(5)

Owned and run by Natalie Marshall BSc (Hons), the Animal Behaviour Academy (ABA) was established in early 2014. Our primary aim is to promote awareness of animal behaviour through our pet services with training and advice. We currently provide the following as part of our pet sitting and dog walking service in Abergavenny and the surrounding areas:

- Pet Sitting: looking after your cats, rabbits,

fish and any other small animals whilst you are away.

- Dog Walking: half hour to full hour walks from your home around your local area. Whether you are working, on holiday, suddenly called away or need general assistance with pet care; we are here to help. You can message us, email us at [email protected] or call us on 07879 688 254 to make a booking

There's been a lot of shared posts, supposedly from a vet, but without any real evidence that it is, saying not to give your dogs ice in this heat. Here's the truth, from a qualified, real-life UK vet.

Come on everyone let’s dispel the stupid ice myth. You can give your dogs ice to keep them cool over the hot days. It DOES NOT cause them to increase their body temperature, it actually KEEPS THEM COOL.

Pop in their bowl or freeze some treats. Don’t put it in their bum to cool them, another stupid myth.

ICE IS GOOD FOR COOLING DOGS, yes it really is (from a vet)

Aggression is never the root cause of a problem. Its not an emotion, it is a behaviour caused by an emotion.

While anger is an emotion it is usually a secondary emotion. It's a social survival skill - highlighting a problem in order to come to a resolution.

But if we're not listening to the problem, we can view our pets' behaviour AS the problem and react as it happens.

The three most common reasons for aggression are frustration, fear and pain. By understanding this we can change our perception of what is actually happening and add in a good dollop of empathy.

By looking at our pets' most subtle communication we can give them space, reassurance, a change in mindset and help them to develop self-control. By understanding what they're telling us they NEED, we can provide that for them - and isn't that exactly what we want to do?

It's been a chill at home kind of day. Rather odd when my job is to walk, but has to be done when the heat is too much. The dogs all loved the extra cwtches and had a little introduction to tellington touch too! 💕

As the weather continues to warm, we'll be doing everything we can to keep your pets safe.

A few things we can all do to help our dogs:

- Keep to gentle, shady walks for sniffing rather than rigorous exercise

- Walk earlier and later in the day when the temperatures are more comfortable

- Let your dog take the lead - if they seem tired or less interested in having a walk it's not a problem to miss it. Dogs too can be too hot and bothered.

- For dogs that have endless energy brain games at home can help to wear them out mentally until its safe to walk again (teach them hide and seek - it's a real winner!).

We have a hot spell of weather this week with its peak expected on Friday..
So here's some extremely helpful information to keep your pets safe in the heat.
