Treats - Naughty or nice?

We all like to give our beloved pets some treats, but did you know...…???

🐕30g of cheddar cheese is the equivalent to a human eating 1.5 chocolate bars!!

🐱A cat eating a tin of tuna is the equivalent of an adult human consuming 35 chicken nuggets!!!

🐕 1 slice of buttered toast given to a dog is the equivalent to a human eating 3 bags of crisps!!!

🐱A cup of whole milk given to a cat is the equivalent to a human eating 3 quarter-pounders!!!

❗59% of dogs, and 39% of cats in the UK are overweight or obese!

❗Studies have proven that dogs maintained at a healthy weight live longer 🥰

❗Overweight cats are TWICE as likely to develop diabetes, and this rises to EIGHT TIMES more likely if they are obese

If you would like any help with your pets weight management, please get in touch and we can chat to you about our amazing nurse weight clinics.

Prescription Rules from the RCVS:

From 1st September 2023 the Royal College of veterinary Surgeons (RCVS, the regulatory body for the veterinary profession in the UK) introduced new guidance on prescribing prescription only medicines. The full guidance can be found on: https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidcance/

The new guidance requires that a physical examination of the pet has to be performed every time any antibiotics, antifungals, anti-virals and parasiticides are prescribed. This includes topical preparations such as ear and eye drops, and all prescription flea/worm/tick products.

The guidance was created towards ensuring responsible use of medications, and reducing the veterinary impact on the wider issues of global antibiotic resistance and decline of insect populations.

What this means in practice is that your pet will need to come in for an in-person consultation every time if the following occurs:
1) We need to prescribe medication for an ear infection (if the treatment contains antibiotics)
2) We need to prescribe antibiotics for any skin problem, even if its a chronic problem.
3) We/you decide to change from one flea/worm/tick product to another
4) We suspect a urinary tract infection (remote / online consultation and urine analysis/culture are no longer sufficient)
5) We suspect a gastrointestinal infection (remote / online consultation and faecal analysis/culture are no longer sufficient)

For the pets that are having regular anti-parasiticide (flea, tick and worm) treatment, if we have seen your pet and there is a plan in place on your pet’s clinical history - we can continue to prescribe the same medication for a duration of 12 months, they will then require a check up. For now, it is our plan to assess anti-parasiticide needs for all pets we see, whether it is for their annual booster and health check, or for a veterinary consultation.

If you would like to discuss this in more depth please contact us on 01495 616656.

Overweight dogs✏️🐶

Even if you’ve noticed your dog is carrying a bit of extra weight, you may not realise how much it can affect their health.

Did you know that being as little as 10% overweight can greatly increase the risks associated with serious health conditions, such as diabetes mellitus, arthritis, urinary stones or heart disease!!!

Excess weight can also significantly shorten their life expectancy compared to a healthy pet.

Hills' tasty 'Perfect Weight' dog food makes it easier for your pet to enjoy and maintain their weight loss journey!

In a selection of wet and dry food, the high protein, high fibre formula is enriched with L-carnitine & coconut oil, which helps support pets' metabolism.

You can find out more about Hills' food in this link: https://www.hillspet.co.uk/science-plan

Dog Walks!

In the UK, 13% of dog owners admit to not walking their dogs every day!!

When we commit to owning a dog, we know that we need to walk them frequently for physical exercise, mental stimulation and socialising. But many of us don't seem to know how much exercise we should be giving them. This actually depends on many factors including their breed, age, health and personality.

Your dog's breed is one of the most important factors that determines how long you should be walking them for. There are some breeds that are more energetic and excitable than others, and because of this, they need more frequent and vigorous exercise. Then there are other breeds that have instinctive preferences for play and exercise that they were purposely bred for.

If your four-legged friend is suffering with health issues, then they may not be fit for lots of exercise. In this case, it’s best to speak to your vet for advice on how long they should exercise and what is the best way to do so.

How to prepare for your vet visit 🐶🐱🐰

A little preparation goes a long way to ensure that you get the most from your vet visit.

Whether you’re coming in for your pets annual health check, or an unexpected sick visit, these tips will help set you up for successful visit for both yourself and your pet.

1) Make a list of everything you want to cover:
With so many new sights, sounds, and smells, a trip to the vet can be a bit overwhelming for your furry family member. It’s easy to forget to ask all of your questions if your puppy is romping around, that’s why it’s important that you jot down a list of any questions or concerns you have prior to your visit.

2) Schedule your appointment well in advance:
Be sure to schedule your pet’s appointment as early as possible if you have a preferred time and/or vet. We do try to schedule you at your selected time of day with enough notice but the more notice the greater the chance.
For non-urgent appointments such as vaccinations / nail clips etc, you can book online using our PetsApp booking calendar.

3) Start the experience at home:
What many pet parents don’t realise is that the vet visit experience starts before you even get in the car. For cats, it’s important they become accustomed to their travel carrier well before the vet visit. Try placing your carrier in a low-stress area of the home for at least 3 days before the appointment. You can add their favourite treats, catnip, and even spray Pet remedy into the carrier to encourage your cat to step inside and explore. This will help to reduce fear and anxiety during transport.
For active dogs, consider a long walk before their vet appointments to burn off extra energy. If your dog is new to a lead, practice walking on a short non-retractable leash before you come to the clinic.

4) Come hungry!
So long as there are no health contraindications, bring your pet hungry. If you have a food-motivated pet, you can provide maximum distraction with their favourite treats. For example, if you’re bringing in your puppy for their vaccines, bring some treats to keep them occupied, or if your cat is particularly nervous, bring along a satchel of their favourite catnip. This way, you won’t have to stress about their behaviour and they’ll receive a thorough exam. Bringing in your pet on an empty stomach also allows your vet to collect fasting blood work as needed.

5) Set Reminders:
Unfortunately, not all pets will receive a clean bill of health which means that you may have some post-appointment homework to do.
be sure to follow your vet’s care recommendations and schedule follow-up appointments before you depart from your appointment.
