge.

I give 100% credit to his loving “hooman” for putting in the hours to de sensitise him in between our sessions!!

Allyn Davies - your daughters are fine young horse women with a bright future ahead of them!!

I would also like to credit the girls at Petwise, Treforrest Industrial Estate after finding an injured pigeon on the bypass.

I have named him Dave & I think he will be ok after his traumatic day - We all have them Dave - generally mine are on a Monday not a Friday!!😂😂🫣🐦

This dude is a stallion with the temperament of a lamb! Clipping him without even a head collar in a barn full of mares & fillies without a single reaction 😳

So…..Order of the afternoon here was to clip the big man out as he is very sweaty but to achieve the traditional look, brief understood 🫡.

I’m sure that most of you have seen this video - it always tends to circulate around clipping season!

If your horse misbehaves - whether it be barging, biting, striking out with front legs, or kicking out with hind legs - you must tell your clipper/farrier/physio/vet/saddler, or any other professional you have employed to handle your horse in any way.

Horses are quick, and strong, and most of us are not super human enough to dodge equine limbs successfully every single time.

If your horse acts in this manner, it is your responsibility as an owner to work with your horse to make it comfortable in whatever situation it is in, or make sure your horse is properly sedated if this is not possible.

Proper sedation is -
• Intravenous sedative administered by a vet
• Domoseden which is an oral sedation which is bought from your vet, and can be administered by yourself - this however doesn’t work for all horses, so you must be sure that it works for yours, and the correct amount is administered in the correct way.

Improper sedation is -
• Sedalin
• Relaquin
• ACP
• CBD/Hemp products
• Magic calmer pastes
• Calming cookies
• Twitching (ear/nose/neck)

I am more than happy to stop a clip (at any point!) if an owner has failed to tell me about a horse’s behaviour, or if I feel it is unsafe to continue for any reason - my safety is the top of my priority list, as if I get injured, then I can’t work.

What’s other professional’s policies? I’d be interested to hear of any experiences you’ve had, and how you’ve dealt with it!

🥕 QUICK CARROT FACT 🥕

It's carrot time of year again!

Carrots are a useful succulent for horses on winter mostly-dry diets e.g. hay and bucket feed, with limited grass intake.

Carrots are LOW IN SUGAR on a fresh basis at around 5%. Compare this to a typical sugar content of hay of 8%:

🥕 1 medium carrot (60g) = 3g sugar
🟨 1 small bale slice of typical meadow hay (1kg) = 81g sugar

Owners often consider carrots to be high in sugar but that's on a dry matter basis i.e. if you dry the carrot. Most of a fresh carrot is water - around 80% - and this means its sugar content is diluted.

Some vets recommend not to feed carrots to overweight, laminitic or EMS horses or ponies, but this is due to the risk of the owner over-feeding carrots (the risk of 1 becomes, 2, becomes 3, becomes half a bucketful) NOT the sugar content of a single carrot.

When clipping, the new coat can often look dull due to the removal and disturbance of the old coat. To get the shine back to the coat, follow these two simple steps:
* Before the clip, use our Pre Clip Wash to remove as much grease as possible, ensuring the coat is completely dry before clipping. This can be used as a hot cloth method, diluting a small amount in a bucket of water.
* After clipping, we Hot Cloth the coat again, but using a few drops of Smart Grooming's Super Shine lotion (non oil-based) to soothe the skin and give the coat a final condition and shine. ✨

Everyones shouting already it's too cold to bath...

1)It's still double figures.

2)The rain is not warm when it falls from the sky.

3)Dirty horses damage clippers.

4)Dirty horses blunt blades.

5)The blades can then snag and cause your horse discomfort or even pain.

6) hot clothing a clipped horse works great and really lifts the grease, but hot clothing a hairy horse will only wipe the surface clean and compress the dirt and grease underneath making it even tougher to get through.

7) I'll have to charge you extra for wrecking my equipment 🤷

8) please don't cover your horse in any magical ore clip oils or no rinse washes.

9) does nobody remember how to walk a horse round and thatch it so it stays warm til it's dry?
