Salbutamol is a common medicine for asthma and inhalers may be readily accessible to pets in the home.
We have recently seen an increase in dogs chewing and piercing these inhalers and this can cause adverse effects in pets with increased heart rate, panting and distress. There is also a risk of injury to the mouth and heart.
If your pet has chewed a salbutamol inhaler we advise taking your pet to your vet immediately.
Owners can call our Animal PoisonLine on 01202509000

This is an engorged female tick, named Ixodes ricinus.
Doesn' t she look like a ricinus seed/ bean?

It used to be very unusual to see ticks in the middle of winter, let alone a fully engorged female! Climate change effects of this mild winter!

The owner brought their dog to remove the tick but on arrival she had already fallen off.
Because that is what female ticks do: They fill up with blood, then fall off by themselves and find a place to lay her eggs. She then dies, having completed her task in life.
Male ticks never swell up. They stay on their host for a long time only taking small blood meals to survive. They wait for a female tick to arrive, then mate with her, on the host ( your dog or cat).

This tick was found in the owner' s car, and just as well, because if she had stayed there she would have laid her eggs in the car, and in due course, sometime in spring, 20 000 little ticks ( called larvae) would have crawled all over the car and probably caused very itchy bites on the owners!

Raw feeding.

I know it is a massive fashion and many people think it is wonderful
As a vet I always make people aware of the risks mainly for themselves and their family and friends, as time and again veterinary journals publish data about the high percentage of raw food samples carrying nasties like Salmonelle, Campylobacter, Listeria, tuberculosis, Brucella canis, and toxoplasma. Raw fed dogs spread this over their fur with their saliva and become a risk for the very old, the very young, the vulnerable and people on chemotherapy.

But over Christmas we had a puppy in, 9 weeks old, raw fed, the best quality they could get for her, and ill with a number of unusual symptoms not responding to treatment. Her digestive tract did not work properly, making her constantly constipated, she contracted aspiration pneumonia after vomiting, and then became paralysed, but only her legs. She stayed bright and interested in her surroundings following us around oy with her eyes.
Finally after a week and lots of discussions about " how long to go on, how far to go" one of the vets thought of toxoplasma or neospora, especially the last one which is common in cows. She was put on clindamycin, the treatment for both toxoplasma and neospora and improved overnight, able to sit up and after another day stand again.
She went home two days later!

Just as a warning how risky feeding raw can be!

I respect everybody wanting to do the best for their pets, but please respect us when we share our knowledge and experience of the risks.

We have had clients who found it difficult to understand why we would still not let them into the practice ( except for sad occasions like euthanasia), and why we still asked them to wear a face covering, when " nobody else was doing that anymore and it was not a legal requirement".

We still work with Covid risk prevention. We ourselves work 13 hour shifts with facecovering, to protect our team, of whom some are vulnerable, and to protect our clients whose vulnerability we cannot know.

If one of us becomes infected, the practice will need to close and we cannot help you in emergencies until we are all negative again.

Please understand this policy and wear your facecovering for the limited time we are in direct contact with you.

Remember, for us it is 13 hour shifts masked, and has been so for over 20 months now. We have been there for you every night, weekend and Bank Holiday during all this difficult time.
Please wear your facecovering when asked to do so.

Sadly Poole police brought us a dog who had died in a traffic accident. He is microchipped but we cannot find the owner' s details. He is a castrated male large Jack Russel type, mostly white.
We got in touch with the breeder but she has not been able to trace the owner.
If anybody can help, please?

Please everybody with rabbits
Be very aware of the risk of flystrike ( maggots)
Flies are attracted by the smell of urine and faeces, and in humid warm conditions their eggs hatch into maggots very quickly!
The maggots feed first on some skin excretions and dirt, then eat their way through the skin causing awful wounds.

Keep your rabbits dry and clean
Check them twice daily
Apply pipettes of protecting products.
Ask your vet for advise.

It is heartbreaking to get them in as emergencies and sometimes there is no chance of survival.

Today we saw a dog who swallowed a mask on the beach!
Luckily the owner saw it happen.. As the mask contains a wire it was a risk to see if it would pass the natural way. On the x ray the wire is visible in the stomach.
We gave the dog a nice filling meal, then made him sick and the mask came out nicely protected in the food.
Please please be careful where you leave your used masks!!!!

MICROCHIPPING

Please get your outdoor cat microchipped.
It is not expensive, especially when done together with another procedure.

It is so sad when a stray cat is brought in and we cannot find or contact the owner.

And when your pet is microchipped then please take care that the database know when you move house or change phone.

We often have dogs brought in who have a microchip but the phone or address no longer works!

We have recently had a few cases involving Oak processionary moth (OPM) caterpillars.
OPM caterpillars have hairs containing toxic compounds that irritate the eyes and mouth. Inquisitive pets that come into contact with them may show symptoms such as excessive drooling, swollen tongue, conjunctivitis, gagging, vomiting, difficulty breathing or an inflamed or swollen mouth. The hairs can also come off their bodies and are blown about by the wind, potentially making nearby pets and people itchy. Generally symptoms are no more serious than irritating but very occasionally more severe allergic reactions can occur.

They are most commonly found in the south east of England in the UK, and the main risk period is from April to July. They crawl around in processionary lines, nose-to-tail, which can make them intriguing to pets.

OPM caterpillars are found almost exclusively in oak trees and you can usually see them crawling around the branches or trunk in lines. They often cluster together and build white, silk-type nests in the branches or trunks (not in the leaves) of trees.
