A PHOTO SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS

This photo is both joyous and heartbreaking at the same time. Joyous, as we were able to rehome Bambi today with less than 48 hours before the self-exemption window closes. At this moment in time she clearly does not meet the standard for an XL Bully, but was adopted and then exempted as a precaution as she may fit the standard once fully grown (please note we took relevant advice). But heartbreaking, she starts her new life under the restrictions required by exemption despite being such a young puppy and never putting a paw wrong.

Her new big brother is Whittaker, another Hope Rescue adopted dog who despite not being an XL Bully (he was born in our care to a beautiful Staffie mum), was also sensibly exempted by his wonderful owners as a precaution as he met a substantial number of the prescribed characteristics. We are so grateful to them for opening their heart and home to Bambi, and also to her foster family for working on her muzzle training.

Be happy Bambi. We're so pleased you will be able to live out your life despite the restrictions, a life that will now tragically be denied to any other XL Bully types coming into our care 💔

How embarrassing is your dog?

I’m here to make you feel better in the face of social media perfection. I have five dogs who have all mortally embarrassed me at least once.

Trevor: I did a behaviour consultation from my home years ago. I invited clients into the house to sit down and chat and shut my dogs in the kitchen. Feeling very smug about how quiet and well behaved they had been I went into the kitchen and discovered my tiny 14kg staffie had jumped onto the kitchen counter, eaten a whole bag of dry rice and done a s**t on the hob. The back door was open. The hob is about 6ft from the back door.

Elsie: as a puppy she got sick in a friends car while she was on my lap, so to avoid her vomiting in the car or on me I had to hold her head out of the window and she spewed so violently it splattered onto the windscreen of the car behind us.

Peaches: a week after I adopted her she escaped the front door and I had to chase her around my estate. An errant foxhound with no recall whatsoever having a jolly old time. I only caught her when she stopped to have a dump on someone’s front lawn and I rugby tackled her.

Aalto: Cornwall agility show. On the start line he pi**ed into my shoe, eliminating us before we had even crossed the first jump. He also did a poo on my trainers seesaw. He also had a ‘coming of age’ moment after hu***ng my arm in the middle of an online scentwork class during lockdown that required cleaning up with many paper towels.

Bendy: launched herself off a 20ft wall into the sea in Cardiff bay while I was on a first date. This poor man had to help me scale said wall and scoop out a wild and feral Labrador out of the sea. She didn’t want to be scooped she wanted to be at one with the dolphins.

Sometimes we see dog trainers post the many amazing things their dogs can do. But let’s be real, dogs are dogs and sometimes they do really stupid and silly things. I love my dogs errors and poor life choices. They remind me every day that perfection doesn’t exist.

So tell me YOUR dogs most embarrassing story!

This is Mia. She was born deaf 7 years ago and was sold with a chip that identifies her as an American Bulldog. She is a gentle and kind dog whose owner lost her home and we took her on. Mia has gone through multiple surgeries for mammary tumours and she was lucky enough to go to a foster home.

Our government deems her to be a dangerous dog because of her height and the shape of head they say she is an XL bully. To save her life she had to be adopted and her fosterer agreed to do this and of course we will sponsor her and cover insurance, registration and vets bills forever. Although Mia is the kindest and most gentle girl she now has to wear a muzzle in public too.

My questions to all of you reading this are:

1. So far I have not met one vet who agrees with this law. So as they are governed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons should the RCVS not listen to their people and represent the vets and tell their vets it’s against their ethics to put healthy dogs to sleep so all vets can literally refuse to do this?

2. If the Government chooses to make rash decisions and show their ignorance, should we all just be like sheep and blindly obey. Or should we get rid of that Government? Remember they also make decisions about your health and your children’s future as well as your money and beloved dogs too.

3. If you have not thought out of the box and done something like write a letter, do a post on social media or talked to your MP about this - why not? Right now, it’s a ban for so called XL bullies but when the human offenders can’t have those they will simply choose another breed!

4. Laws whether passed or not can be changed with votes (like Brexit was). Come on let’s not allow the Government to act without thinking. Lives will be lost people made homeless (as councils now won’t allow so called XL bullies in their houses) and will it stop attacks? No - it’s been proven by other countries that is not the way to tackle the problem.

My last thought. If we are going to judge a book by its cover so to speak, we surely should judge the government in the same light!!!!
If you love dogs please think and act. It’s never too late.

A dog has been seized because the owner applied for exemption but thought the muzzle and lead conditions started on January 1st.

If you have received an exemption certificate you must comply with all the conditions immediately.
