S̶o̶c̶i̶a̶l̶i̶s̶i̶n̶g̶ your dog 🤦🏻‍♀️
The word ‘socialising’ is not wrong but for so many the meaning isn’t understood from a dogs development point of view. For us, ‘socialising’ is VERY different, which is why I prefer the use of ‘exposure.’
What socialisation should not be:
🌵 letting your puppy off lead to run up to every other dog so they can experience playing
🌵only letting your puppy meet other dogs when on a short lead
🌵 letting older dogs ‘teach’ the younger ones a ‘lesson’
🌵 letting all strangers, your family members, including children, meet, greet + play with your puppy unsupervised/unplanned
🌵 letting your puppy have free reign of the home without any prior communication of what’s right and wrong
🌵 free exercise at dog parks + dog day care
🙌 EXPOSING your puppy to as many different situations as possible up until 16 weeks old is crucial……WHY? 🐾 everything they are exposed to during this time will help reduce any unwanted behaviours in adulthood. You’re giving your dog its best chance to be calm and confident, no matter the scenario it’s faced with.
What to do:
🌝 introduce your puppy to dogs that you know behave well. Making use of long lines so that they cannot run up to every dog they see + offering you much more control
🌝 practicing impulse control at every opportunity (doors, cars, with toys, food + for when you do let them off leash)
🌝 advocate for your dog by asking strangers, friends and family to not immediately give the puppy attention when they meet outdoors or indoors
🌝 showing your puppy what is right + wrong in your home by showing them + creating boundaries
🌝 get your puppy/dog used to sounds, different environments - practice taking to the vet’s when they’ve no appointment, hold areas of their bodies (muzzle, paws, tail) to desensitise them
EASY TIP 💡 : feeding your dog in a box full of recycling items > desensitises you startling noises/creates confidence
𝕋𝕙e 𝕘𝕠𝕒𝕝 𝕠𝕗 𝕖𝕩𝕡𝕠𝕤𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣 𝕕𝕠𝕘:
🙋🏻‍♀️ your dog is neutral to their environments
🙋🏻‍♀️ training is much easier, especially outdoors
🙋🏻‍♀️ less chance of behaviours developing
🙋🏻‍♀️ you have a calm + confident dog

I 🖤 looking back at old videos and thinking about what I thought I knew compared to what I know now.
When I compare myself to my [dog trainer] idols I am unnerved by how far away my goals seem and how much more there is to learn.
I know I shouldn’t, though, as the I have been on with Luna has taught me so much and I wouldn’t change a thing. It has taught me that every session counts
Working as a full-time nurse and scheduling in lunch time training sessions was, at the best of times, hasty - but they still counted
Everyone has to start somewhere and the experiences I’ve had are more valuable than any training certificate that always ends up hiding in the attic anyway
All I have to do is look at my dog.
Dogs don’t lie.
THAT’S the beauty of dog training 🖤

Wearing a collar/leash isn’t natural for a puppy, so like most things, must be taught by the owner.
First we teach the concept of leash pressure and then progress to training heel position.
Using a mixture of two quadrants ...
1: Positive Reinforcement ➪ food reward 2: Negative Reinforcement ➪ leash pressure .. Your dog will learn much quicker than with positive reinforcement only
🖤 Sessions should be short and lots of fun
🖤 Your dog must already know it’s marker words (‘yes’/‘okay’/‘free’)
🖤 Your dog must understand ‘luring’
If you have a puppy that pulls and you are worried about training leash pressure because they might hurt themselves in the process - you can use the harness and collar together to teach the concept of leash pressure - gradually weaning off to the use of the collar only.

This little action man is learning quickly with the effort his owners are putting in - giving him a great start..... it really is a dog’s life 🐶 🤎

Dᴏɢ ᴛʀᴀɪɴɪɴɢ ɪɴ sᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ ʙʏ ᴏɴᴇ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ɢʀᴇᴀᴛs

1) Identify and eliminate the bad habits inside the home that most likely created the behavioral issues.

2) Replace the bad habits with good habits.

3) Structure, rules, and boundaries followed consistently.

4) Positive interaction with you through play and formal obedience.

The first 3 take no time out of your day to implement. You are doing something any way, just do the right things now. You’re always training whether you know it or not. The dog knows it.

Number 4 takes very little time. Couple of minutes a couple of times a day goes a long way.

There must be consequences for doing right and there must be consequences for doing wrong.

Reward good behavior whether you ask for it or not.

Correct unwanted behavior quickly. If you do not correct unwanted behavior you are rewarding it.

𝙾𝚋𝚎𝚍𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎
Continue to master and work on the basics.
Come, sit, down, place, out and leave it.
Practice on leash, off leash, with food, without food, with toys, without
Toys, with rewards, without rewards, with tools, without tools
Practice in the Intermittent phase as long as needed when using tools
Continue to work on adding duration of commands, continue to work on adding distance to commands, continue on adding distractions to training
Practice everywhere, strive to achieve advanced obedience which is simply mastery of the basics under all conditions

𝚂𝚝𝚛𝚞𝚌𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎𝚍 𝚆𝚊𝚕𝚔
Strive for daily structured walks
No smelling, peeing or pooping unless given release command, dog must be at your side or slightly behind, change speeds, normal speed, fast pace, very slow, at least until walk is mastered

𝙵𝚛𝚎𝚎 𝚠𝚊𝚕𝚔
Long line & dog can move about freely, practice recall and all other basic commands on the free walk, implement play on the free walk, mix it up

𝚁𝚎𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚖𝚊𝚗𝚍
If the dog does not know it’s release command it’s that much harder for the dog to know how to remain in command

𝙽𝚎𝚠 𝙱𝚎𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚒𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚜
Teach your dog something new, even if you think it’s useless. Utilize food luring and marking to do so. Take your time and you’ll see you both grow as a team

First dates with these two beautiful beasts went very well. 🦍🐊

🧡 They’re a good match in body weight and play. They’ve met before and we had a structured walk on the way to the beach. By not letting them both immediately run free on arrival, it allowed them time to process the environment and to each other. When they were in a calm state of mind (observed by their body language) they completed obedience commands and were then rewarded with release to play. This led to a better recall throughout. Play was initiated by both, rather than one bouncing and dominating the other.
Reasons I had to go in...(pick any 2 😜)
A) I couldn’t face losing ANOTHER ball to the sea
😎 I am one with the ocean
C) Luna made me do it
D) Zeus placed a bet that I wouldn’t
E) I was feeling the heat and wearing black
👕 I couldn’t be happier with the standard of embroidery and service with Martin at MSL Designs Group Ltd in Poole! 🪡

SOLID. SECURE. SAFE.
Cages are finally here after some brilliant service from - would highly recommend using their company if you need!
Now just to complete the cages with some comfortable bedding - then of course some work getting the dogs used to the new travel space 🖤

I enjoy teaching these ‘tricks’ as I find they mentally stimulate Luna (and me 🤪) - and we get to figure it all out from scratch by making mistakes and building on our relationship each time👣🐾 - so no - they’re not just another party piece 🎩 and there’s a lot more work put in than meets the eye.

I’ve been using dried sprats and trout, their stench seems to out do any other smells in the kitchen 😆🐟
Now that I am focusing more on her heel work, I’ve noticed how poorly engaged the back legs are compared to the front. Those two back legs are like a broken rudder and can end up any shape 🥾👠
Luna gets a lot of exercise including swimming in the sea each day. The issue isn’t strength alone, but coordination, too. So - we have worked on a few things...

🖤 confining her working area into narrower spaces
🧡 placing items by her back legs and acknowledging when she steps on these
🖤building on this with the methodology of ‘free shaping’
🧡short, sharp sessions to keep focused
🖤guidance with body pressure
🧡clear commands / I mainly used the clicker as I wasn’t consistent with my marking. I was too busy concentrating on where my body was 😆
🖤balance pad work to improve core
🧡being imaginative - that takes time in itself. I do watch a lot of YouTube, but I find not all methods apply to individual dogs (or owners)
🖤recording each video to observe, critique and retry
🤎ending on a positive and rewarding each effort big or small
⚡️How is your dogs spatial awareness, back leg and core strength?
⚡️Are they a bit clumsy when they chase toys/other dogs?
⚡️Have they tried jumping up into the car/car boot/the front seat of a van and you’ve had to help them?
⚡️Are they floppy when they run and tend to misjudge distance?
⚡️Does your dog stand solid if you want to turn direction and need a bit of a nudge?
Despite being highly agile, Luna ticked a few of those boxes 🥴
🔥Work on their core, coordination and back leg strength

I’ve been hand-feeding Luna’s raw diet to motivate her in short training sessions.
(Don’t worry father, I wash my hands straight after each session 😆 🧼 ⚠️)
have such a good selection. Everything’s individually packaged - making them easy to store and serve 🥩
Once defrosted, I cut them up and then we start the training session. The sessions are not long - about 15 minutes each night 🍖
Tried to take a candid photo, but Luna couldn’t resist 🤭

My mistakes, her interpretations, corrections, distractions, different tones of voice, new positions, other dogs, people, birds, open spaces, smells, toys, the camera, wind, rain, thirst, new collar...
It’s all so much for a dog to process
When you consider all these factors, and how overwhelming they can be, you can appreciate how intelligent these dogs are and understand what it takes for them to focus on you.
We started this training with food rewards and progressed to the toy. I’ll stick with food for now as the head position maintains better with it. Once that is mastered, I’ll move on to the toy as the reward.
I know the video is long, but I use this to critique the sessions about what I NEED to change in how I COMMUNICATE with Luna.

It’s certainly not perfect, but I’m proud of her so far 🔥
Ps: Do you like the Irish bandana🧤
I hope you enjoy my awkward meeting with the nice lady and tangling myself in the lead.. only if you have been bothered to watch a 1 hour insta video 🤪
